Also happens in reels using the worm gear and pawl pin method to move the main shaft up and down. Again its due to excessive up and down play on the worm gear, which can be easily corrected with shims. Intrestingly some reels using the crossblock method, use a rubber Oring on the pin of the oscillation gear to reduce the clicking sound.

Thanks for watching and sharing. I don't hear it too much on those worm gear spinners.... or maybe I'm just forgetting. Yes, using extra shims at the bottom can help that vertical play, but it's a balancing act regarding the number of shims to add.... too many and the reel can bind up as the pawl changes direction, so you have to get it to where there is the slightest amount of play without being too stiff. The reason you need the slightest amount of play is because of the inherent weight of the spool always working against the worm/pawl. I like the o-ring around the post.... it definitely helps the block channel/oscillation gear post gap for the vertical movement, but it also helps slow down the rotation of the block. I think using a block track system along with the o-ring, plus a bearing/bushing over the crosswind gear post would be the way to go.... then all you have to worry about is light lubrication. Thanks brother! A little secret.... it doesn't really bother me either.... most of the time..... but then there's those times where it's all I can hear when I'm fishing lures, and it becomes REALLY annoying. Likewise on the weekend. Thanks. Barry

A small o-ring on that small post will do wonders in eliminating that click sound.

Thanks for watching and adding to the possible remedies. Yes, it can certainly help.... like on some of the Daiwa reels like the Saltists and Saltigas. I don't know the science behind it, but I was always worried it would slow down the oscillation, but honestly never saw that happen. I felt it was there more for the click-free, lateral smoothness of operation, but I can see how it could help with the rotational (vertical) "click" against the oscillation gear. Thanks again. Great vid! I tend to pack the block with a little more corrosion X grease it seams to be thicker. Don’t matter to me if it slows the reel down a little. Just don’t like to here the oscillating tick with Penn reels lol

Thanks! I get you on that Penn clicking sound, brother. Although they're a big culprit, it's not just them. Now, you have an understanding on why it might happen. Agreed regarding the CorrosionX grease.... just a little too thick for me to use.... but it doesn't mean I will never use it.

Thanks for tip, just wondering if removing ( filing) a tiny amount of material off the face of the cross-wind gear stud so it interfaces with the cross-wind block a bit closer but not rubbing on it would help reduce the " slop" you show on the Penn 550SS ? Doesn't appear that anything can help the Shakespear though,....... because it's a Shakespear!!!

See this video for my always-in-the-car reel. if you haven't already: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4aJtaqYqcrWkag.html Regarding filing down the post on the crosswind block, yes, in theory, but I didn't suggest doing that since there's a fine line between perfect (in height and on the circumference) and too much.... and since there are other factors that can contribute to the click. Doesn't mean you couldn't try... just have a backup x-wind gear and block handy, just in case.

I agree, the risk far out-weighs the reward for a noise that has no effect on reel performance, just like to see if a little tighter tolerance would make any difference, as far as Shakespear goes ,I admit I own dozens, some dating to the late 40's and all years in between, but as with everything , " they don't make em like they used to!@@TSGReelService

So true regarding them not making them like they used to. Yes, in my opinion, it's better to just deaden the sound than play around with the design. @@pennyan2057

i have this problem with a brand new penn slammer iv, i alreade replace it but the new one has the same problem, i dont know if its normal or its a problem with this slammer
