I wish the people telling these great stories would get at least the unit designation correct, the purple heart battalion was the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate) originally from Hawaii. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was primarily people from the main land, from internment camps. The 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate) was incorporated into the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, it replaced the 1st Battalion which was a training Battalion back in the United States. the correct unit designation was the 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team. Which is now a reserve unit stationed in the Pacific.
During the New York power failure of November 9, 1965, it was ordered that power from the Missouri Basin dams was to be "shipped" east to fill the load vacuum which existed to get the Northeast powered-up once again. Ft. Randall's power output was one of them.
The double circuit Ft. Randall-Sioux City 230-kV transmission line and I share a birthday: 1953. Hard to believe that line is now 70 years old. I remember when it was only 10 years of age and it still delivers power as a Bureau installation. If you drive across the old U. S. 16 Missouri River bridge at Chamberlain, you are driving across the old Wheeler, SD bridge, which allowed U. S. 18/281 visitors to travel between Platte, SD and towns in north Nebraska, such as Spencer. Wheeler as a town was to be submerged under the reservoir of Lake Francis Case and the bridge was moved upriver. The town's cemetery was moved, along with most of the buildings, houses and other manageable assets, prior to the lake filling. Wheeler no longer exists. U. S. 18/281 now traverses Ft. Randall Dam's top roadway across the Missouri River instead of the old Wheeler Bridge.

I can't under stand the commenter/narrator? Sounds like she's in the closet?
Try listening with earbuds or headphones, it will be a lot clearer. 😊
Did a native man really come into the store and warn them about the coming winter?
Hi Stacy. The author, CIndy Wilson, shared with us that "no one really knows." The passage is included in Pioneer Girl, Wilder's earliest version of her autobiography. But it could be that her father repeated what he had read in area newspapers and it was remembered by Wilder as local. Regional newspapers reported similar warnings. The warnings were reported to readers as a way to be prepared. There was an underlying respect that if the area natives felt the upcoming winter was to be bad, the warnings should be respected. Hope this helps!
Glad I came across this video. Joseph is a prolific and accomplished South Dakota native an I appreciate his voice/POV. I need to become more familiar with his writing.
The Ingalles live in all of us who know them

So did Laura and her family almost starve or not?
Yes, they did almost starve. Because they were the first family in De Smet, they were on the scene and using up their supplies much longer than most of the town folk, and it does take a few years to get virgin sod producing vegetables. The wild birds and animals had instinctually known that the hard winter was coming and had headed elsewhere, so there was no game to hunt. Once the trains were unable to get through, there were no more supplies to be had.
I liked😊😊
Thanks Victoria for viewing. We have a monthly history talk that you may enjoy. www.sdhsf.org/events
Sorry you don’t have any comments or sub and likes 😢😢😢😢
What is the difference between Pioneer girl Annotated Autobiography and Pioneer girl revised edition? Which is better?
Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography is a typed out version of Wilder’s original 1930 “Pioneer Girl” manuscript, with lots of annotations. Pioneer Girl: The Revised Texts is three different versions of that original text, created by Wilder’s daughter Rose Wilder Lane as she tried rather desperately to sell the manuscript to a New York publisher in 1930. Lane “ran it through her typewriter” three times. The book has the three versions lined up side by side, so that the reader can see what Lane deleted and altered. There is a fourth column of annotations, which follow up on what happened to the deleted parts. Wilder ended up putting most of them back in. The next volume, Pioneer Girl: The Path into Fiction (to be released on May 30, 2023) focuses on a short children’s story that Lane pulled from the “Pioneer Girl” manuscript and tried to sell to New York publishers. This one met with success and became Little House in the Big Woods.
@@southdakotahistory thank you for the descriptions of each book!
I grew up in Corsica and clearly remember the coverage of this case. However, at the time (I was in high school) I didn't know LaDonna had graduated from Corsica. It is so strange to know her classmates.
Hope you enjoyed this history talk event!
Very interesting. Hopefully I can find this book at my library.
I hope so too!
We are pleased to report that Pioneer Girl: The Path into Fiction is almost finished. This fourth book from the Pioneer Girl Project concentrates on the writing and editing of Wilder’s first novel, Little House in the Big Woods (1932). If all goes well, it will be released in the late spring/early summer of 2023. Learn more about the Pioneer Girl Project and books. pioneergirlproject.org

Super. Would love to visit with you about your grandfather. Our email is in the About us info.
I'm curious to know if any of these books will end up as ebooks? Or in Large Print?
Ronna - so sorry that we missed your question. Pioneer Girl the Annotated Autobiography is currently available as an eBook. www.sdhspress.com/books/pioneer-girl-the-annotated-autobiography
Very interesting background material to Laura Ingalls Wilder's autobigrafical novel The Long Winter.
Melissa - you may be interested in our Pioneer Girl Project. We have another book coming out in 2023 called Pioneer Girl: The Path into Fiction. This fourth book from the Pioneer Girl Project concentrates on the writing and editing of Wilder’s first novel, Little House in the Big Woods (1932). pioneergirlproject.org
I was channel surfing and ran across a PBS special with your music and reading, and it froze me in my tracks, the vast majority of content on any form of media is contrived and you radiate authenticity in everything you say and do. What a refreshing change, keep up the good work!
Thanks Brad. Appreciate the comment. Have a great day.
