I like your video of not using a shoulder rest, but you are entirely wrong with the wrist vibrato. With a wrist vibrato you have much more fine control of both the width and speed of your vibrato. There are no issues using a wrist vibrato on the highest notes. I have rarely if ever hear someone that used an arm vibrato that doesn't have a warbling sound. If you like arm vibrato this is fine but don't say it is impossible to use a wrist vibrato up the strings including to the top of the G string with any finger.

It's pretty impresive, thanks for sharing, but I hear this plugin doesn't get all the harmonics, If u listen to it u still can hear some harsh frequencies. I think the best solution is to get a mic like shure sm57, the other type of mics takes too much information we don't need from the violin

If the neck is short by the nature, then you can play without shoulder rest, otherwise the left shoulder becomes higher than the right and leads to scoliosis

I lovw playing without SR but someonw please help. My violin keeps slipping off my shoulder, collarbone when I wear any shirts or tahirts. Ive tried leather, chamois, to increase friction but nothing although leather is close.

I am a Dutch guitarplayer/musician and I hope I can contribute something to your technical advice. Have a listen to the soulfull interpretation of traditional Irish music by the Irish fiddle player Martin Hayes together with guitarist Dennis Cahill. Another very important advice : be aware of the laws of nature regarding the movements and the mass and weight of your bowing arm, hand and bow. So to say action, reaction, gravity, cenrtrifugal forces. For a natural "3-dimensional bouncing" rhythm, also be aware of the shaking mass of your hand in conjunction with the weight of your bow, which you will only experience when your wrist is not unnaturally fixed. And at last : Not all quarter/eight/sixteenth etc. notes have exactly the same length !! Because : rhythm is meant to create ENERGY !! In natural phrasing of a melodic sentence, the energy build up-release starts with the awareness of the energy of the rhythm in connection/relation/ "co-hearance" with the ascending (often needs energy) and descending (often builds up energy) of the melody...You can find a fine natural authentic lively rocking energetic rendition of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos with the ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln under the inspiring "guidance" of Reinhard Goebel. I say guidance because every musician in this ensemble plays with deep understanding, feeling and and total soul !! In fact, all that I have written applies for all music, musician and instruments. For wind instruments : be aware of the tension/release of the muscles and mass of lips, cheeks, throat, belly and the action/reaction in the movement of the mass of the fingers. Last words : play with/in total beingthereness/awareness with al your senses/mind and awareness of the space and atmosphere/ambiance.

what about shifting with different fingers, more precisely the note C 1st position 2nd finger to note D 3rd position 1st finger, which finger makes the shift? i keep the 2nd, go to 3rd and after arrive i change to 1st finger? or every time i must put 1st shift first on B and go to 3rd with it?

I am a reasonably accomplished pianist, but took up the viola 8 years ago (with no previous string experience) as a retirement project. My in-person lessons for 4 years were really waste of time and money as my teacher - perhaps rather typically here in the UK - was fixated with getting me through the ABRSM grades, when what I most wanted was to explore the instrument and create the best possible sound. During the pandemic I turned to youtube. You and one other are now my daily "go to" tutorials. I have learned so much and made 10 times more progress than with those paid lessons, to the point I now lead the viola section in one community orchestra (which includes a number of folk who have played all their lives) and appear sufficiently capable to make up the numbers are other orchestras' concerts. I particularly enjoy the analogies you make with other skills and pastimes. Thank you!

From what I think arm vibrato has a warm tone and is good for pieces like Meditation de Thais- Massenet But wrist vibrato has a more brighter tone and is good for pieces such as Brahm's concerto in D major

One thing nobody talks about it learning to hear. It's fundamental to intonation, to sound, to phrasing, and generally sounding not bad. Record your singing voice in a recorder, and it won't sound like you expected. Next, learn to hear your singing voice and make changes until it sounds acceptable to you on the recorder, and apply what you learned to the violin. You can also practice hearing the pitch in your head just before you play it.

Most violinists play with a more oblique left hand position, I have been trying a more guitar- like position but find this puts a lot of strain on the hand and arm, also for me It makes me play more on the finger tip and less on the pad.

I mean... if it works it works but the posture looks really bad. And there is no need to move that much during playing, it's not sustainable... Bad advice video for new and intermediate players.

I had a close friend who was an American violin soloist. He was Maestro Zukerman’s pupil before and he shared the exact same right hand techniques and exercises you showed in these video, it was painful at the beginning when I tried to control my bow with these Galamian style bow grip! I accidentally dropped my bow many times on my bed😂😂😂 it helped me to find my own sound few months later, at the end it also benefits my own solo and chamber music career a lot now! Language can’t express how grateful I am to my friend! I was surprised by you showed this “Bank Account” knowledge in your KZread channel for free which you can easily make tons of money with it. If Filip bought this violin, and it wasn’t given to him by the company, this is an actual review. I like the way he presented it, and he was honest about the bow. I heard a scraping sound from the D and G strings during the Ravel piece. I don’t know what caused that.

Every time I listen to a new recording of Erlkonig I pay special attention to the section at 2:49. Every single violinist I've found so far has either committed what I call the "cardinal sin" of this piece, or at least something close to it -- but you didn't! You stayed at tempo! You win!

$100 is a lot for violin strings. $3000 for a violin sounds like a lot, but not any more it isn’t. I’m getting a luthier built ukulele for $1000. That’s cheap, for a custom made instrument.
