Silver and Solo

Hi, I'm Jen and I'm a solo 50-something learning to embrace the pre-retirement Gen-X life. Looking forward to retirement, dealing with growing older and (hopefully) wiser and trying to knock off bucket-list items along the way. I overthink most things, love visiting new places and learning about the history of everything. Subscribe to join me and start leaning into your own third act...

I like having a top sheet on my bed because I often get very hot while sleeping. I will throw off the heavy stuff and use just the sheet to cover me, which keeps me cooler but not too cold. Then, when I get cold (usually just before daybreak) I cover back up with the heavier stuff. ♌️

Nice job…I am exactly where you were when you began as far as I thought being a content creator could be for me… very real and appreciate that… I guess the good news is I already know some video editing and graphics. I also have noticed how a lot of channels have merchandise. The good news is I have done graphic design and screen printed apparel. You have helped me commit that this is the direction I should go. Thanks! I am subscribing and will watch your other videos. Decided to keep it real just like you have…when I get up and running will let you know my channel….i have decided with my extensive restaurant experience and cooking ability I am going to go the direction of cooking videos.

In one of your videos I heard you say something about being used to doing a weekly report? Was that you? I can't find it again, but I would like to know more about that, what do you evaluate each week and what kind of metrics are you looking at when you do your analysis to hold yourself accountable? A video on that would be great if you can. I may be looking to deep into it as a beginner, but I do need some kind of accountability tool. Thanks so much!

Life is short. So when you have a crush on someone walk right up to them, then walk past them a little, then keep on walking because ultimately they're not worth your time.

Thank you for sharing these moments. When I am especially in Asia invited to local food, I always say that I am due to allergy not allowed to eat something out of the water and that I have an additional allergy to meat of any kind....it is -lucky me- always respected. :-)

11:35 Not sure how it is in Canada. But in the U.S., I think that the china and silverware thing has died out. The Gen Y and Zers are more inclined to sell or giveaway their parents’ and grandparents’ china and silverware. The interest has definitely waned. That said, I remember as a kid that our homes had built in china cabinets for just that very thing! Even the little efficiency I moved into in my 20s had a built-in china cabinet! That was quite the selling point as recently as 25 years ago.

Hope these help someone; The back slapper from Cancer council Australia. Use it to put sunscreen in the places you can't reach by yourself. I use it for other prescription lotions I need. I put my phone on the floor when I am showering. If I fall over and can not get up, at least I can reach my phone and call for help.

One of my life-changing events was starting a family with my gay friends. I was not romanticly involved with them but we granted eachother to be parents this way. I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’m certain that I became a better person than I would have been as a mother in a traditional family, when I stayed single or became a single parent.

I find you even more pragmatic than I am. I think the important factor is you know yourself and feel in a place in life where you can be that which causes you happiness. I tried to put out Xmas decorations early one year in my subdivision, nothing too crazy but before Thanksgiving. I was recovering from a lot of cancer treatment and surgery and felt a real need for the lights and color. I was asked to turn the lights off, it was too soon, by HOA rules. So, I decorate inside only now whenever I want and no longer put out Xmas lights at all. I do have "solar" lights that are none holiday types that keep things from being dark.

Maybe this has already been said, but it bears repeating. 😊 as far as Tongs go for picking up things? I had hurt my back and never needed anything for picking up stuff before and my son had just moved out. So I’m in the kitchen alone putting clothes into the dryer, which is at the end of the kitchen. Back Hurts a lot . And I look up and realize my son had left his almost 2 foot barbecue tongs over the dryer. I had one of those epiphany moments and thought. I can’t even get to the car right now and I need to put these clothes in the dryer without bending too much. So I’m going to use the barbecue tongs. 😅 I needed something to pick up any clothes or whatever I might drop and I needed it in a 2 foot length. I use these for everything and my sons never getting them back. lol You can actually find them at Goodwill, especially in the fall when people are putting their barbecues away, etc.. anyway hope this is helpful. God bless you all. And thanks for all your helpful hints. They’re wonderful. I wish you the best. 🎉❤

Last December I gave away my toaster and toaster oven. Then I invested in a Ninja air fryer, oven combo. What a lifesaver it is! I live in a tiny apartment so one appliance on the counter is space saving. Best of all, it flips up, saves even more space! I’m always burning food in my stove, not good! The air fryer does a much better job. Makes great pizza!

Just what I needed am in my late 50’s now and feeling I don’t fit in with the world anymore, never really have but I love your video and comments here, they give me inspiration. Early morning is the best time of day, it’s magical and there seems less pressure at that time. I have my own clothing style which is a little too off the wall for my husband but I wear what makes me feel good. I’m happy to have guests as long as I’m not in the same room with them and I no longer worry about cleaning and tidying the house, they take me as they find me - if they can! Absolute no to the top sheet but toilet paper on the top 😅 Oh and guests have learnt to bring their own towels!

I love living alone, if the place is a mess, it's my mess. I can change my mind on a dime and not have anyone questioning me. I can do whatever I want whenever I want. I take care of myself and if that's seen as selfish, so be it. I also have the ability to say yes to helping others when asked because I don't take on more than I can comfortably handle. I could go on and on, but I think we are on the same page! ps my "sleep cycle" app plays birds for my alarm ;-)

I did a 33 day "repositioning" cruise on Princess: Ft. Lauderdale, Halifax, Iceland, England, Norway, Scotland, ending back in England. My travel friend was happy to read, all day, every day. Excursions were good, but the limited time in port was a problem for me. The ship left port at dinner time. Night life was on board with other Americans mostly couples. Fortunately we had a balcony where I could get away from the piped in music that ran 24/7 ( a short loop of 60's and 70's music, the average age must have been from that era.) By day 15, I swore if I heard "It's raining men" one more time, I'd dive overboard. I'm not sorry I went. The price was right for how much we did see. Bus tours are the other option if one is afraid to rent a car and navigate alone. It's hard to find a truly compatible travel partner to share driving and navigating but that's where I'm at!!

First observation, you travel light! I’m enjoying you vids on living solo. I am in marriage of 27 years with a moderately disabled man who refuses to live life outside of our home! After many years of idleness and resentments, I’ve made the decision to live my life happily, my way. Like you, I enjoy alone time but I yearn to do the things I said I would do if I had the time and money. Gratefully, I have a decent retirement income that will allow me to what makes me happy. Not fancy clothes, possessions, cars or dwellings. I want to go places, see the world first hand, not thru someone else’s lens. Thank you for your kind and calm demeanor. You are a woman of great wisdom❤.

It was interesting to hear you say you don't forgive your bully. There's so much rhetoric about "forgiving and moving on" but I don't agree with that sentiment. I also don't forgive my bullies (I had 4 or 5). They've never asked forgiveness and they did massive harm. I won't give them the gift of forgiveness.

I married a man who had lived alone for 45 years and still does 😅 so I have basically the same lifestyle you do. I also have a KZread channel and agree that editing videos is very time consuming. I usually put out 2 or 3 wildlife cameras that are motion sensitive. Bats, raccoons, mice, bears and even moths set off the cameras constantly so I end up with hours instead of minutes to edit. It takes an entire morning to just get a single 3 minute video.
