I think social media has given our youth an unrealistic expectation of “following their passion” to include they all want to be rich “influencers”. You hit it when you mentioned paying for possible hospitalization. Young healthy people don’t realize the value of good medical coverage. Civil service jobs in Hawaii aren’t glamorous nor particularly high paying but the medical, sick leave, and vacation packages blow away most private sector jobs.

Those benefits are huge, especially later in life. But I guess not a lot of people talk about that on social media 😅

Only affluent society says "pursue your passion." Most of the world is struggling to survive. The struggle is real and you need to look at what you need to do to be successful at survival and how to beat the "struggle." Your passion may just make you unable to beat the struggle.

Don't get comfortable in your job. Always seek better opportunities and don't be afraid to go to another company. Loyalty isn't as important as it used to be. Don't rush to pursue your passions. Find and learn to love yourself first. Once that happens, the rest will come.

Great point about not rushing to pursue your passions. It's hard not to rush to try the latest trends, but those trends fade away one day, which is a good test to see if you really love it.

Not sure if you (or anyone else here) are familiar with comedian Jimmy O. Yang. He is an immigrant from Hong Kong whose family moved to the US when he was little. Anyway, in one of his jokes, he tries to tell his father that he wants to pursue his dream which is to be come a comedian. His father replies (Jimmy uses a Chinese accent here), "NO! Pursue your dream is how you become homeless!" Jimmy replies that we're in America now! We do what we love! Dad replies, "NO! Everyone do what they HATE for money, then use money to do what they love!" It was funny, I laughed when I heard it, but at the same time, I kind of felt that it was really a true poignant statement, especially living in expensive Hawaii! I mean, you can LOVE to do certain things: art, music, surf, dance....but something has to pay the bills. You can paint all the wonderful portraits you want, but if no one buys your art, you're not eating! That old saying you mention where if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life is true, if you CAN find a job like that! But if not, you gotta pay the bills first!

I did see Jimmy's special. So funny. And yes, if you can find a job that intersects with your passion, that's wonderful. But I think most of us end up in a job/career that is okay and can pursue our passions on our own time.

My advise... "you don''t start at the top, so RESPECTABLY work your way up. Learn your job and be humble! Don't start a family unless you can afford to.

The days of "choosing your job" from high school are pretty much over. Most people work multiple jobs in widely different fields during their career. Train yourself for adaptability, pick up as many skills as you can, soak up as much knowledge as you can, stay aware of the greater picture around you and be prepared to shift before it becomes a survival-mode decision.

Chris. When i graduated from Castle High School in 1983 i had no idea what career to pursue nor was interested in higher education. I enlisted in our USN of August of 1983 and never looked back at Hawai'i as "home." I had a short stint from 2004 to 2009 where i returned to Da 'Aina. But after leaving again my passion for State of Hawai'i subsidized. You Chris returned home from Da Mainland for your own personal reasons, i applaud you sir. However, be honest to all Graduates...your future success and happiness in life just might be away from your home State of Hawai'i. Don't allow emotions to keep You Class of 2024 from achieving your best life here in Da 'Aina or abroad! Pursue a career and be Da Best at your employment! Anchors Aweigh!

Mahalo for the advice. I agree that for some, maybe many, the best thing is for them to pursue their careers elsewhere. And of course, they can always come back home and visit. 🤙

Going into the trades makes the most sense for most young people now a days.

Yes, very underrated path.

Many career opportunities are guided by family, community and friends. In Hawaii, making network connections is helpful along with education and experience. Federal, state and city is always recommended and private industries allows for creativity and promotions.

Your entire journey is ahead of you. Enjoy and thrill in your life. You're going to DO things. Really, really do all kinds of things you would have NEVER guessed you'd do.

While I'm not in a trade - my advise to young people who don't want to be doctors or lawyers and don't want to go to a University - is to go into a trade - especially in Hawaii. There is a massive shortage of people who can do plumbing, electric, HVAC, etc. Example - I just had a plumber out to replace a few faucets - $185 an hour.

The trades aren't talked about as much here, which is too bad. Great way to pick up good skills. We all need our stuff fixed.

People have to gravitate towards the main industries on the islands if they wish to stay. If those industries don't appeal to you, a move may have to be considered. So it becomes a huge talk with yourself about your priorities, both short and long term. As you say, interests change as you grow and get to know yourself.

