Hello From Hawaii

Hello From Hawaii

After growing up in Hawaii, moving away for college, and finally moving back to Hawaii, I wanted to start a blog and KZread channel about life in Hawaii. It's not all rainbows, beaches, and acai bowls. The beauty of Hawaii is also shadowed by some harsh realities that include a high cost of living, homelessness, and environmental issues. Through my videos, I hope to share some insight about Hawaii from someone who grew up here and who plans on living here for the rest of my life. So whether you're thinking about visiting Hawaii or moving here, I hope the topics I talk about are helpful and useful.

I was unaware that she was being bullied. Sad state of affairs it's too easy to damage people online. I appreciate her ❤ and bringing light to Lahaina. KZreadr creators share their lives, dreams and so much more with us. It never ceases to amaze me the level of negativity that is poured out in the comments. Thank you for the opportunity to just talk sorry with Aloha 🤙

If she didn’t take the position, how can she ever effect change? Some of the ugliest behavior I’ve seen in Hawaii is when people cross a picket line to get back to work. Even whole walking that line I’ve never held that against anyone because they had mouths to feed and eventually we all had to work together again.

Unfortunately there is no punishment for bully behavior. If there is, there will be a lot less bully behaviors not just in US, but around the world. 😞

My son was offered the supervisor position when his boss retired. My son refused because why take on more, 24/7, for a few thousand more per year? Really, no one remembers number two. Sad but true.

Unfortunately, social media has built a culture of no accountability. People can post whatever they want behind their phone or screen and get away with it. They have no sense of compassion or empathy, just thinking it's "OK" or "ITS JUST A JOKE". What they don't realize, it gives permission for others to do the same.

    - First off, you know that there's something wrong with a job that has NO classified documents/intel, and has employees sign Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). Being a military veteran of close to four decades, I understand the need for information control...although a pageant...really?! There maybe certain controls the public isn't aware of that is essential, although this seems to be more to be silencing them on their treatment...perception. And as people may be giving Ms. Gankiewicz heat for taking the position, as there is a NDA in place, even she doesn't truly know how bad the situation is. - Great timing: Having this happen in the Miss USA community is saddening, but it may be a small blessing for Maui. Savannah Gankiewicz is a Maui-native and can be yet another voice in bringing a positive focus to what's going on in the island as they try to recover from the effects of last year's wildfire. - Social Media: The prevalent dark side of social media are all of the negative comments people sling out there in order to drag down others to a miserable place...WHY?! Plainly said, that's just cruel. If someone wants to feel better about themselves, lift others up as you rise. Having others speak well of us is based on what we do for others, not how we step on each other to make ourselves feel good...that's a form of self-loathing. - Texting: Anything that's heartfelt should not be done on text...nuff said. - For those who are slamming Ms. Gankiewicz on accepting the crown, remember the statement, "If for any reason the new Miss Universe is unable to fulfill her duties, the first runner-up will take her place, good luck to you both"...this is life.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, what has happened to the Hawaii I grew up in? To attack this young lady who stepped up to fulfill the vacated position with bullying tactics is not the Hawaii style that makes here so unique that people worldwide envy us. I always feel we should be behind our local people as they strive to compete in anything, be it sports, acting, politics , whatever. THIS IS WHAT HAWAII IS ALL ABOUT. IMUA HAWAII, NO SCARD EM! ❤ L

Maybe people are upset very badly. Due to this is Kingdom of Hawaii. And not America. She should not be Miss America. Maybe they're upset about that. I can't wait when we're in the Olympics as the Kingdom of Hawaii. Also where I live there is illegals. Micronesians, Samoan and Vietnamese. They act like this is their country. And they're not nice people. I was raised in the kingdom of Hawaii since I was 12 years old. I came to Hawaii because of war as a child. These people do not act very nice to other people. And they get upset when we fight back. Why don't they just go back to their own countries and leave us alone here if they don't like us who are raised here. Also I married Hawaiian and I gave birth to Hawaiians. If you're not going to be nice to anybody that was raised here why are you here? We gave Aloha we'll be getting in turn nothing but headaches where I live with my Hawaiian. I think it's because they're receiving everything for free. These people are not working where I live. You think we're not going to say something back to you if you call us the b word.

We need a baseline reframe of what conflict means. Conflict for many is something to be avoided or is an opportunity for attack and hence reflex for defensiveness, whether elicited by cultural views or personal experiences. It took a long time for me to understand constructive conflict can be a positive experience and not one that triggers a fight/flight/flee/fawn response...there's gotta be a healthy detachment from the actual conflict. Conflict, when approached productively, and indeed non-personally, can lead to exploration, discovery, and conducive productive change. Granted, we're in institutions that allow for that offering of change to be safely spoken about...without threat of retaliation, stigma of whistleblowing, victim shaming, dismissive gaslighting cause of a culture of complicit pacification misunderstood as "being in aloha." Interpersonal Conflict. Joyce L. Hocker, William Wilmot. Huge textbook. Windward Community College Psy 253 course. Eye opening.

The irony of this is that the behaviour of people has made them look more typically American than if they had just politely discussed how they think this could be damaging to what they want to achieve.

