The animation is based on a Swedish series called Robin. English-dubbed versions were showing on Channel 4, and Radiohead were a big fan of it, so they commissioned its creator to create the music video around the adventures of his characters. They gave him an instrumental-only version of the song and wouldn't let him hear or read the lyrics, as they wanted him to create something that fit the mood without being a literal retelling of the song.

It was a thing in the 90s that music video directors would add some motif to match the lyrics, and it would come across as cheesy. One funny story I like is the video for the song Headhunter by Front 242 is packed with Egg imagery because the director misheard the song title as "Egg Hunter".

If I had to put it into words what I like most about Radiohead, it's that their style is always evolving, always diverting expectations. If you've listened to one Radiohead song, you're far from understanding their style. That said, it's always interesting and always worth a listen.

You can't imagine what it feels like to sing at a concert with all the people and Thom the "rain down" part. One of the best musical experiences of my life.

I think that they said that they took Karma police from there as well (maybe I am wrong on that one) maybe that was a phrase that they were just carrying around in the tourbus at the time.

The very subtle vibrato during the sustained vocals is exquisite. Something you will grow to appreciate on repeat hearings...OK computer.

Radiohead is a self-contained genre. Also, you need to listen to the whole album start to finish, it's an experience.

One of my favourite radiohead vocals is, for my fellow oldies, from a show called MTVs most wanted and they covered 'Nobody does it better' by Carly Simon. It's ludicrous how much power and spite he puts in and totally changes the meaning of the song.

I absolutely love Thom Yorke's voice. If you haven't heard "The Mess We're In" - his duo with PJ Harvey on the album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea - it is INCREDIBLE.

I would suggest reacting to the entire OK Computer album as a whole rather than a few songs.

i would agree with you. But watch Buckley perform on one of these festival from the 90's (don't remember which one) Where he is performing Eternal Life. That guy was really on a another level. Not just vocal ability. An amazing artist with his voice and songwriting. . But yes Thom is an amazing songwriter and as well as, a vocalist. You could already hear that on Pablo Honey on either "You" or "Anyone play guitar" or the obvious. In the middle part on "Creep".

@@jcora444 I'm pretty sure that the story was was actually about Fake Plastic Trees. They say after seeing Buckley live they came back into the studio, Thom sang Fake Plastic Trees and after finishing the recording he broke down and cried. Although I find it kind of strange. That they said that Thom was inspired to use his falsetto after seeing Buckley on this gig. While he was already using his signature falsetto sound on Creep. Which I think that he was originally inspired to copying some what of Bono's style. Since Bono used it as well before Thom, and Thom used it in the same manner. As you can hear if you listen closely that most of Thom's vocal style is take from Bono's vocal style. Especially in the early days. With a tint of Johnny Rotten from Sex pistols. He quite often, even to this day, channels Johnny Rotten into his vocal style, even to this day.

9:45 when he sings 'This' I am hearing him sing it level for two beats, vibrato on the third beat, the vibrato becoming level on the fourth beat, then doing all those steps again over beats 5,6,7,8 then opening into a wider slow vibrato to finish the word , Thats a lot of work for one sylable

Apparently he said seeing Jeff Buckley live gave him the confidence to sing falsetto. He came back to the studio after seeing him play live one night and recorded Fake Plastic Trees in one take.

Hearing Thom live is like seeing a picture of a sunset as opposed to seeing a sunset in person. His voice sounds better live.

'cool animation' haha this is one of the wildest music videos, and was of course super controversial at the time. I would definitely suggest listening to OK Computer in one sitting, as it is conceptual and the songs all flow together to an extent. Not that you have to do an album reaction, as that'd be difficult, but I do think this is one of the best albums of all time. Thom has a very unique timbre and style, so I would really love to see more Radiohead reactions! You could of course also do No Surprises, Karma Police, Pyramid Song, Knives Out, Daydreaming, Fake Plastic Trees, Just, etc. I've been lucky enough to see Radiohead live twice, once for 'In Rainbows' (Vancouver) and once for 'A Moon Shaped Pool' (Berkeley), and I dare say they were spiritual experiences lol

Love this reaction!! For vocals…there are soooo many amazing Radiohead songs out there. For live vocals, some of the best recordings are Live From The Basement. Their In Rainbows Album. Also, there is a 95 or 97 Tv Live recording of him singing their song “Street Spirit” where they perform a more acoustic version. This REALLY shows his lovely vocals as well. ❤❤

Radiohead are a band that has something for everybody and a ton of VERY passionate fans, as I'm sure you could tell, which means that any time a channel like this one starts getting into them they are going to be absolutely *buried* with recommendations for what to listen and react to next, because each person has a different favorite song or specific performance. That said, I will toss another vote for the From the Basement version of Nude (I believe I even made a recommendation for it once on a different video a while back). I don't think there's any performance where he showcases his range and technical ability better, I can't think of a better song of theirs to suit this channel's focus. If you want to do any more Radiohead, you can't go wrong with that one. Separate from this channel's main thrust, just from a pure musical enjoyment standpoint, I do just recommend listening to the entire In Rainbows From The Basement performance, even just on your own time (this goes for everybody). What a treat of a performance.

