Cadence Hira

I teach music theory and composition lessons! Email me for more info.

Cool music theory isn’t exclusive to Jacob Collier or jazz standards. Weird chords, funky time signatures, and other advanced harmonic concepts can be found in everything, from video games, to film scores, pop songs etc. I make these vids to talk about these concepts and make them accessible and fun.

The GBA is kind of weak. I assume the game just slightly slower than intended because it just makes the console run slow.

Best explanation of time signatures I've ever seen. Not just because you show examples, but the base explanation you give at the start is also way better then anything I've seen

I genuinely gave up trying 2 get combos in these songs. I didn’t even understand music back then. This is the equivalent of telling me I had 2 keep in beat 2 a Bjork pop song but I had 2 do it 2 her vocals.

I have a few theories on my KK Crusin' whistle is sharp 1. it's to help it stand out against the guitar 2. It's to make it sound more like someone's really whistling/more freeform, even the best musician can't whistle perfectly in tune, and even if KK is a synth, you can use those microtones to mimic the effect

Really great stuff!!! The 29/16 time signature has always felt a bit wrong to me. It's a great approximation, but it always felt like a blanket solution that swept any tempo fuckery under the 3:5-let. The idea of just programming tempo changes every time the heartbeat changes makes far more sense for music that will never have to be played by humans. And for humans, as you said, those complex time signatures definitely capture the "feel" the tracks are going for even if they're not mathematically precise. My uninformed theory is that the ingame audio is slower because the game's audio logic is also checking for other sounds it needs to play? Maybe GBA memory might be an issue too. Some of the calculations it has to do to change BPM may involve floating point or roundoff errors? This all reminds me of the method/effect Ludvig Goransson was going for in Oppenheimer - Can You Hear the Music. There's a video of him breaking it down far better but essentially each rising and falling phrase is played at a new BPM based on mathematical relationships (multiply by 1.5 to make eighth notes sound like triplets with no apparent tempo change, divide by 1.5 to go back, but add 20 BPM so the whole pattern accelerates, repeat) and the orchestra is just absurdly talented at following click tracks and instantly changing tempo.

Spoilers for mother 3: This is actually really cool because the complexity of the tempo shifts is a reflection of the outward disposition of the strong one who has under gone all these horrid modifications but under it all he's just Lucas' brother a human being with a normal heart so it makes sense that the final time signature is just the good ol' 4/4

For me 8/8 absolutely exists, and it's the preferable time signature every time you have 8 eight-notes, but you specifically do not want to feel them as 4+4, rather put emphasis on a grouping like 3+3+2. No nintendo example of the top of my head though.

"The relative familiarity of 'Strong One' and its associated heartbeat is neat because 'Masked Man' takes advantage of that and turns the otherwise familiar tune into a counterintuitive abomination" I love this because in a way, it's very much what the game does with the Masked Man himself. O really like the degree of story, gameplay and music integration they managed this game to have.
