Ozu's pace most captures what life is like when you just sit alone and observe the world. Very meditative.

I'm glad you and seemingly everyone else in this community had a revelation because this is not doing nearly as much for me as I think it's doing for other people. I still don't understand the "By showing so little he elicits so much" argument.

And I'm watching a lot because, like I said, I want to see what everyone else sees and an argument I actually understand. I don't know why you're coming to me with this energy Karl 😅. This video conveyed a lot of brilliant notes on the film that I couldn’t really describe for myself. To the point where at the end of my Letterboxd review I linked this cause of how efficient it was at describing stuff I couldn’t from a character perspective. Really enjoyed this. ✌️

i was a little phased when i saw your channel (the eeaao is overhyped). you want it harsher came up in my feed and the title and username intrigued me so i decided to watch this video instead of the eeaao slander. the pace is great, editing clean and overall a very interesting video. thanks for putting this out :))

While this review is fine, it's clearly missing the cultural and time sensitive aspect of Japanese culture. I don't know if there is an analysis provided by anyone who was alive during this time in Japan, who has both a cultural and language connection to the film. If this person exists, I hope they discuss this movie.

I'm wary of calling Japanese art minimalist because it could be unnecessary pigeon holing, Ozu can very well be interpreted as anti-minimalist, in that particular Ozu way of conveying layered multiple, sometimes almost contradictory meanings and expression.

Great review but what do you mean by ‘uncinematic’? I couldn’t imagine anything more cinematic:-)

You overuse the word altruism as if you just learned it and you have such a narrow worldview as to interpret what people from other cultures do out of love as unrealistic altruism. You might as well comment that all the bowing between the Japanese (especially between parents and children) in this movie were unrealistic. I've seen personalities similar to Noriko in Asian cultures, which you might not see as authentic from the American lens you view people's motives.

This sounds like the epitome of empty pretentious babbling without telling anything (of worth).
