People s reaction to theMop Tops varies inversely with their prior experiece of popular music ..pop blues rockn roll what have you. If you were aware and e perienced their music was pretty ho hum ..Love me Love me do ? The enormous commercial appeal of the Boys was amongst girls 12 to 17 . Their song writing was pretty sparse especially compared to say Lieber and Stoller . If you look at their output once they stepped away from the Beatles and George Martin it tells the story .

Give over with your half-baked "theories". Brian Epstein wasn't some puppet-master manipulating the masses into some kind of herd-think. He just wasn't - and was probably as surprised by the success of his group as anyone. The Beatles were a genuine phenomenon, initially because of their authenticity and unlearned musicality - no one else sounded or looked or behaved llke them. Epstein actually had very little to do with that. He was just the guy who got them gigs, got them a record contract, got them on the radio and TV, and got their merch sold. Much of their greatest work was created AFTER Epstein died, when they were rudderless in a management sense. He actually made many mistakes and lost them a lot of money because he wasn't such a good businessman and promoter, as you would have known from reading some of the literature, like 'You Never Give Me Your Money' by Peter Doggett. A song like 'Drive My Car' is still very good and original whatever your initial, subjective reaction was. It doesn't suddenly become good because of the halo of hype around The Fabs. This song was from the period when The Beatles were moving from being hit-writers to proper song-writers - that is, writing enduring classics, which they kept doing again and again, getting better all the time (to coin a phrase). This is another feat that most artists are incapable of and is also one of the reasons why they are enduringly great - a reason you didn't list, preferring instead to blather on about your pet conspiracy theory. A lot of acts are hyped, but eventually people see through that and judge the music for what it is. But The Beatles didn't even need any hype, because they became a cultural and musical phenomenon from the moment they first appeared on TV. 'Now and Then', which was released 53 years after they split up, was hyped, in the sense that it was marketed very well. But I think it's a rather slight song and won't be remembered as a classic. We'll see. But apart from releases like 'Now and Then', you don't actually hear much of their music on the radio or telly these days, so younger people who are naturally curious about what they were all about decide to dip into their back catalogue - and then they discover all the amazing songs they released. That's what makes The Beatles so big even today - their ability to create legions of new fans. Not "the hype". Puppet-master theories purporting to explain cultural phenomena are usually lazy and simplistic - and your theory is no exception, especially since all your evidence in favour of it is taken from one source: Epstein's memoir. Any cultural historian worth their salt doesn't take the word of one of the characters at the centre of the events being analysed as infallible. And yet, that's all you are doing.

I do often struggle understanding his lyrics but the line "The questions are the answers you might need" makes a lot of sense to me. The same old answers will not solve your problems. You cannot solve your problems until you come up with brand new questions.

I love how this is considired hard and sophisticated. Key changes can be annoying if you dont knkw how to do them. But this isnt that hard. I love the song though! It sounds amazing, i never really listened to the beatles. Ironic since i only listen to old music. I definagely learned a lot, and thank you!

Great lesson, get a lyricist and you got something here! No offense at the standing sentiment but the Beatles would tells us a quirky little tale or just embrace an entire emotion, “Here comes the sun” comes to mind The catchy melody hook and the quick to memory lyrics are where the magic happened up and above the clever composing nuances you have outlined so well, thanks

Had a showboating guitarist completely take over a band despite the fact that he WASN'T A MEMBER. We had just taken him on for one show since our normal guitarist couldn't be there. He decided that he could both do lead guitar AND vocals Needless to say, he sounded terrible both ways. He couldn't carry a note in a bucket, and completely ruined the show.

Low blow to Ringo in #5. Paul and John specifically sought out Ringo because he was the best drummer in the best band in Liverpool at the time. He's also a perfect drummer, which many flashy drummers are not.

This is why I feel like bands who's members have remained the same since the beginning just get better with time. They learn and grow together and get closer as people and musicians. Between the Buried and Me and Mastodon are just two great examples of that. Their newest stuff is always the best to me (especially BTBAM's Colors II holy cow what a great album). Bringing in new people and cycling out members brings new styles and techniques and talents, and the rest of the band has to adapt to that, inevitably changing their sound, then you get a band like Opeth.

Thank you for mentioning The Seahorses' song - great changes indeed. That said, I find it helpful to distinguish between music in the charts (which in my view nowadays is more than ever about the image of the artist rather than the quality of the song) and other music produced today. I find loads of great writing, interesting changes, lyrics, instrumentations etc. My experience is: one has to search for it. The big labels won't do that work for us.

I’ve thought about making a video like this as I toured the country (Canada) with a dozen piece band and we had all of these people over the years. I played harmonica. I was the most loyal band member, never throwing tantrums and usually just grateful to be on tour…every single band member had quit the band at least once…I got kicked out (with half the band) so they could make more cash. I’m quite glad to be done with it but it was 15 years of tempers, egos, van fights etc. I should say I started the band, but was not the leader. All our problems could have been made better if the two songwriters we had would have been good leaders as that was the role they assumed. We got on the biggest production group in Canada and one of the leaders bailed on a cross country tour the week we were supposed to leave. It was shameful. All a learning experience for sure

Gotta include the people that don’t know how to play their instruments and still choose to jam and waste everyone’s time. Once pulled up to a jam where I was the only one that actually knew how to play. They may not be a load of dickheads but shit man it was a waste of time

Had a guitar player who was an alcoholic. He didn't have a car or a license. I constantly had to cart him atound to practice and gigs while he drank and I always had to be DD. He refused to do anything to try to get his license, and I got tired of never being able to switch DD responsibilities and watching him constantly drink.

The way the media continues to focus on the Beatles and Beach Boys music as if nothing came before, that is was their genius is a bit of of baby boomer-itus I think. The truth is those reporting on the music simply weren't around then so they can't appreciate that a robust foundation of music evolved from swing, jazz, R&B etc like doo wop and 50s pop. Go back and look at the quality of all those songs and the variety of song writers. So what if in the 60s the Beatles were so dominant, did it really make a big difference in the body of music compared to the 50s?

Fascinating to see this explicit and considered development rather than by instinct or ‘feel’ (though of course that contributes). You turned an idea into a full song. My only critique is the guitar is just too hard. A hollow body would have complemented the acoustic much better, the fuzz was just two aggressive, making the sweet declarative lyrics more sinister.
