My favorite Styx song. My favorite part is the opening line "I'm sailing away". I love the way he sings it. It's a powerful and beautiful rock song; definitely one of the greatest. I love watching your analyses. You mentioned that Dennis emphasizes his diphthongs. I looked up the definition and it's true. I never was aware of this until now; I hear the song in a whole new way now.

Great reaction, great song, great memories. Styx was blessed with two amazing singers, DeYoung and Tommy Shaw. Watch Shaw play and sing with the Youth Orchestra, amazing. I always pick up on the way he says 'gold' near 8:03. It seems he adds something to just the 'L' sound. I get the impression singers today don't go though nearly the training they did back then. They just show up and let the computer fix it. Back then it seemed they trained and trained, practiced and practiced until it was perfect, even a cappella.

Everything you said is true… BUT, having been in a bunch of bands and dealt with lots of personalities, etc…I do get the impression that Dennis is probably incredibly hard to work with. “My way or the highway” and “diva” are phrases that come to my mind. Don’t get me wrong, he’s incredible and I love his music and his voice. But I could easily see a band saying, “yeah, we’ve had enough”

  • @SueKay-rq1lr

@@mikeb4595Dennis appeared to be a perfectionist like Steve Perry. I really think that trait could be spread around today. People are lazy, and have no respect for others. AI has destroyed Styx, and many other bands that I once liked in my younger days. Jealousy can be a dangerous thing, too. Dennis continues to have a great marriage, and no drug or alcohol addictions. Tommy had or still may have alcohol and drug addictions. Dennis helped him financially in those areas. I just wish Tommy and JY would have been honest in interviews about what happened. The Dan Rather interview was baffling. 😮 I’m a Dennis fan, and always will be. Sure the past is the past, however, forgetting is the issue. This happened to Foreigner, and Journey. I don’t listen to any of these bands due to egotistical asses. I listen to my vinyls from the good old days. 👍

What’s crazy is, the Guitarist Tommy Shaw also has an incredible voice and sang lead on several of their hits as well. Please check out “Renegade”, “Too Much Time on My Hands”, & Blue Collar Man” to hear some of Tommy’s lead vocals. The other guitarist James Young also sang a lot of lead vocals, especially early on and has a good “Rock Voice” This also allowed them to do some incredible three part Harmonies. Tommy Shaw even stated that he got the gig as the 2nd guitarist in Styx because he could hit the high harmony part on a song they had called “Lady”.

Since you said you have heard this song before I'm surprised you didn't notice that keyboard solo in the middle was missing. Should've done a live version, but that's ok. Still love you break down the vocals. You're a beautiful young woman and a natural in front of the camera. A joy to watch.

Seen your reaction to Triumph a couple of times. One of the best Canadian bands for sure...One of the oter best Canadian Bands for sure is April wine. Start with Roller or Sign of the Gypsy Queen, but there are so many more.

Ahhhh... Styx. More please! Thank you SO much. I love your channel. Not only was Styx my "favorite band" in Junior High School, but my band "covered" the chorus of this song on tour. It was so fun. Please do more Styx and get into the THREE lead vocalists (individually) and their harmonies (as a group). I highly suggest the "Styx: Caught in the Act Live" concert video and the "Kilroy Was Here" film/performance (Mr. Roboto). Such great songs from my "childhood memories and the dreams I had..." I suggest Tommy Shaw singing lead on "Renegade", James Young singing lead on "Snowblind," and Dennis DeYoung singing lead on... well... anything (Babe?)

There are only a handful of reactors, even the "vocal coach" ones, who really nerd out about song vocals. I am more of an instrumentalist in my upbringing. Not so much a vocalist. So getting some tips and observations actually helps me in the limited singing I do today. I love that you really deep-dive when you are engrossed in a particular vocal performance.

Now that you've heard Dennis DeYoung, you should listen to Tommy Shaw, the guy who was singing backup vocals in this song. I would recommend Crystal Ball. As a guitarist, I love his 12 string work on that song, but his vocals are awesome as well!

I think you would enjoy Tommy Johansson, lead guitarist in Sabaton until now and with his own band Majestica where he also is the lead singer. The interesting thing is that he also makes covers of well known music. He is doing all the arrangements and vocals (mostly) and plays many of the instruments. He is a true talent with an amazing range and voice. His humour adds to the mix. The last cover with "Paid my dues" (Anastacia) is quite a good example to start with.

Hi Bethany I watch most of your Videos for the joy you bring to me. I am 65 years old. I so wish you'd play The music called the Philly Sound. Groups such as the O' Jays, Any song produced by the great Gamble and Huff producers. Can you please at least listen to what I consider the best music made. I'd love if you could do a video of a group from back in the Early 70s. You are so amazing at this. Thank You.

So happy to hear you talk about his diction. You can understand every word Dennis sings, unlike the pop singers today who you can’t understand the majority of their vocals. I have been singing for over 50 years in local bands and, even if I am not great, I’m proud that people have told me it’s nice to be able to understand what I’m singing.
