While this review is fine, it's clearly missing the cultural and time sensitive aspect of Japanese culture. I don't know if there is an analysis provided by anyone who was alive during this time in Japan, who has both a cultural and language connection to the film. If this person exists, I hope they discuss this movie.

Ive watched this movie at least 25 times. Pretty much nailes it. The game is to figure out which Aaron is being dragged around during the initial explanation. Aaron 1 or Aaron 2. Or a mix of both? Good luck lol

I get why they did embarrassing things to tap into other universes. Because of the theme that nothing really matters and we're a small speck... but that's why I have an issue with the movie, because another theme is also.... that everything she loves matters... her family, her husband, her daughter.

You overuse the word altruism as if you just learned it and you have such a narrow worldview as to interpret what people from other cultures do out of love as unrealistic altruism. You might as well comment that all the bowing between the Japanese (especially between parents and children) in this movie were unrealistic. I've seen personalities similar to Noriko in Asian cultures, which you might not see as authentic from the American lens you view people's motives.

Thank you for this review. It restores my faith in humanity. A bit over the top statement, but honestly that's how I feel. I just watch World of tomorrow, which I feel is on another level, when it comes to depiction of actual nihilism. I absolutely love it. The little girl rules. Stay strong. Looking forward to new uploads.

finished the movie and I was so curious why people in favor of it like so much to attack personally to the critics. And the Oscar Awards? Hell no! It's just so bad to the degree that I started questioning is it just me. The movie is such a con.

Titane >>>> House that Jack Built. That’s edgy for the sake of being edgy and very self indulgent. I think that videos like this lack the understanding of film and art. This is just trying be different. Also quite being so mean spirited it’s not a good look.

I'm wary of calling Japanese art minimalist because it could be unnecessary pigeon holing, Ozu can very well be interpreted as anti-minimalist, in that particular Ozu way of conveying layered multiple, sometimes almost contradictory meanings and expression.

I admire the visual style and how original and outside the box this movie was but i didnt really understand what it was about. I probably need to rewatch it. I will say that the movie has a rabid fanbase (mostly redditors) who will come for your blood if anyone critisizes it.

I'm late to the shit show, because I just watched it..well, half of it. I've watched alot of movies in 64 yrs, and I couldn't finish this one it was that bad. It was just a scrambled up, plain stupid movie. No way to make a connection to any character, and as much as I love Jaime Lee Curtis, I never expected her to do childish slap stick comedy. Now I understand why she shouldn't have won an Oscar for it. The whole movie didn't deserve any Oscars.

Concept was fine. Execution was clunky and amateurish so much so the first 40 mins felt like 90 mins. It was a Robert Zemeckis 80s film with 40% less charm and coherence. I nominally enjoy well made movies with diverse casts, but this was over hyped to hell and back. In previous years, this film would've dropped in May, made some money to break even, and been forgotten by October. In Current Year, it gets Best Picture Oscar. Crazy.

Honestly I have a similar opinion. I don’t watch many movies but it was a Very fun movie to watch, but I couldn’t help but eyeroll at everything in a bagel and how whoever came up with it probably thought it was the funniest thing ever. Also joy’s character has to be the most insufferable because of the “I see everything and I now know objective truth and morality is a lie” thing, and everyone agrees with her, but you better still be a heckin kind person because … you just should alright!