Well two things. First, why some people are not supporting Savannah. The original Miss USA resigned because she felt like the Miss USA organization had not lived up to it's promises and that the workplace environment was toxic. So I think that by her accepting the position now, Savannah is seen as agreeing with the organization and its treatment of contestants. Even if that's not true, that's the optic. Second, why some people resort to online bullying. The answer to that one is easy: they are "keyboard warriors." It's easy to sit behind your monitor and spew whatever you want, ANONYMOUSLY. If we all somehow had to reveal our real identities (and maybe even pictures) before posting, I'm pretty sure the comments would not be so vile.

I wasn't familiar with his situation. I guess basically she took what would be a 2-3 month position and got bullied on line. Sorry to hear this, I would recommend that if she wasn't comfortable with her new role, I think she should quit. I wish her good luck!

She does not have a problem with her new role...the problem is she is receiving death threats because she said yes to the new role. Miss USA is a joke because they allow men who think they are women to enter the event.

I think the Mayor was asking the community to participate, not take over the role of policing. I brought it up before, how Moanalua HS had on its required reading list "The Hate U Give." Now that book portrays the police as one-dimensional villains. So yeah, it's not walking a beat with a billy club but means not demonizing law enforcement.

I think the Miss Hawaii situation is bigger than just her accepting the title under the given circumstances. Whether people agree or disagree with her actions, I don't know why some people have to resort to online bullying. People can disagree and still show respect and I think that's the bigger issue here. Looking forward to reading through the comments on this one 😅

Its ironic because both Miss and Teen USA resigned from their title due to bullying and other accusations like sexual harrassment and being silenced of their free speech. They both said that the organization is toxic and corrupt. Miss Hawaii knew full well what she was getting into as she said herself she gave it a lot of thought and still chose to do so. The harsh criticisms and even bullying comes with the territory in this very controversial situation. Its not about Miss Hawaii but the toxic environment of that organization. I would not want to represent and support an organization that is toxic.

My advice, this is for ppl want to start getting into job already without going in college, or just want a job, my advice don't stay in position u started like after 4 months minimum start moving around in company and just build up skills, like for me when i grad got job i stay in that job position for 1 year but didn't move within company. Then when i left Company and try look for different company on interview or just look on resume ya i stay 1 year of position i hired but doesn't give enough skill. So I'm just saying sometimes staying same position u got hired for is not enough when build resume or just looking into future.

I was bullied constantly at Laie elementary and a little at Kahuku high. It was the 90s so maybe it's different now but the teachers did nothing. In fact in 3rd grade I got in trouble (not the bullies) for knocking my desk over (no one was hurt) when I had lost it in anger emotionally from being bullied since first grade.

My mom is from waianae, and I lived over there for a little bit. What I think the mayor meant is what I'm seeing a lot in the comments, that it starts at home, and its their responsibility to keep their own in check. Which is important, don't get me wrong, but the problem is generational at this point. Something I've heard before from my own path from being homeless in chinatown rubbing elbows with people flying high on clear to working on fraud cases and rubbing elbows with ceos... You can't fix something broken, with something else thats broken. Sometimes sht gets so dark for people that all they can do is to reach out for help, and hope that someone will give a sht long enough to save them. And I feel as though thats what alot of people in waianae are trying to do right now, and it really pisses me off that the response they get is deal with it yourselves. They have been, for years. They need support, not fingerpointing and who to blame. And everyone wonders why they don't trust outsiders and police. The better question is, why should they? We all knew what goes on there for a long time, and all everyone does is make jokes about it while the government does nothing, or worse. Lets not forget what happened with those 4 cops in that chase, would you trust the police in your neighborhood if the last batch fked up some kids and tried to cover it up?

I like tease when they order the kaukau I ask em in proper kine English, “and would you like that with the rice or Mac salad??” They stay get one look of surprise like what ? And caught off guard you can see them think about the rice n Mac salad! Haha, den I joke with them and we laugh good!

DO: Make *calculated* sacrifices / work smart not hard Pay attention to your finances Think really hard about the things that matter Be grateful for what you have Develop a vision of your life 5 years from now / be kind to your future self DONT: Get complacent Confuse a hobby for a job Make your career your identity Waste time at work when you could spend it with loved ones

I have only visited the Hawaii islands 4 times, and I say "only" as it's the most amazing place I have ever been, the energy is so special, I would live there in a heartbeat, but being a Danish national that's not an option. All major cities in the world have traffic congestion twice a day, some even have it all day, every day. The cost of living might be higher than mainland US, but compared to northern Europe it's not half bad and most people can't afford to buy a home anywhere nice here as well unless they are upper middelclass.

We are coming to Hawaii again this year. We come every other year. This will be our last time. See you in the Caribbean. Blteing the hand that feeds you isn’t a good idea for Hawaii who seems to have a love hate relationship with tourists. You would think that post covid they would be begging people to come. Take tourism away from Hawaii would be a major blow to their economy. Locals need us. However, we need to be recognized as an asset. We tread lightly when we come to Hawaii. We recycle we don’t leave trash. But more than anything we spend lots of money. Do you want us or not? I’m always treated well by individuals but the government seems to want our money but at the same time not really sending out an Aloha to us. I say this with the utmost humility but like it or not Hawaii is a state in the union. I know that comes off as sounding entitled, but Hawaii could be a Japanese state. Would that be better? I know this comment isn’t perfect. But Hawaii needs to figure out something better than taxing people. I usually look back at what went wrong when these type of things go on. Where was the foresight?