Good, realistic advice. I want to reiterate some things. DO: Make *calculated* sacrifices / work smart not hard Pay attention to your finances Think really hard about the things that matter Be grateful for what you have Develop a vision of your life 5 years from now / be kind to your future self DONT: Get complacent Confuse a hobby for a job Make your career your identity Waste time at work when you could spend it with loved ones

Passsion can be such a misused word. I like the words purposeful/meaningful personally. My point is purposeful and meaningful things create joy and lead us into our calling. Also purposeful/meaningful things aren't always fun in certain moments but the joy comes from gaining understanding of why your doing what your doing(motive). I guess what I'm trying to say is there are many things that I've done that I really enjoyed but had no true purpose/meaning to me except simply pleasure. But as I've gotten older I've learned pleasure is fleeting and joy is lasting and a way of life that comes from finding purpose/ meaning in everything you do.

Great advice to travel and experience the world. Not just take pictures, but experience what life is like in other places to broaden one's perspectives.

Hi Chris, for sure they will need to find their passions. I would suggest that they have a long-term goal for their life. Of course, this could change over time, but making long-term goals gets you to make the short-term goals to be able to meet the long-term goals. Prioritizing these goals to meet the longer-term goal will eventually get them to what they want out of life.

Great advice on long-term goals. I'm not sure young people think in those terms. I'm not sure I did at that age, but I wish I did. Would have saved me a lot of time and money.

Many of the younger generation are obsessed with getting rich quick. That’s the lifestyle these influencers try to project when in reality nothing comes that easy. It takes a lot of hard work to make it big. It takes even more hard work to make it big quick. Those are the things they don’t realize until it’s too late and they have wasted their youth chasing an impossible dream. I had to make a choice in college to pursue my dream of playing pro baseball or pursue the reality of entering the work force. In the end I knew the percentages of making it to the pros were very low so I decided not to continue playing in college to concentrate on the education that eventually shape my career. While I might not be the millionaire I might have been as an all star ball player I make a very good living at a job that I love. Life choices need to be recognized early and that’s what we as parents need to teach our kids.

Mahalo for sharing. That must have been a tough decision to stop playing college baseball. Given the probability of making it as a professional athlete, it was probably a great choice. 🤙

My advice is study the job market where you want to live after college and if you want to live in Hawaii study tourism, agriculture, or law. My dumbass studied business administration just to land an $18/hr admin assistant. Funny how the description is “high school diploma or equivalent” not only that but I learned business strategies, MIS, Econ, just to scan and make copies at a firm… oh and please do internships at the time CUH did not really push that it was an elective.

Great advice. I think we, including myself, are so focused on just getting the degree that we forget that the goal is really to get a job.

Find a job that is a means to an end which is to pay for your passion.

My advice, this is for ppl want to start getting into job already without going in college, or just want a job, my advice don't stay in position u started like after 4 months minimum start moving around in company and just build up skills, like for me when i grad got job i stay in that job position for 1 year but didn't move within company. Then when i left Company and try look for different company on interview or just look on resume ya i stay 1 year of position i hired but doesn't give enough skill. So I'm just saying sometimes staying same position u got hired for is not enough when build resume or just looking into future.

I had no clue what to do with my life with the draft hanging over my head at the time. I tried UH but that wasn't really me, so after the service, my goal was not to live with my parents for the rest of my life, no matter what the job. I ended up working a job that paid the bills and then some. I really didn't love my job but it achieved my end goals. My son, on the other hand, knew what he wanted for a career when he was 9. He's on track to retire in about 5 years or less. Unfortunately, I really do feel sorry for the younger generation. JMHO, but it's going to be tough.

Its hard to find out what to do. I was good at grades. Took me 12 years to figure out what I wanted to do after high school. I consider myself lucky. I make more than most people. I also dont work more than 30 hours a week until my busy season where i work 7 days a week for 2 months. #Classof99

You are awesome, thank you for your advice. We have friends in Hawaii although we’ve never visited we are willing to move there for missionary purposes. And we have also considered the possibility of moving there to live there permanently because People seem like they are very good hearted there, But if is out of our budget is out of our budget. And we think moving elsewhere where living is less expensive than that makes lots of sense for us.

