Sharing My Love For Mom and Dad in Hawaii (before it's too late)

So I wanted to make a video sharing one special memory of my Mom and Dad and one thing I'll miss when they are gone. A recent health scare got me thinking about my parents lately and a video by Casey at ‪@vegetablepolice‬ reminded me that my parents won't be around forever. So if you're like me, my parents have been important pillars in my life over the years and I'm really thankful for them. So before they are gone, I wanted to share some things about them. Really for myself and also my kids and future kids.
Mahalo to Casey from Vegetable Police/Camera Conspiracies for reminding me that it's never too early to love on your parents.

When I was in the Military before cell phones I had an answering machine my Father used to leave messages on. He passed away from Cancer back in 1998 and I saved all those messages and still pull them out and listen to them today every now and then.

My father quit high school to work and help my grandparents. My mother worked as a waitress for 15 years before going back to night school to become a nurse. I think this is the reason I worked my S off to get my son a great head start in life. You can't take tomorrow for granted.

The greatest gift you can give to your parents NOW instead of later is to just be there for them. They brought you into this world, provided you with everything you have, and best of all, disciplined and raised you to be the man you have become today. How you raise your children is a reflection of them. I speak from experience, and I am always grateful that I got to take care of my mom, prior to her leaving us.

I think it's a mom thing lol I do the same thing for my kids. It's one of the best ways to show our children we love them. After all, as moms, we feed you from the moment you are conceived, then born. Your mom loves you very much. Also, my Dad passed 1 months before everything shut down. One thing that hasn't faded is my dad's voice. I still hear it, sometimes.

Hopefully my Son and Daughter have good memories of myself and their Mom and build a better life for them.

Such a nice tribute to honor your parents. It was tough losing my parents. Lost my dad first. I had so much respect for him. I felt so lonely when he left us. My mom died 3 years later but had dementia. It felt like I was slowly losing her due to her not remembering who I was over the final years. When her dementia got worse, I had a mom but it felt like I didn’t have one. I hope she knew that she meant the world to me. I miss them both dearly.

And I'm not sure if it's just an Asian mom thing or moms in general, but yeah, once she knows you like something, she's going to get it for you again, and in greater quantities! Some Asian vloggers make videos specifically on this topic, and commenters from other ethnicities cite the same thing! Pretty sure YOU and your wife will do the same thing, too!

Thank you for creating this video and sharing such intimate details about your life. One thing that struck me was losing the memory of someone's voice. My dad passed away nearly 30 years ago. My sister recently sent me some videos that she had taken at family gatherings when her children were young and he was alive. I was a startled when I didn't recognize my dad's voice. For all these years, I can see him in photos and in my head, but his voice was long gone. Your videos will be incredible mementos. I'm originally from Maui and have lived in Seattle for almost 40 years. I very much enjoy your videos and greatly appreciate your thoughtful perspectives. Thank you.

Good thing my sister and 2 of my brothers are near enough to help. I'm trying to get back more often, but I wish it could be more. My Dad really appreciates when I call him. Aloha! It is with deep appreciation that I heard the cherishing of your Mom and Dad. When my Dad died, I wrote and delivered his eulogy (he had just turned 90). My Mom (87) was very moved by it all. A couple of days later, she asked me if I were going to do that for her. I said yes. She said: “Can you do it now so that I can listen to you and know what it will feel like?” In that moment, it felt like I had been stabbed in the chest. I was not ready for my Mom to go. I said ‘yes’…. and no matter how many times I tried to write… I could not do it. The grief was unbearable…. And so, my Mom died never having heard what I had to say. Yes, I know she knew AND I could not validate what she needed. I ended up posting that eulogy on my blog so that it would ‘feel’ ever present and in the world. I wonder if she reads my blog… :) So, mahalo, Chris, for daring… and for the courage that it takes to embrace such finality in the ’now’ of the moment we’re in. I wish I had done that… and I know that I can only be the fullness of who I am, in the moment that I’m in. No regrets and, clearly, there will be none for you.
