@rickdaniels1789 agreed. Triumph is not underrated at all. Anyone who hears them rates them as skilled. What they, are is not known as much as Rush or the US bands of the time. And that's OK. They were huge in Canada. For whatever reason some of our most talented bands to get big down south. And then on the other hand some of our least talented do.

Rik was my music business and songwriting teacher in college just over a decade ago. Let alone his performance and compositional chops: he was one of the most invested and passionate teachers I’ve come across. Positive, knowledgeable and demanding yet fair - we’d often get emails late at night following up on questions we’d asked in class. I remember those classes very fondly.

Yeah I think I saw an interview with Rik a while back and he said back then he realized he had a gift he was given to make music and he loved making music and he didn't want to really waste what he was given, so he never really got into all that excess other bands were getting into. He took care of himself and it showed as he got older. So I think a lot of their music and lyrics echoed the band's outlook on that.

These are fun reactions to watch. The good news is, Triumph has more songs. At the risk of piling too much praise on Rik, but he also plays great jazz guitar and classical guitar. He would often have a guitar etude as one of the songs on their albums. But like you said, I've never heard any guy actually have some rasp in their voice at the pitches he's hitting. It's crazy.

Back in the days of long hair and freedom. We did not know how good we had it! I once heard a comedian say "Youth is wasted on the young." That's a little mean, but it has some truth mixed in there. I was never a huge Triumph fan. I know their work. There were so many good bands back then. I saw several great ones!!!! Born at the right time!!!! This was back before the Internet so groups had to get out on the road to get their work out to the masses. Some of these concerts were much more fun than listening to an album. The vocalist is playing a 12 string. COOL....... Thank you Bethany for sharing your knowledge with us mere mortals. I love seeing the elation in your expression, and your obvious enjoyment of the music, as well as the vocals! FYI, there is a video on you tube of Rik Emmett performing "Magic Power" solo more recently, where he starts off the song, then makes the point that he wrote the song in one key, but now he's forced to sing it in another key - about a fifth lower. Still a great performer, but 40 years will have that effect on one's vocal range, I guess.

I was a teenage girl in the 80’s who listened to pop music…. most of the time. I found Triumph thanks to MTV. Their videos were not played nearly as often as the more prominent groups, so I would tune in at the top and middle of the hour to hear the “upcoming videos” list. Bought Allied Forces, the current album at the time. My local station wasn’t playing their songs except for Lay it on the Line. So I went down to my local record store and ordered the album “Just a Game” because they didn’t have that one in stock. I loved triumph, and I kept trying to get my friends to listen to them and they wouldn’t but I had the exact same reaction you did listening to this man’s voice. He just mesmerized me.

I remember telling anyone I knew after seeing them live so many times I would tell anyone I could tell how Great these Guys were. I have gotten to meet them over the years and the Nicest Guys Rik is just so down to earth and funny He was a Super Star The Drummer is also a Singer on many songs when the 2 sing together there is a particular song you should listen to off The Album “Thunder Seven” the song “Killing Time” Great example not a live video I can find. There is a concert video 1987 which was the last tour unfortunately with Rik “Live in Halifax” You have to to watch”Lay it on The Line” changes that up some funny thing when they first got together and first recorded the album cover had made mistake and changed spelling of Rick’s name to Rik to much trouble changing back I know You will like even more of these songs. I sound like a Promoter first time I heard them I couldn’t change tapes kept listening on the way to a Music Festival and I was just 16 years old and as soon as I got home I called our local Rock station and DJ had not heard I went out bought 2 copies of their album Just A Game and gave one to DJ at radio station that station still plays a song from that album.
