    So, I looked into the いきすぎ (ikisugi) thing out of sheer curiosity... At first I didn't think it was too bad and then I looked in images and found a Japanese meme, watched the video on KZread and now I understand EVERYTHING

  • @kerokeroq

    The meme started when a drafted baseball player actually appeared in a gay video. An impassioned performer in the video shouted "Ikisugi", which spread the line, and one keyboardist called the black adder code the "Ikisugi code", making it popular among Japanese. The name has spread.

    Thank you very much for this interesting and informative video! Please allow me to add two things: 1. I think this chord did first appear in music of late romanticism. With a very short research I could find an example in Scriabines Piano Sonata No. 4, seven bars before the ending of the first movement, induced by a contrary chromatic movement. 2. In terms of jazz theory it seems absolutely adequate to me to interpret the use of this chord in many cases as a SubV. In terms of classical theory I'd sometimes describe it (of course depending on the special context) as the second inversion of a major triad with "dis-altered" fifth - often in the function of a dominant, although without a 7 -, for example in a progression like: c-f-a-c - cb-f-a-c# - bb-f-a-d (the forementioned example from Scriabine is very close to the retrograde version of this progression); so the second chord has the b5 as the base tone and the #5 as the upper tone (a previous commentator wrote something very similar; I beg your pardon for repetition😉). Anyway, your video is very inspiring, thanks again!

    I see the chord on Daddy Daddy Do as just a passing chord, but inverted, like a V7(b13) over its 5th

  • @Michail_Chatziasemidis
    @Michail_Chatziasemidis Жыл бұрын

    You could also interpret it as an augmented chord with a minor 7th in third inversion built on the minor third degree of the scale, i.e. a bIII6#/2, which then resolves to the tonic; in functional harmony, it would be a counter parallel dominant 7th chord, i.e. a dG5#/7. That way, it never lacks a third. When used as a secondary bIII6#/2 → V (or as a (dG5#/7)[D]), it could be named as a "Japanese augmented sixth" chord (or Jp2), bearing resemblance to the usual German, Italian and French chords.

    Am I crazy or does anyone also notice that anime songs tend to go a half step down in their progressions to create tension? (Sorry, I don't know any musical theory so I'm describing it as best as I can) Like say you got a chord G then you'll go into F# major next while the melody goes higher.

    to me; the colour of the blackadder is kind of this preparatory phrase in the music. in the japanese, iki sugi (going to extreme/ going to cool)* implies that "we are going even further beyond"** kind of a "plus ultra"** kind of saying. thus with the progression, yes it climbs and instead of a reaching the summit/apotheosis, you hit this colour of the blackadder and realize you can "go even further beyond"**, thus it sells the climb of the progression. I can only imagine what it would be like to hit that super satifying I from V after the blackadder. *sorry my japanese is super rudimentary **sorry anime fan, had to get those dbz and heroaca references

I wanna analyze jpop and rock so baad to be able to write my own music but I just cant figure it out. Are you born with that ability to hear the chords?

  • @CadenceHira

    @CadenceHira

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not at all. I have absolute pitch so it does help, but a lot of being able to figure out chords is a combination of practice+experience. Definitely practice hearing the basic chord qualities and sevenths, then start adding extensions/inversions/hybrids etc., then practice analyzing tunes you like. It's perfectly fine if it takes a while, by doing this your ears get good quickly and listening to a genre you're well versed in turns into "confirming the expected chords" vs "analyzing the exceptions", allowing you to analyze tunes much quicker. Hope this helps!

    it's pretty much just tritone substitution by my ear. Doesn't really need a new name. Maybe it's more ambiguous cause the tritone sub doesn't have a 3 in it. But, so what if it doesn't have a 3? Still sounds like tritone sub. Nothing really new here except you spell it in a weird slash notation.

  • @CadenceHira

    @CadenceHira

    Жыл бұрын

    It definitely is tritone sub, i don't think they're mutually exclusive. the whole "blackadder" stuff is just noting the specific, strangely ubiquitous voicing (augmented triad over root a tritone/major 2nd down. the voicing+no3rd makes the chord hybridized, thus the slash notation)
