Ranking Every Major Hawaii News Station (and my favorite reporters)

Hawaii has three major news stations on TV: KHON, KITV, and KGMB. As someone who was born and raised here, I've been watching Hawaii news for a while and I wanted to share what I like (and don't like) about these news channels. News is being consumed differently these days, as more people get their news online rather than on TV. I also wanted to share who my favorite news reporters are on each channel. Lots of great local talent, but I wanted to highlight one talent on each channel that I enjoy.
Big mahalo to ‪@KHONNewsHawaii‬ , ‪@kitv‬ , and ‪@hawaiinews‬ for all of their hard work informing the public on what is going on in Hawaii and beyond. 🤙

If I had to rank the local news stations, it would be KITV, KHON, and KGMB. Not that any of them are bad, but if I had to pick just one channel, it would be KITV (even with all of the production errors 😆)

Bob Sevey, Bob Jones, Tim Tindall and Joe Moore on KGMB9 in the '70s, hands down! That team was the ultimate. Everyone else since that Channel 9 foursome has been unsuccessfully chasing them in terms of stage presence and journalistic integrity.

Bob Sevey was Hawaii's version of Walter Cronkite on KGMB. A legendary journalist whose integrity was beyond reproach. "Long Story Short" with Leslie Wilcox on PBS did a two-part series featuring Bob Sevey. It was an excellent interview and gave a very comprehensive chronology of the history of island TV news broadcasting back in the 1970s and 1980s. In fact, Leslie Wilcox was and alumni of KGMB News back when Bob Sevey steered the ship. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mr. Sevey. He was basically fired from the news desk because he did not agree with the direction television news was headed in terms of being less about the true pursuit of journalism and more it being sensationalized coverage of the news that lacked depth

Bob Sevey was the best from KGMB station. Chuck Leahey was the best sports broadcaster, especially with the former ROIA and the former ILH sports. His son did a fantastic job too.

Brah: Finally a topic I feel confidently qualified to comment on! As an Old-School (emphasis on the OLD!), media watcher, who grew up during the "glory years" of evening news casts (think Walter Cronkite, and Huntley/Brinkley) and possessing a Journalism degree, I was noddingy my head in agreement during your entire soliloquy about our local channels - right up until, you came to your wrap up. I watch each channel most every evening in succession, and here's my conclusions: I start my evenings with KITV, and most nights end up shaking my head regarding their production gaffes and less-than production values. I begin with KITV's 5 P.M. broadcast because I can count on them to hit the day's main stories and topics. But as for depending upon them for more in-depth information or investigative reporting - well, forget about it! At 6 P.M. I move on to channel 7, which, for my money, has the highest production values and is the "most mainlandish" of the three channels. As you mentioned (if I'm remembering right) you noted their deep bench of talent, which, I think, enables them to cover stories and topics the other channels just don't have the resources to cover So, finally, I catch KHON's 9 P.M. newscast (all of these, by the way, I record 'cause I hate watching commercials!), where I know, it seems, I can always count on getting the "local take" on what's going on, the most accurate insights and info on a particular story, and the most thorough reportage of that story. So, sorry, I'd have to rank KITV last. I only watch them because I can get a quick sampler of the day's stories on preparation of finding out more from the other two stations. As for Channel 7 and KHON, I'd rate them about equal, but for different reasons; when I want polished and professional, it's Channel 7, but when I want that local feel and community attachment, it's KHON all the way. A final thought about Joe Moore: When I first started watching locally I thought "you've got to be kidding," he is so over-the-top from the mainland stations I was used to, but then I settled down and began to celebrate him for his local uniqueness and the community attachment I also find at his station. So my final thought: if my T.V. only got one channel, I'd have to make it KHON - after all, I didn't come here to live a mainland life, I came to celebrate and immerse myself in all the islands have to offer! Thanks for the topic. I could talk story all day with you regarding anything media and broadcast related.

Mahalo for sharing. I wish I had time to watch that much evening news, but kind of hard with young kids. Instead, I mostly watch in the mornings. I'd say that most people enjoy KHON overall. They are an island favorite for a reason. But still, I'm glad we have variety in Hawaii for such a small market.

Great video! I think one of the most interesting dynamics that you don't tend to see that often on the mainland is anchors/reporters switching local stations. It's hard for me not to associate Jai Cunningham and Marisa Yamane with KHON2 even though they are now with KITV4. I am biased as KHON2 has always been my go to and have always been impressed that as a 'FOX' affiliate, that it hasn't strayed into that 'type' of news. Some of my favorites: Joe Moore--how many times has he 'almost' retired!? Olena Heu Kanoa Leahey when he was the main Sports Anchor for KHON2 and when he and John Veneri duoed the sports desk. When Justin Cruz and Kathy Muneno anchored the desk together. (they had one of the best working dynamics IMO). of course Joe Moore and last but not at all least, the sweet soul of Kirk Matthews (RIP).

