    This of course was the original version of this duet. It was featured on Garland’s tv show in 1963. Judy was a huge champion of Barbra and in turn, Barbra to this day cites her gratitude to Judy for the opportunity that it gave her. The idea was Judy’s. She suggested the duet to her musical arranger on the show. She put on Barbra’s record of Happy Days and sang Get Happy in counterpoint. The rest is history. The duet is much imitated but never matched. Two true legends. Thanks for uploading and for you enthusiasm in this iconic moment😊

    Putting aside (if in fact you can) the fact that these two are each such incredible artists in their own rights. What impresses me most about this particular duet is that the are both clearly and deliberately leaning into each other’s strengths. Judi is doing her utmost to allow Barbra’s voice to steal the show, and Barbra is passing that right back to Judi. There’s no egos fighting here. Each could be trying to outshine the other, and let’s face it, they could easily be trying to outperform each other, but they aren’t. Both are so restrained right up to the post where they start belting it out. It’s as though each want to perform in a way that pushes the other to perfection, and in doing so, they both win, and so did the audience in 1963, as are we some 60 years later. This performance never fails to put a smile on my face.

    I'm pretty sure there is still enough talent out there. I guess the main difference is, that these days the natural fun and feel for music is overshadowed by the need for "perfection". There are still great singers out there, but as much technical perfection as they have, I often feel the lack "heart and soul" in it. It's more about simulation feeling perfectly with technique, than actually feeling it and "letting it out". I don't know if my point comes through, it hard to describe.

  • @donnamentrasti2695

    @donnamentrasti2695

    @mrtveye6682 Your point comes through perfectly to me. Few singers today know how to sing in the moment. This is one reason Streisand took just one vocal lesson and never went back. She didn't find it natural to have to think about how to form her mouth or control her breath on certain notes. It was more natural for her to just feel the lyric in the moment, which is why she rarely, if ever, sings a song the same way, no matter how many times she may sing it. It's also why so many of the songs she's performed in her movies, like "My Man" and "Evergreen" for example, were done in one take. This is a rarity among today's vocalists. And as Barbra has said herself, "What comes from the heart, goes to the heart." So yes, your point is spot on.

    I have yet to hear a singer as talented as these two. They both were naturally gifted and not trained. Unlike today’s singers who you can’t hear without a microphone up to their mouths, Barbra and Judy were singing with a live orchestra! Not only that, but were without autotune and layering of tracks like they do on all of the vocal competition shows. They were also projecting their beautiful and powerful voices while sitting down which is never done with contemporary singers because it’s too darn difficult!! There is no comparison.

No matter how different the voice of her duet partner, from Andrea Bocelli to Willie Nelson, to Kermit The Frog, Barbra never fails to complement each one, and not overpower as she could easily do with most.

    Being a professional singer and vocal coach, I am always amazed at how naturally great their technique is. Neither one had singing lessons! They both do so many correct things that we singing teachers try and try to get out of our students with often times no success. Look at their tongue positions, especially Barbra's! I call it the three F's... Fat, Flat and Forward. And it's also a little raised; a nice naturally curved upward position that also helps to get it out of the back of the throat, especially for higher notes. Both have nice relaxed jaws. Look at their faces. They never look strained! And their intonation... spot on! This was live singing folks! No editing or auto-tune! You also mentioned what a thrill it is watching and listening to two singers of the same caliber playing and feeding off each other. I'm always blown away with Barbra's performing ability and instinct at such an early age, and with not many years professionally singing before this! She's 21 here (Judy was 20 years old at 41). Barbra started singing in clubs when she was 18 in 1960, and didn't get a record contract until she was 20, in 1962 (a year before this show). It's funny when Judy says she has all Barbra's albums at home, because Barbra only had two studio albums out at that point. Hehe! Although to be fair, Barbra was on two other 1962 show albums as well, "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" and "Pins and Needles." Anyway, it was a pleasure watching and listening to your reactions to this performance. You got another subscriber!

    I love the dynamic use of power and emotion in their voices. I don't hear much of that in pop music these days. Davina Michelle made a cover of P!nk's What about Us? I think you'll enjoy it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmmOrsaHccLdf8Y.html And if you want to see Davina performance the song live: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e3l7yKmpk6W-qMo.html P!nk's reaction to Davina's cover was funny and charming: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6Knp49mace8qZM.html Enjoy.

    I liked watching your reaction to watching them sing. You had a sort of winsome look, like a little kid. Not being a singer I have a question and truly hope you will see this and answer it. I’ve noticed for years that Streisand does this thing with her voice where she will sound like a trumpet for a small portion at the end of a lyric, like the last part of a word. I’d like to know what that is, what it’s called. I’ve never heard anyone do that before. She does it in this duet when she sings “ the skies above”. Perhaps it’s a common thing and I just don’t listen to the right kind of singers or music to hear it. I’m only familiar with Barbra because my mom played her constantly my entire life so I know and love her. Anyway, any info on this would be appreciated. Thank you and am enjoying your videos.

    Hey Bethany, been a bit, hope all is well. :) I don't listen to a lot of Barbra but the first thing I noticed in this clip is how musical her speaking voice is. Do you find this happens naturally through training or do the best ones more often start that way?

    Ooh good question! I'm leaning toward the latter. A person's speaking voice can absolutely be influenced by their training, but I've found the opposite happens more often.

    @@TheVocalyst I agree regarding the sound of Barbra's speaking voice. It is very musical. What's interesting here is she never had any formal singing lessons/training, but attended acting classses as a teen. Perhaps the musicality in the speaking voice of Barbra the singer comes from the training Barbra the actress had (at least in part). 🤔 😉😊
