I love the Heart Like A Wheel album & is still one I love to pull out those songs and sing to. Country feels good physically and emotionally- for an alto. For someone who doesn’t sing rock this was a good intro & lesson into how to get closer to that sound if you aren’t comfort with it. It was her work with Nelson Riddle that really confirmed my love of jazz- I have her to thank for that. That live performance is much better than what comes across on most of those albums (there were 3 and they were the last he made before he died). In my 20s & 30s I wasn’t overly thrilled with her standards thinking , they’re nice but just kind of “there.” However the clip you showed of Skylark is more impressive. After her cover of I Knew You When - she did opera. All I can say his - holy 💩! Amazing and a bit unfair 😅. She’s certainly got an insane range. Can’t think of many opera singers who can sing rock. I doubt she’s been recognized enough for all that talent.

She’s a very well trained singer. As a kid- learning from singing with records - I was not at all a rock singer but using her songs as guides to go into high notes was a goal as I was solidly an alto. I still love to do some Pat Benatar karaoke when no one’s home. There’s a LOT more growl in her voice here than on her records - but it’s all good technique because she can pull right out of that and sing clear and clean. Listen to her cover of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights on the Crimes of Passion album which really shows her versatility. Without great training (in Opera!) no way would she be singing so well at 70. Love her so so much! ❤️‍🔥

I had been singing at about 4 yrs old. As soon as I could get a record on a turntable and flip the switch myself. These were the records my mom had, so she was my first musical influence & singing teacher. I’m an alto. None of those notes were tough for me - but into my late forties (and a 10 yr period or more of no longer singing ) I seem to have a tougher time now - perhaps this is another slight voice change. What Carpenter does looks deceptively simple, which is why she’d have been a harder sell in the 80s & 90s when everything was about power and acrobatics. This song is tough because it requires a LOT of breath control. She knows the value of that incredible natural beauty of her voice and uses it instinctively. She’s also completely emotionally naked when she sings. You can’t teach this - it’s a tough thing to even pin down. Every note, every phrase, is honest. She’s not doing acrobatics to impress- she’s displaying something deep within - through that gorgeous tone. It’s the honesty that’s captivating. When she sings she’s baring her soul and possibly looking into yours. You can’t look away from that - it holds the listener right there. It’s intimate & more powerful than all the bs acrobatics in the world. I’d rather hear Carpenter than Mariah Carey, but there are a lot of people who believe a great singer should do the gymnastics. Gymnastics should ONLY happen if it comes about naturally and spontaneously - good examples would be Freddie Mercury, Annie Lennox, Steve Perry. Billie Holiday sang about 5 notes- but she sang them better than almost anyone.

Lol, as a Mexican American in my early 30s… this is not only an absolute classic but also a guaranteed tear-jerker. Juan Gabriel is an eternal icon, a legend, a warm and caring heart that carries the weight and soulful emotion his voice. The despair, the anguish … his voice… it is impossible not to break down. I grew up listening to these songs as an adolescent, and it is hard for me to listen to considering my strained relationship with my own mom. I felt like a burden and inconvenience my entire childhood with her and yet I feel his pain, I almost long for his sorrow in knowing what a beautiful connection he had with his own Mom. I wish I had that. This song shows me a glimpse of what that would be like.

The next video you should do "Gethsemane" from "Jesus Christ Superstar" sung by Ian Gillan. BTW: I am sitting before the screen and yelling at her: Wait for it! Wait for it! It will get even better! :-))) For the counting of solo improvisations: e.g. the guitar solo is playing along and along and then comes the arpeggiated Aminor chord. That is a signal for the rest of band. It is played 8 times, after that is the break. That kind of "play a solo and end with the signal lick" was done by all bands in the 70s that were anywhere close to psychedelic music. Was also done and is done in jazz bands. (Someone I just asked told me ...)

The thing that blows my mind is it seems that a lot of vocal coaches and musical theatre people don't realize that Ian Gillan IS the original lead for Jesus Chris Superstar. All that gorgeous phrasing, crazy jumps, and emotional wailing was Ian in the studio presented a vocal score with "ad lib" written all over the place. Murray Head sang Judas. So good

This is a living legend. A band which started 50+ years ago and they are still rocking in their 70s, dropping a new album this year Particularly 3 of these guys, vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover still in the band, whereas guitarist Ritchie Blackmore has left the band in the 90s and keyboardist Jon Lord sadly passed away in 2012 Notably Blackmore formed another legendary band Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio who I believe you already reacted to
