Hammerhead Model Making

Hammerhead Model Making

I have been making scale models and miniatures for the better part of my life and I have the opportunity now to share my hobby and passion with others. I am interested in just about every genre and corner of making scale plastic replicas of Tanks, Airplanes, Cars, Ships, Sci-fi, Gundam, War Gaming Miniatures, you name it, I'll make it.

    I have two old models from the late 80s, one is a ME109G14u4 and the other is a FW-190D9 they are open but not started. i won't build them and I would hate for them to go to the trash.

    so i find for skintones, if i basecoat the flesh with a darker red, then build up a thin flesh color over it, you can get that proper skintone. when i get the opacity that i want, i use a red\brown wash. ill go back and pick out highlits with the base coler to fade in the wash. after that, i lighten the basecoat and pick out the cheeks, nose, forehead, top of ears etc. This way you end up with what apperas to be a living face instead of pale.

    @@HammerheadModelMaking dude, your washing kungfu is powerful in its water basedness, but my enamel kungfu is superior in its results. find a paint range that works for you with a simple white spirit base, I use humbrol with success (your mileage may vary but) once you get into diluting actual enamel pigments flesh can become relatively simple... and all the dirt in the world is at your brush tip... good hunting

    On colors: 1) There's no way to know whether you have the "right" color based on a video without knowing how your camera color is calibrated and having a monitor calibrated the same way. 2) Standard colors are only standard the day that the vehicle leaves the paint booth. After that, sun fading and wear will change the color anyway. 3) And standard colors, in practice in the middle of a war, are really more of a suggestion. Close enough was close enough. 4) And the appearance of colors in real life is different than the appearance on a model, even if the colors are identical. Vehicle modelers need to do more painting of light effects (at least in dioramas). People obsess way too much about model colors.

    How did you do the preshading of white prior to the blue topcoat? I just tried it for the first time and it didn’t go very well. I’m using an Iwata Eclipse, .35mm needle, Vallejo Air white, about 20 psi. The paint had lots of overstay, I wasn’t able to have a nice fine line of paint. Not sure if it’s the pressure, paint too thin or thick, wrong size nozzle, etc.

  • @HammerheadModelMaking
    @HammerheadModelMakingКүн бұрын

    I hate to say this but its really just a lot of trial and error. From your description I would say you don't have the paint thinned enough, I find the almost all Vallejo paints need to have some thinning. I use X-20A as my thinner and start with about 15-20% thinner. I find that is a good ratio to start with, then you'll just need to adjust from there to suit your needs.

  • Күн бұрын

    Ok thanks. I’ll try thinning the paint a little more.

    Yes, this was brilliant, thanks so much for sharing. Great painting and weathering too, the post-shading worked very nicely. Also the wash you used was very interesrting, being so simple (and cheap) to create and offering results that are indistinguishable from more expensive products. I guess one huge advantage of watercolors is that they can be re-activated with even a little moisture and they can be wiped off as much as you like (contrary to all acrylic washes and their infamous tidemarks - unless you use artists' gouache acrylics, which also re-activate, to make a custom home brew...). So great idea! Please do more of these longer videos, they are much better for reference, instruction and inspiration. The A-8/R2 version had the outer wing 20 mm MG-151 cannons replaced by 30 mm MK 108 cannons for a harder punch against the bombers. The Mk-108 was a short barrelled cannon, and its barell did not protrude much through the wing's leading edge, but required that "bump" on the wing upper surface, to fit inside the wing. In some of these later Sturmböcke versions of the FW-190, as you correctly guessed, the cowling machine guns firing through the propeller were removed both to save weight, and because they were relatively ineffective against the heavy allied bombers. So the Luftwaffe preferred to save the weight of the machine guns and their ammo and add the much heavier Mk-108 30mm cannons on the outer wings and in some cases also add underwing rocket pods. And yes the little fan at the front, obstructing a lot of the the view of the engine, is the BMW 801 cooling fan 🙂
