Decarli Models Cessna 172 Honduras Air Force Trainer 1/72 scale

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Greeting everyone! Here is my first build video of 2024, today I build the Decarli Models Cessna 172 in Honduras Air Force markings. This is an all resin kit and provides some unique challenges that you don't often find in plastic model kits. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Yes, resin dust is something you for sure want to avoid, but easy enough to do with a respirator. That will be nice if we get a proper Cessna 172 in plastic!

Very nice looking result out of an obviously difficult kit. RLM04 happens to be my goto yellow color also unless i jut really need a pure lemon yellow. I usually use AK real color or Mr Hobby though. I've never had good luck with spraying the vinyl based acrylics like vallejo and AK third gen. Lifecolor works good for me too when i want a non-solvent based paint.

Dear Mr Head. Actually after all this time we should be on first name terms so... Hi there Hammer, hope all is good with you and yours'. You must really have wanted/needed a kit of this particular aircraft because I can't think of any reason why a normal, sensible person would ever want to tackle such a piece of cr......... errrr, ... piece of resin. I also can't believe you turned said piece of cr.... "resin" into something that actually looks very much like the real plane. Another silk purse created from a Sow's ear. Once again, loving your videos, boldly going where none of us have ever wished to go before. Ooohs and Aaaahs etc. Hope I made you grin. Regards, Ian.

Hi Ian! You are certainly welcome to call me Brett! This was a commission build for a fine fellow in Honduras who is slowly collecting all of the aircraft his dad flew in during his service in the Honduras Air Force. This was the airplane that his father learned to fly in. So, you could say it was somewhat of a necessity to use this kit. And, in the end, in spite of the challenge it presented, it was a rewarding build. Thanks for watching, and your comments always bring a smile! Cheers!

I myself build mostly a mix of plastic and Resin kits from GW (among others), which I think are largely under detailed. But FW, by far the worst the worst resin I have encountered, makes this kit look like a breeze in comparison, always requires filling and correcting, straightening and fixing remolding in cases and I am far from a master model maker. But this looks really good, a really beautiful build in the end. A little bit puzzled as to why you chose not to use the 3D photo etch set for the console at least (or it maybe the case it doesn't it doesn't exist!).

Yeah, I've had some experience with Forge World resin kits and I agree, they are far more trouble than they are worth. As far as I know there isn't a PE sets available for this kit, that would have been nice though.

I use to fly the Cessna 172's baby brother the Cessna 152 from dirt strips all the time. They never looked that beat up and well, if it leaked like that, I wouldn't've flown it. The kit would probably have looked better with some faded paint on the wing tops going to more gloss on the side and underneath and a light dusting. Some stone chips on the propeller if you like with silver showing on the edges. Maybe some fuel stains around the wing tank filler caps or some light chipping showing the aluminum if you have some really sloppy refueling going on. Anyway, quite the build with making it out of resin and an attractive colour scheme for the 172 to be sure.

The weathering is for sure a little exaggerated, however, the client for this project supplied some photos of his dad with this specific aircraft and it was indeed quite used and abused, so I was trying to replicate what was in the photos to an extent. Thanks for watching!

80 bucks!? So are you going to be mad if I tell you that Arii did a 1/72 -172 that you could get? It has floats, but given the work you had with this, it would've been easier to scratchbuild some landing gear. The finished model looks sharp, though!

  • @HammerheadModelMaking

These are how pretty much all short run kits of subjects that didn't have mainstream releases were like before 3D printing. It's not always even necessarily that the parts were done bad originally, since the molds themselves degrade pretty quickly. I've done recasting of parts in resin and they start to deform noticeably after a pretty short time. Even the short run styrene kits had some of the same problems because the molds were also made out of materials that were cheaper and easier to work with. It's just the nature of the beast, the early casts are usually good, then they get progressively worse and worse.

@@jameshall1300 if the molds deteriorate quickly then stop making them.i understand about short runs and stuff that's not mainstream. But an inferior product isn't good enough for customers. What makes resin kits even worse is their cost. We're asked to pay a lot for subpar models. To each their own but wow!