Great topic! Why do we need weather 3 times in a 1/2 hour program? There are several reporters I cannot tolerate. Why do they have to over enunciate than rather than speak in a normal tone? Can I give my least favorites? Max Rodriguez, Kelly Simek, Chelsea Davis, Jennifer Robbins, Aalii Dukelow, and Jolani Martinez when she is on the desk. There is no need to yell at us in the studio! Because of all my dislikes, I tend to channel surf the news but KITV is the most palatable.

Love this topic! I watch HNN on my Roku because I like to hear the local accents and am impressed with the effort to correctly pronounce Hawaiian names. Lovely change since I lived there. I love Guy Hagi. I'll have to look for the other stations on line. News seems to be very superficial these days. God forbid anyone has an opinion or even a solution. I also have a problem when a very disturbing item is followed by light hearted banter that no one cares about. ???? It just fills up time with nothing. I do like the more relaxed feel but think it needs to be more appropriate. For me it seems like the first story just doesn't matter. I did grow up with Cronkite and other journalists who didn't just read off the prompter but offered real reporting. Joe Moore is still around?? I'm in my 80's and remember him from, well, long ago. LOL I have much more to say but....I'm old and 🤣

My favs: Hawaii News Now "This is Now" news for their online accessibility midday, KITV4's afternoon show "Island Life Live" authentic island kine pidgin laden showcase of local events (I agree KITV4 shows the most authentic presentation of the local zeitgeist for better or worse in the distracting lack of polish), and yes KHON2's mainstay professionalism, consistency, and reliability. My favorite station is Hawaii News Now because of their overall team of broadcasters, accessibility online, and the critical scrutiny of their hard hitting investigative reporters that provide a contrast to my own bias toward nostalgic rose colored vision. I also do wonder how the occurrence of having our current Mayor Blangiardi, with his previous careers in KGMB and KHON, have maybe allowed for a greater critical examination of issues within the news, particularly with Hawaii News Now. This was an interesting topic to further introspect on an aspect of local life that I didn't think about before! Bravo for the innovation and mahalo!

Great topic ...news have changed over the years both locally and nationally. It's the formula from ABC, CBS, and NBC that they follow. When they added more emphasis on weather, entertainment and sports, less time on facts. National News also include commentary and local news have Cheap eats restaurant promotions. Morning entertainment promotions and miscellaneous promotions are added to fill segments. Sometimes good to balance positive stories with the negative stories. There are now language segments with Hawaiian words, or promotions of new stores. Seems like many reporters are playing musical chairs and Bryce Moore will follow dad's footsteps. The paradigm shifts and everything changes on being number one.

Too many years of "sunny with a chance of mauka showers."🤣Ever since, that's made it hard for me to follow the weather very closely on the local news. I lived in Hawaii long enough to remember when Joe Moore was kind of "clownish" as a news anchor with Les Keiter as his foil. My how times have changed. He's now the "master" of Hawaii news, whereas Bob Sevey was the man back then. I still keep up with the local (Hawaii) news online with HNN (subscribed) and KHON and KITV as they come up on my suggested KZread videos. In fact, I follow them more closely than the local news here in RI. Just an FYI that might interest you. A lot of newscasters here in RI use the local stations out of Providence, RI as a stepping stone to the "big leagues." Some of the big ones you would be most likely to recognize are Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira (yeah, we get planny Potagees hea, too), and Dylan Dreyer, who made a really quick jump to the Today Show.

In the 90s KHON was the gold standard, especially because they pioneered the morning show. Now, they seem to be a mouthpiece for Nexstar media and their right wing political viewpoints, and you can tell when Joe Moore rewrites his promoter on the spot to color the news in a much more right wing way. And then nepobaby Bryce Moore is just awful at being a video journalist and I can’t believe he gets to do what does and be featured so prominently because he is related to Joe. Not great, Bob. KITV seems to be the cheapest production values, but, they are also quite responsive to digital questions and they do a good job of pushing local stories on Twitter. FYI KITV is also the station that uses the fewest amount of production staff and is the most reliant on automation. Basically they are cheap… HNN has become my favorite news station, mainly because over the pandemic they did a great job pushing their digital content on KZread and they added the afternoon news show which lines up well with mainland news cycles. Also Ashley Nagaoka is good at her job!

Mahalo for sharing. Hoping to see good things from KITV with their afternoon show. And HNN is still dominating the digital news space. Increcible effort with that team.

Partly sunny, partly cloudy. I was born in 1949 in Honolulu, and it's still the same? California local news stations are the same. Boring. Once, CBS had a segment called "What's Great About LA". It lasted about a year and failed.

Yes, still the same. "Windward and mauka showers expected in the morning. Winds 5-15 miles per hour" 😄

It sucks living in Hawaii. Good luck if you want a decent social life.

@@HelloFromHawaii it's worse than you think. We have to deal with people like you, and people like you are showing up on the continental USA.

Joe Moore looks like he was stuck there on Vacation since the 90s and now is forced to read the local news.
