I’ve just got one, and am finding that my ring finger and pinkie are struggling to even move the springs on their own. Is it better to do the whole hand exercise first before moving on to the individual fingers?
There's so much positivity in this comments section. By the channel owner, but also users in general. It made me subscribe. And thanks also for the video!
You're welcome, and thank you 😊

I saw a guy saying that you CAN'T use steel strings on classical guitars, unless... You use low gauge strings, there's a specific string model he recommended, the Daddario exl120, which has about the same tension as a nylon set and it was designed for beginner electric guitar players, since the strings are thinner and will bend more easily.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. Thomastik-Infeld actually makes steel strings for classical guitars called "Classical S" I did a review of them here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGVkmcRufbm7ops.html
I just purchased this very guitar for myself as a beginner. I "noodled around" on guitars in my younger years, but never seriously committed to a regular learning discipline, and so never got beyond knowing a few chords and simple strumming. I have always been attracted to fingerstyle playing and finally decided to see if i could get anywhere with it. Out of all of the guitars that I researched on the internet, the Taylor Academy 12N seemed to me to offer the most for its price. One of the things that kept me from going further with learning in the past was that most of the guitars that I could afford as a beginner did not have good sound and were not easy to play, and as a result, I got discouraged to continue. After seeing and listening to the Academy 12N, I came to the conclusion that this was a very good quality guitar to learn on, and also one that would be good for the long run. So far nothing has changed my opinion on this, although I will say that I am a beginner with little knowledge about guitars. I do have a question for you: as an older beginner, I am finding the strings that come with the guitar to be a little hard on my fingers. I do understand that it will take time to toughen my fingers, but I was wondering if there are any "softer" or more "comfortable" nylon strings that you know of that would be a bit easier for a beginner with this guitar?
I absolutely love my Taylor Academy 12e-N and play it every day Dennis, but I also found that the D'Addario EJ46FF Hard Tension Carbon Strings that come factory fitted a little bit hard for my arthritic fingers. Try the D'Addario EJ45 nylon strings they're much easier to play. I did a review of them on my Taylor Academy 12e-N here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHiZ2tSGYtDTctI.html
@@AlanRoyHocking Wow! Thanks for the swift response! I DID find your review on those strings after leaving my comment, and I think I will give them a try, along with the Alba String beads.
@denniswade4998 You're welcome Dennis, let me know how you get on with them. If you don't like tying the luthier knots on the bridge, then the D'Addario EJ32C Folk Ball End strings are a great option as well and almost identical to the EJ45 strings. I did a review of them here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/laiBytaNaNvel7A.html I stopped using the Alba guitar beads on my Taylor because the back of the bridge where they sit is recessed, and they don't sit completely flat. The D'Addario EJ32C folk strings are just like the EJ45 strings but with ball ends so much easier to fit.
So good video!👍👍👍
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it 😊
You can buy steel-string guitar with wide neck. Why buy classical guitar if you like the sound of steel?
Yes, I'm going to buy one John. This was just a review of the Thomastik-Infeld Classical S Steel Strings for a Classical Guitar.
@@AlanRoyHocking Good on you mate. But, I don't know who make a 52mm-wide neck steel though.
@johnlay3040 The largest I've found so far is a 48mm wide neck which is the same as my Taylor Academy 12e-N on a Harley Benton guitar
@@AlanRoyHocking Do you find that ok?
@johnlay3040 Yes, the 48mm wide neck is perfect for my stubby little fingers
Great!
Thank you! 😊
That a beautiful Song and your voice is perfect for it. Thank you 😊❤
Thank you Richard I'm glad you liked it 😊
😮somehow tie the old steel string ball ends onto the new nylon ones.. has anybody had any success with this?
Interesting question, Olivia. I personally haven't tried it, so I can't say if it would work or not. Let's see if anyone else has tried it and can give us some feedback 😊
If you live in an apartment and don’t want to be loud then nylon works well
Absolutely Charles 💯
What are the back and sides? I couldn't understand
Hi Steve, the guitar has a solid lutz spruce top with layered sapele back and sides
Without this beads
There's lots of ways to do it. It's just a matter of personal choice
I tie ball end on basses and nylon lutiher knot
Yes, I've seen a few people do that 👍
Yes, I did it witn my piezo steel string e-guitar and it's just great. Go for it.
Excellent! 👍
@@AlanRoyHocking Luthier said it won't really work, it won't be loud enough (not true), it won't sound good (yeah right, it sounds fantastic), it will buzz (nope, and I lowered the action like crazy, more than my electric).... I'm sure luthiers know what they are doing, but they don't like to go out of the ordinary....
@hhy2k Ha Ha! 🤣🤣 So true!
ive done it to lots of my old guitars over the years...a few tweaks, nut . bridge etc and theres no prolbems, play and sound fine
Thanks for the feedback Barry I appreciate it 👍
I have a Vintage Stella H1141 and I’m going to try to put Low tension nylon strings on it. Will the strings stay in place without filing the nut and bridge down?
You won't know without trying the strings first unfortunately.
@@AlanRoyHocking im using the D'Addario EJ32C Folk Ball End Nylon Strings so im pretty sure they should work. Im doing this to recreate the 'Something in the way" nirvana tone because Kurt Cobain used his vintage stella with the same body shape as mine and he put 5 nylon strings on it
@zalionvr3658 I used the D'Addario EJ32C Folk Ball End Nylon Strings on my Ovation CC57 Shallow Back in this video, and I only had to file out the slot in the nut for the thicker G 3rd nylon string to make it fit flush but I could have left it as it was as well. Let me know how you get on with them 👍

