    How much extra drag can you get with changing the orientation of the washers with still having a good free spool and what orientation would you recommend? Thanks for the great video

    Thanks for checking out the video. I find it best to respond to this type of question with a question.... how much drag do you need? Regarding free spool... it's relative to your spacing. Playing with the orientation may require adding something else to keep the spacing relatively the same.

    Hi. Only one suggestion is to feed the loop through the eye of the hook in the opposite direction. Front to back and then loop over the hook. This way when it’s pulled up tight the main line exits to the front of the eye. Having the line exiting at the front helps turn the hook in to the mouth and results in more hook ups. If the line exits to the back of the eye it can turn the hook out and you could miss the hook hold.

    Thanks for watching and commenting! I like it! Thanks for the tip. Yes, I think I agree... for circle hooks. Although I used a circle hook in this example, I used to only use J hooks when I was younger. I think my method would be better for J hooks, but it would be good to try both ways and see the difference in hook up ratios. Stay tuned for more!

    Thanks for checking out the video. Very good reels, they are. Yes, parts for Fin-Nors might be difficult, so maintaining what you have is prudent. Once a year should suffice if your using 30 to 60 times a year. If you're fighting the fish properly, even sting rays are not much of issue regarding wear and tear.... as long as you used a net, and didn't try cranking the fish up to the pier with the reel. 🙂

    I guess a good test to find out if the gears are aligned properly is to spin the reel fast at the end when fully reassembled, and wait to see if the gravity brings the handle naturally to its lowest position. Any resistance from the improperly aligned gears should prevent this.

  • @TSGReelService
    @TSGReelService7 күн бұрын

    Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! In the future, please include the specific time you're referring to if referencing something specific in the video. I'm guessing you're referring to the alignment of the drive and oscillation gear... I like where you're going, but even if aligned correctly, sometimes the reel may do that if there's too much fresh grease on the gears. There is really only one specific way for the drive and osc to mesh, and you should be able to feel that right away by just putting the side cover on and giving the rotor a gentle spin.... or very slowly sipping the pinion gear in your fingers if the rotor isn't on yet... you'll feel if it's "wrong". If you were referring to something else, let me know the time in the video so I can check it out. Spread the word about the channel.

    @@TSGReelService Thank you very much for the comprehensive response, and the fantastic work and information that you do and provide. Noted re pointing to a place in the video, will keep it in mind for future. I did check as you suggested as well, but without the cover back on, and moving the main gear, and then pinion too. I guess because of the low ratio of teeth on the main gear that couples with the oscillating gear, the arrows will be very much off even if you are one tooth out, so I didn't have the problem with aligning, but note your point and the fellow from Bangkok comment below. I'll have to take it apart to service bait runner drag so will keep all of above in mind! Thanks again, you deserve a million subscribers.

    @@TSGReelService spoke with Shimano in California they say light oil except for Calcutta reels, Penn says light oil . Accurate says light oil. But watching some folks on line that service reels they say, bone dry as it's a friction device. • @TSGReelService
    @TSGReelService7 күн бұрын

    @@ddube1407 You, better than most, know that repair guys all do things a little differently. You should continue doing what you do if it makes sense to you and you haven't had any reported issues doing it that way. Or follow the manufacturers recommendation for their specific reels. Unlikely oil decreases longevity, but rather the opposite. I agree regarding the friction device argument, but only so far... there's also mechanics involved in that "stopping" action, not just the "surface friction" between the pins and sleeve. The following is is a general statement, not an absolute.... I DON'T always oil. If I touch most anything other than the Shimano Super Stoppers, I oil if I clean them.... and don't if I don't clean. The Super Stoppers get noisy sometimes (usually because of use), and there I will add the slightest drop of oil (even though Shimano says to run them dry) to quiet them down a little.... after cleaning it, of course.

    Hello - I have a Shimano Baitrunner 4000D. The issue I have is when the drag is pretty loose and you jerk on the line the drag knob will turn about a 1/2 turn and will tighten the drag. After a few jerks, the drag will get fairly tight and the drag knob will stop turning when jerking. Could this be a bad drag knob? The reel has done this since it was new 6 months ago right out of the box. Thanks in advance - Brandon

  • @TSGReelService
    @TSGReelService13 күн бұрын

    Hey Brandon. Hmmm.... if it's been happening since new, I would check the drag stack.... make sure you have one of the keyed (not eared) washers at the top of the stack. Drag stack is correct?.... try using a new drag knob. You could also try lubricating the rubber a little to see if that helps. Barry

    Hello. I have a Daiwa BG3500. The other night I added a washer to even the line spool. Line was even after! While fishing today, while casting I heard my drag came “loose.” (I heard it clicking at the lure/line went out. I tried to tighten the drag knob but it does not tighten. • @TSGReelService
    @TSGReelService16 күн бұрын

    Thanks for checking out the video and reaching out. VERY GOOD explanation of your problem. I'm assuming you added the "line lay" washer on the shaft beneath the spool, at that the exposed threads on the shaft still have room to catch the threads on the drag knob, and that nothing is stripped or cross threaded. The likely answer is that the drag knob "gave out" and you need to replace it. Hope this helps! Spread the word about the channel.

    @@Unplugged704 I don't think the lure weight is the issue, unless you had the drag constantly locked down to fish it. The drag is not doing any work when you're casting. I took it apart and did not see any sand or other issues that I could see with my eye. But this video confirms my suspicions about this reel. It will be something I will service regularly. I also bought a penn spin fisher v 4500 and that reel developed a similar issue quickly but worse. Tear down after tear down and it makes no sense to me. 🙂 thanks for watching! I'll give an opinion here, which I don't do often because, you know.... have to be PC and such (☺).... although I don't like it that much either, the main reason the VI has the incremental live liner drag in the lever is because customers keep asking for more and more "waterproof-ness", and Pure Fishing (Penn) can only continue making money if they do what the customer wants. So let's blame the customers for having the audacity to ask for a completely sealed baitrunner/live liver reel. And, even if one day they did, one would still need to care for it or they could end up with the mess in this video. Spread the word about the channel.