Getting too many best videos to determine which one is 'the' best. One thing about the stepping from teenager to 'adult', as Rodney Danger would say 'It's scary out there!". Depending on the person's personality and attitude, everybody takes that step differently. Some step meekly and test the water. to see if cold. Others jump headfirst in. Even without knowing if the rocks are there. Whichever way, it's just one step, the next one will be just like the previous one. We don't know that path/danger. That step is no different at 18, as it will be at 25, 35, 60. What has changed is the person that they were at 18, 25, 35.... At each point, we really don't know ourselves and how we will do as an adult. There are thought processes, we never gave much thought about, experiences we never tried, feelings we never experienced. We may surprise ourselves about doing things we didn't believe we could do or want to do. Every experience, success/failure, emotion, thought is a learning/teaching moment for us building that person inside all of us. We aren't superman or perfect, but we can 'try', make an effort just like previous generations/ancestors did. Modern generations as we evolve, modernize have gotten complacent about having a fallback option. Sometimes, our ancestors didn't have that luxury, they did have to try. Shakira has that song from Zootopia, "Try everything". We should at least try, putting our foot forward, even if its that job we hated, or that class subject that we hated. Push yourself, like it was that lay up in basketball or that tee off the course. No guts, no glory.

What great advice. I'd also add to not be afraid of failing if you try. No shame.

Find a job you will enjoy, but will make a decent living at. For example instead of being some artist that loves to draw that wont get paid, become a graphic designer or archetict. You like to argue and debate? Become an attorney, love music? Instead of being a musician become a sound engineer, etc. Learn finances so you dont go into massive debt. Out of a dollar save 50 cents. But at the same time dont be so "chang" because you never know when your time is and youre not taking all that money to the grave. But at the same time you cant live without some savings because you need it in emergencies. Travel while youre young. Because again you dont know when your time will come and you may not be mobile or healthy enough when youre retired. Stop buying Starbucks coffees everyday, makeup, expensive cars and silly clothes. Spend your money on experiences and memories instead of tangible things. Oh...and youre just a "number" to your employer. Take that sick day if your child is sick etc because you are replaceable to them. Your family and kids are not.

We took our two high school aged kids to Italy right after 911-(Sept 22) a trip they worked for with jobs It had a significant impact on them. The world is not a scary place - Hawaii is not the center of the universe - There are numerous ways to live ,there are old cultures to learn from- Hawaii is still a unique and special place

And finally, don't pigeon-hole yourself into a prison of a niche: diversify and evolve as easily as an animal in our ecology.

I made a reggae album and tried to ask the radio station to help me out and they said I need a fan base 😅. How will you get a fan base with no avenue 😅. Isn’t that how you get exposure. If your interest subscribe and see for yourself no help at all. I spent 20,000 dollars on my album and made back 0 dollars for my efforts. 😅

My son was a lead guitar player in a heavy metal band in college and after he graduated. He had the choice to pursue either his college degree or be a professional musician. I would encourage him to do whatever he chose. I told him, if he chooses music, the first thing you have to get is a good music industry lawyer, not a manager. There are lawyers who specialize in that field. He chose a career in his studies but still collects guitars and other things. Being a professional musician is going to be very challenging. I see so many good young musicians out there. Good luck!

I do private party’s all over the west side. I had an album release party at blue tropics. I played at Hawaiian Brian’s. I opened for Kapena at at board riders on the Kaneohe side. I did song swap with aunty from na le. I played my friend. You guys don’t come out to see us. That’s the problem. I took my album to every radio station and gave them a gift basket with my album. I asked them all the time when they’re going to do battle of the bands I can go on and on my friend.

I agree. There’s a lot more competition from the rest of the world. But we still have a big head start. It’s hustle right? For some reason I was looking up the book the most dangerous game on KZread and you came up with a book summary. I thought wow this guy hustles. We have a problem in this country and definitely in Hawaii. We think we are entitled to a steady income, a house, vacations, etc. That’s just how it was, doesn’t mean that’s how it’s going to be. The other 6 billion people out there were toiling to survive while we sipped coffee and tea. Now they’re taking our lunch and we’re wondering why. What I’m trying to say is this, pursue opportunity wherever it’s available even if it’s away from home.

God!!! 808…….there are tons of mediocre.no talent bums looking for the glory of baseball!!! Opportunities fly by……the dreamers are left to flounder!!!! Get your ticket in a trade, preferably metal trade, then after four yrs. of real life……you can still dream!!!!

Here…….a woman is yet to be born who can live with another one, young or old, sharing the same kitchen???? AND……the damned place BETTER HAVE MARBLE COUNTERTOPS!!!!!!!aloha

All graduating high school students need to continue their education in one form or another like a trade school or Jr. College. Just getting anykine job and starting a family is the most inane thing you can do ever. But then, some are born with an IQ no bigger then the number of their shoe size ... 🤔