Great feeling strings. Not quite as bright of a tone as I'm used to. Great strings nonetheless.
Thanks for your feedback, Randall. I appreciate it 👍

What is the nut width? Thanks!
Hi Sam, I mentioned the nut width in the video. It's 48mm - 1.7/8 inches

What guitar are you using in this lovely video?
Hi Micha, it's my Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15E Exotic Koa Parlor Guitar. I did a full review of it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iHidx8N9ZMLRfqg.html
The John Pearse PJ116 aren't exactly the same at the T-I KF116 because the KF are flat wound, and the PJ are round wound
Ahh okay Brent thanks for pointing that out. That's obviously why there's such a price difference then. 👍
@@AlanRoyHocking yeah, I was excited for a minute! lol I use flat strings on all my electric guitars, so I'm considering them if/when I pick up a nylon string guitar, too.
Muito bom!
Thank you 😊
Is there anyone else struggling move ring finger independently? I find the default tension a bit high for weak fingers.
Hi Pama, just squeeze as far as you can go without overdoing it, and you'll find you will be able to squeeze further as you build up your strength slowly
Great review. Liked and subscribed.
Thank you Timothy, I'm glad you liked the review, and I appreciate the sub 😊
The ball end doest hurt the back part of the guitar?
Hi Pablo, No, the ball ends do not damage the bridge at all. If they did, major string manufacturers like D'Addario, Martin, Ernie Ball, La Bella, and Fender wouldn't make them. They're perfectly safe to use. 👍
@@AlanRoyHocking ohh ok. I didn't know that they make it too. I thought just Ernesto palla
@pablohu6935 All the major string manufacturers offer ball end nylon strings. You'll find a playlist of all the other ball end nylon strings I've reviewed on my homepage. Let me know how you get on with them if you decide to try them 👍
Love the sound of these on my all hog parlor. Funny thing you mentioning that they don't have a lot of string screech. In my experience these are the screechiest strings I've ever used, and that point alone has me doubting them after my current stock dries up.
Yes, I noticed after I did the review that they are, in fact, quite screechy, and I've gone over to the Martin Silk And Steel Strings on this parlor now
Thank you for contrasting them, I absolutely prefer the latter. I don't know much about strings but I know I love how…full it sounds? Just lovely. How have they held up for you over time?
You're welcome Susan. I'm glad you found the video useful, and I prefer the Martin Silk And Steel strings as well. Not only do they have a better tone (in my opinion) they seem to last forever 👍
I bought them and just adore the tone. I wanted to ask if you had any recommendations for nylon strings as well? I have a cordoba mini that my kid has been playing a lot, and I’d love something lighter tension. Thanks again, I love it!!
I should have mentioned it’s the mini ii mahogany - I don’t know if the smaller scale and wood would affect your recommendation!
@susanhouwen225 Cordoba guitars are normally strung with Savarez strings, but the most popular nylon strings on the market and the industry standard are D'Addario EJ45 loved by professionals and students alike. I did a review of them here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHiZ2tSGYtDTctI.html They're only 85.85 lbs overall set tension. If you want something slightly lower tension, then the D'Addario EJ27N students' classical strings are a good choice.
The shorter scale length will give you a lower tension anyway. What strings do you have on it at the moment? Do you want a brighter tone or a mellower tone?
This video is worth its weight in gold vs the thousands of internet opinions saying not to do this ,(cough:reddit:quora) . Thank you 🙏😁
How do they compare to La Bella Vivace HT?
Hi Davide, I've never tried La Bella Vivace HT, so I can't say, but I've put them on my list for a future review, so stay tuned 😊
@@AlanRoyHocking thanx
@davidederosi6068 You're welcome 😊
