CHOP SUEY! Decoded: A Crucifixion Conspiracy

American metal band System Of A Down released 'Chop Suey!' in August 2001, and since then many theories have swirled about the song's meaning. Here's what I think the lyrics and the song are actually about.
Many images and videos in my KZread content have been found online without any attribution or credit available. In many cases I have therefore not been able to add a credit in the videos themselves due to lack of information. If your image or video has been used and a credit is required, please email me with your details and evidence of authorship and a credit will be added into the video description.
Many thanks, JH.

Never thought I’d see Britpop fanatic James Hargreaves talk about System of A Down, what a weird world we live in

Fascinating interpretation. Tbh I'd never had the faintest idea what the lyrics meant, but I think you hit the nail on the head. I also really like that you're covering heavier bands. I like Oasis, but I've always liked heavy music too, which I've had to put up with a lot of stick for over the years. I'd love to see more heavy music delved into.

makes sense when a lot of soad songs are about conspiracy theories and questioning the government, which is something i've kinda only just realised. the end of this video where you linked the verse lyrics to the chorus ones blew my mind. you've made me enjoy this song even more

It’s entirely rational not to trust the government when it has become clear if it wasn’t already that they’ve taken money & power from Uber wealthy people and NGOs to throw every one of us under a very big bus. By the way, there is a conspiracy. There’s nothing theoretical about it.

Great to see James diving deep in other genres and directions. Would LOVE to see some Nirvana, Sabbath and Hendrix coverage from James. Or more Punk features. x

S.O.A.D. are another one of my all time favourite bands. Toxicity being my favourite song from them and they are one of the best political bands out there. Was a complete surprise to see a video on a metal band from you. lol

What does that mean, though? "One of the best political bands" because, as a band, they blatantly hold contrary opinions.

They hold up very relevant, powerful messages in a lot of their songs. A band like these guys who experienced what they saw through these political/war/genocide/corruption as well as other things did create a strong discography with impactful meanings, whether people dig that stuff or not.

I just realized i had a mondegreen as i thought the line as a teenager was " Father Tierhands, i commend my spirit" 😅 Also you forgot at the start he says "rolling suicide" on the album version.

James, if you ever fancy a completely difficult task, try to work out what My Bloody Valentine’s “Loveless” means, track by track. Unfortunately there is no official or unquestioned lyric set, anywhere.

Hey I love your vids and how you discuss music. As a person who was once an atheist and is now Christian I was very surprised by your interpretation of this song. As a youngster growing up in the 00s, I always thought it was about a non believer begging to God for answers. But that’s just me. Keep up the good work, but remember God will always look out for you. I use to think it was hogwash but Christianity is good and so our Christians. Not perfect, but good.

Great video, i never would’ve interpreted it this way, but it’s uncanny how well it all links together, I think you’ve cracked it here! I’d love to see some more content around bands outside of the britpop/uk indie sphere in the future🫡

Can you also dissect SOAD'S toxicity because it also has an in dephth type lyrics in them, if you dont mind kindly asking PS: this breakdown also reminded of the matrix relaoded's scene where neo meets the architect.

It's about UK Garage and R&B sensation Craig Davids's failure to break America. He's singing from the perspective of Davids. Summat like that.

PS: Re-Jesus faked his death. I would suggest a very VERY good movie called "The Man From Earth", that you can find here, on KZread. Won't spoil the plot ... but it talks about Jesus at some point and it is mind blowing!

While I do agree it was likely on purpose, I think you're reasoning is faulty. Is it not just as possible that Serj being familiar with the bible, then used the second part purposefully after randomly picking the first part? I know if i picked something randomly from a source I knew, my mind would instantly start thinking of other applicable phrases from the source. Basically, I don't think the second part contradicts, or comfirms, that the first part was strategically chosen.

I have to say this aspect that the story of the crucifixion is symbolic story of the sacred secretion where this crist seed is "born" in the brain and then decends the spine only to be risen again and when that thing reaches the pineal gland that's called crucifixion. The Forbidden fruit is symbolic of wasted sexual energy couse that destroys the crist within. Cross is symbolic of the body. Three days are the time perioid in every month when the crist seed is born. Jesus being perfect is a symbol of that you need to practice meditation and be in Good Vibrations to protect the tree of life that's the nervous system of the body so that the crist oil will rise back up the spine. crucifixion has another meaning that is to multiple thousand fold. Bible talks about things like oil and the lamp. Lamb of god. Oil is the crist oil and lamp is the pineal gland. Light of the world. Check out Kelly-Marie Kerr channel on youtube for really detailed info on this topic. She goes through many stories of the bible how they relate to inner workings of the body and other stuff like Adam and Eve being the Atom and Electron ect. It's very deep
