What are your insights on drinking alchohol and the complexities of violin technique? Obviously if we drink too much, we can't even walk, we can't play violin well. Is there a healthy moderation to drinking and still playing violin well? Or is any small amount of alcohol bad for us professional violinists? I'm curious of your personal insights Filip please! Thanks sincerely!

Haha good question! I usually don't drink before a performance, but it has happened in the past that I had a glass or two before going on stage if there's a reception before the concert etc. I feel like it definitely takes the edge off a little, but at the same time the edge is something that I enjoy and that makes the performance more exciting somehow as well. Also, I'm not a fan of making the success of a performance dependent on whether I've had a drink or not. I don't like any kind of borderline superstitious beliefs and outside helps/influences of any kind in oder to make a performance successful. For me nothing beats simply being super prepared. Also I like having 100% of my brain capacity available to me when I'm on stage and anything that dumbs me down even a little is not much of an advantage to me 🤣. Unless you are suffering from absolutely crippling stage fright, I would not recommend having a drink before going on stage. I would still recommend the techniques described in my video. Then again, everyone's different. I have a number of musician friends who do enjoy a drink before going on stage, saying that it's all about the right dosage. Obviously i'm not encouraging heavy drinking on here, but all I can say is, try having a little drink before performing and see what it does to you! 😅

@@filippogady Thanks and I agree with your insights. A tiny amount of drinking before performing may be okay, but I still significantly feel an impairment in speed, dexterity, coordination, intonation, awareness and memory. Even if we indulge in heavy drinking after playing, it still impairs our practice the next day, due to hangover effects. So along with the privilege and blessing of being a decent violinist, comes the responsibility and curse of not overindulging in my love of whiskey and red wine. hahaha. At least, adhere to strict self-discipline of healthy moderation.
