God I loved these books, picked up the second one on a discount in bargain books at 14 and became obsessed with all her books. What I thought was dark and edgy and romantic at 14 is pretty naive in retrospect lol especialy when you think about crap like twilight! A shame she never finished her amazing nightworld series. I want to reread these but I dont want to ruin the nostalgia!

I don’t like short stories unless they’re in a short story collection because then at least there connected, I understand why people don’t like short stories though because you barely get any time with the characters 😢

I think a short story has to be so perfectly crafted. But it's such a personal thing. If I start to like a character and they're gone in 40 pages I feel as though I've been left down (no matter how good what happened in those 40 pages was).

@@beingbookishpod It's mostly what I would describe as "weird horror" lol. Last Days by Brian Evenson and Dead Boys by Gabriel Squailia are two of my favorites. It's just these bizarre things that are presented casually as fact and you're like "Oh, okay, this is the world I'm in." Sometimes though you just want a fuzzy romance so I'm thinking heavily of trying to read something by Emily Henry. It makes me inwardly cringe a little but my brain wants a happy break haha. If you have "happy break" suggestions, by all means!

@@superkitten7560 I haven't read any Emily Henry, but I do get the need to occasionally have a happy break. Those books sound incredible, the sort of thing I devoured when I was younger and in a horror King, Koontz phase. If you want something light that has a romantic bit, maybe a little mystical/magical tone, then maybe Ashley Poston?

I just finished the 2nd book in the Thursday Murder Club and have come to the same conclusion as you - it's just not for me. I love that there are so many new authors every day but I always retrun to Agatha, because there is something so clever about her creations. I am in the process of reading Babel. I am enjoying it. What I'm clinging to in the story is the English conquering and exploiting these distant places for their benefit and the main character Robin having ties to both England and one of those distant lands. Through his questioning and inner monologues, I'm sure it will come to a head and choices will have to be made on his part. I want to see what happens in that regard. I feel like the one-star review for it was unfair. The magic system is whatever but there's a lot of depth to the story they seemingly ignored.