I have been using Martin Retro (monel) strings on my okoume acoustic guitar (Ibanez AW54CE). With the original phosphor-bronze strings, the treble was just too subdued, choked off. The monel strings really opened it up. I might give some silk & steel strings a try on that guitar, as it seems they have some nice brightness to them, but they will have to really shine to get me to switch from the monel.
I tried the Martin Retro Monel strings on this little Harley Benton Parlor, and I really liked them, but I prefer the Martin Silk and Steel Strings much better. Let me know what you think if you try them 👍
I'm player oud arabic instrument other and i will use this string for my instrument i like this sound i think will be good
Excellent! I'm glad you found my review useful. Let me know how you get on with the strings 👍
@@AlanRoyHocking we have 11 string Each tune is on two double strings and only one string single it mean i will take two packages and strings tunes from F C G D A F in guitar E B G D A E
@user-sc1yq6es4k Ahh, okay, that will be interesting. Let me know how it works out 👍
Thanks Alan for a really comprehensive review. I'm looking for a nylon string electro acoustic so recently road-tested a couple of options - an Alvarez and Cordoba in the £600 - £700 price range. Both very nicely finished and tuneful although, being new and not run-in, they were both a little warm sounding. Interestingly, I had to work a little harder to dig into the harmonix (hope that makes sense!). I asked to try something a little more forward sounding and was given the Taylor to try. Instantly it felt comfortable and very playable with excellent articulation and tonal balance. Slightly more forward sounding too. It has me sold!
You're welcome Nick. I'm glad you found my review useful. I fell in love with my Taylor the moment I played it, and it's just gotten better over the years. 👍
How often do you do these exercises, considering you are also regularly playing the guitar? I’m coming back from a pinky overuse injury and need to balance practice with strengthening.
Hi Marcus, I started daily when I first got it, but now I just use it when I don't play, which isn't very often, to be honest. I certainly wouldn't recommend you overdo it if you have any injuries. You might even want to ask your doctor for proper professional advice before using it.
Is this comparable to the size of the Maton Mini? It looks like a really comfy size.
This is a parlour size guitar. I don't actually know what size a Maton Mini is, but parlour guitars are small and very comfortable
❤ Hello! What is it u playing, sir?

@romanimre okay Roman let me know how you get on and what you have found👍
The wood thickness from steel guitar is made for reverberate steel strings not nylon. How is the sound for you?
The sound is good, Carlos, very mellow but obviously, there is less volume from the nylon strings than you get with steel strings
@@AlanRoyHocking ok maybe I will try. Plugged must be good the sound I guess. I went to some music stores today and the people there was telling me to not do that but id you say that the sound is fair enough maybe I will put nylon
@carloslukather6658 Plugged in they're fine, but it will never sound exactly the same as a guitar that's been built for nylon strings because of the heavier woods and stronger bracing. Try it and see for yourself. You can always switch it back to steel strings if you don't like the sound.
@@AlanRoyHocking yes. Did you had to fix the nut and the bridge?
@carloslukather6658 The 3rd G string is thicker than a steel G so you might have to file the nut slot slightly and you may need to loosen the truss rod slightly to compensate for the lower string tension on the neck but try the strings first because I didn't have to do anything on my Ovation. But every guitar is different obviously
I just got this in the mail today. I'm an intermediate pianist and I hate when I come back from a week hiatus of busyness that my fingers feel weak and soft. I am looking forward to using this while on breaks at work or drinking my morning coffee.
Excellent Adrian, let me know how you get on with it 👍
I was thinking about putting nylon strings on my steel sting guitar because I prefer the nylon string sound they're easier on the fingers.
Try it and let me know how you get on 👍
Sound good like more tone lol
Yes, I liked it 😊