I think you would find their song The Tourist interesting vocally. It almost has a droning melody, but the harmonies and the belting in the chorus are so dynamic.

Paranoid android it's an outstanding musical composition, but if you want to hear the insane range of Thom Yorke vocals you should listen to the "From the Basment - In Rainbows" version of "Nude". It's a live preformance in a studio environment. The hole performance it's an amazing oportunity to appreciate the insane potential of every member of Radiohead live, but in this particular piece: "Nude", the vocals are like coming from a intermittent celestial/obscure, hipnotic looking instrument XD, his movements, the progressions, the choices, the timing, the subtlety/finesse, the power, plus the power of the choices, it's like it's telling a story with his voice beside the words, being the main instrument of the piece (for me): his voice. Love to see you react to that song!

Interesting note about learning the placement of the notes - when I'm rehearsing for a stageplay I slowly pronounce every word but exaggerating the consonants because that's where we tend to be lax in our tongue placement and skim over certain sounds like 'k' and 't' so by the time I've done it a few times painfully slowly inunciating the first and last consonant of each word, by the time I do it at normal speed it's effortless.

I was lucky to see them on the OK Computer tour in Blackpool, England in the late nineties. He’s even better live. One song to maybe listen to is How To Disappear on the KID A album. Superb vocals. And thanks for what you do too 👍😄

Thom has complete and utter control of his voice, he is magnificent in his craft

I've listened to the whole album hundreds of time over the years, my favourite vocals are in 'Exit Music' and 'The Tourist'. In Exit Music, you can even hear his lips make contact in the early stage.

Lots of great Thom vocal performances. Some of mentioned “Nude.” Absolutely. I would also look at various live versions of “Idoteque,” and then also “Myxomatosis” which is entirely in his low-register, but in one of the hardest rocking tracks Radiohead has done.

This song was released in 1997. There wouldn't have been any pitch correction. I don't think they ever used it later either.

Great analysis. Thom Yorke performed Ingenue live on Jonathan Ross. It's not powerful but fully displays how much control he has.

Ok Computer is my pick for best 90's album as well as one of the greatest concept albums ever made. The Bends is a great album as well.

That part when you said that it doesn't really sound like he is singing. That is where Thom is doing his Johnny Rotten (from Sex Pistols) or channeling Johnny Rotten if you will. He does it alot now and then. You can really hear it in Bodysnatcher on In Rainbows.

Your first experience should have definitely been live... Check out the jools Holland show this track live it's a masterclass in live performance ! It blew me away.

Not related to this video but I have been enjoying your videos very much. I was wondering (could not find them) if you have ever done a video for the band Deftones? Just a little background from what I know.....I see you have reviewed a few of the bands from the later 90s like Likin Park and Korn, which are fine. Deftones were kinds before them, they were around much longer. Their use of rap/hip is more subtle but they kinda had scratching turntables and all that way back in the early 90s. They never got (I think by choice) as big as those other bands but are just incredible. I think you would really like the emotion in the singers voice. As a bonus, they have songs that were produced by the singer of Tool. They have an amazing song called Passenger that features him singing (I know you like him). Their album White Pony is often considered their best.

I’d love to see an analysis of “Nude” or my low key favorite from OK Computer “Let Down”.

Thom Yorke - Bloom (Live from Electric Lady Studios) is well worth a listen. In Rainbows From the Basement is a great showcase of the whole band.

Radiohead is huge rabbit hole. A few songs with great vocals: Nude, How To Disappear Completely, Pyramid Song, Sail To The Moon and Present Tense.

Believe me, seeing this live was life changing! Creep is lovely, I still love it, bit understand their unwillingness to, oh shit, I have had a skull fra 23:20 bit wrong. Any way, Nick Cave. Take it where you want!

I can only recommend more Radiohead. They are a band that very much morphed their music through time, yet always managed to retain their own sound. And Thom Yorke is an amazing singer. There's some beautiful less chaotic songs like 'No Suprises' from OK Computer. Later albums become more a mix of electronic gadgets mixed with Prog Rock. Radiohead to me always coneys a sense of alienation and melancholy with the world which I personally I can very much relate too. Thom's Solo projects are also very much worth listening to. I pretty much like everything Radiohead, but personal Favourite songs are "How to Dissapear completely" "The Pyramid Song" "Hail to the Thief" and "Moonshaped Pool". though my favourite songs tend to change. I highly recommend diving into their discography even in your own time, cause there are so many gems of songs in there.

I want to suggest for you to watch Thom Yorke's solo, piano rendition of a Radiohead song called, "Bloom," recorded at Electric Lady studios. Or/also, his solo song "Suspirium" from the same session at Electric Lady. In both you can better hear the magic of his voice without the (important, wonderful, inspiring but somewhat distracting when doing a vocal analysis) overlay of guitars, drums, and such. Lastly, try the live version (from the Johnathan Ross show) of "Ingenue" where again it is just Thom and a piano. But truly, any of the suggestions made in the comments are bound to be bangers. I've been a fan of Radiohead since the first time I heard a couple of their demo songs on a college rock station played by an exchange student via England, around 1990. That's nearly 35 years ago!
