Hawaii Perspectives: Rethinking My Own Opinions About Paradise

I noticed that on one of my recent videos about Hawaii that a lot of the comments were in agreement with what I was saying. And while that's encouraging as a content creator, I stepped back and reflected on how social media can sometimes group like-minded people in certain silos. In Hawaii, we sometimes experience island thinking or group thinking, which can sometimes be detrimental to how we do things here. I just wanted to let others know that it's okay if people don't agree with my opinions about Hawaii. I've never claimed to speak for all or a majority of locals. Instead, I'm much more interested in the discussion and discourse we can have about Hawaii. As long as the comments are respectful, I'm opening to disagreement. And again, this isn't targeted at any one comment that disagreed with me, but more about the overwhelming comments in agreement with me and just making sure to check myself.

I'm here because you are me; a dad, with two young kids married to a Japanese woman who likes to talk story. There is no better channel on the internet that gives a real life insight into the humanity that is the everyday person with a local, Hawaiian flavor. You've give me the real version of what it means to live, struggle and enjoy Hawaii.

Chris you’re doing a great job with bringing your own prospective about Hawaii and its people, culture and generally social living on an Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Hey man, it’s great getting the best of the worst of Hawaii. I’m from Hawaii, born and raised. Grew up in central Oahu, Wahiawa and graduated from “The Leilehua Mules. “Go Mules.” We miss Hawaii but as you know life moves on. People grow up and get older. Like us. Lucky you live in Hawaii. Because I don’t think I can live there anymore. Mahalo for your time and wish you all the best in Hawaii and your family. Stay Strong Braddah.

Chris, I'm probably going to get some kick-back for saying this, but I feel like part of the problem with not respecting others' ideas or feelings is a recent generational thing, starting with the advent of social media. I blame ALL of society's ills on social media...lol! It's the "Everyone gets a trophy!" generation where parents never say "no," and the kids always do a "good job!" We CAN'T hurt their self-esteem, can we? If only we can learn that we cannot always have everything 100% OUR way! I started coaching youth baseball in the early 2000's. After the first practice, the team mom asked me if we can collect $25 per family for trophies. I told her that we haven't even started the season, so we don't know if the team will win the division yet. She says, "Oh no, EVERY player will get one with his picture on it at the ends of the season." In my day (late 60's-early 70's), if you don't place in the top three, you get NOTHING, so you work HARDER next season! So back to my team. During the season, a kid strikes out on three pitches, wildly swinging at three bad throws. I hear from the stands, "THAT'S OKAY, _____, GOOD JOB! GET 'EM NEXT TIME!" Seriously? That's not how I coached them. That WASN'T a "GOOD JOB!" I reminded him, swing at pitches near your belt, over the plate! Next at-bat, same thing. But to mom, it was a "GOOD JOB!" And don't try to tell mom otherwise. I learned that the hard way! The long winded point is this. Children today are not being told the truth and therefore cannot handle it. They are never wrong (try telling a teenager s/he is WRONG about something), and whatever they do is ALWAYS a GOOD JOB! So, they grow up believing whatever they do or say is ALWAYS correct and good, and never learn to compromise or try to improve. When they post on social media, they cannot deal with negative comments. Increase in teen suicides? I wonder why? Isn't the whole idea to try to get as many LIKES as possible? I used to tell my students if you don't like the results, STOP POSTING stuff!

Bad because it's harder for KZread to recommend the videos because nothing else is out there that's similar. However, I still like talking about whatever I cover because it's interesting to me and hopefully helpful to others out there.

As a native Hawaiian who’s lived in the mainland and also supports the Hawaiian sovereignty movement I actually really enjoy your humbleness and open mindedness when you talk or think out loud…there’s a lot of people I seen on social media in Hawaii who think they know it all and are always right and those are the people who seem to have more followers and more influence than the people who are genuine and nice to everyone in person and online. I love watching your videos!

Mahalo for the comment. Social media is a very interesting platform that often gives certain types of people a bigger audience in the short-term. But I think as people grow up, things change and people's perspectives, hopefully, grow with them. I'm not too worried about social media influence, since this isn't my job. I do this because I want to share my thoughts about Hawaii. However, if I wanted to attract the most amount of views and followers, well, I'd just look at what works online and copy that. Thank you watching the videos 🤙

Chris, good video. Being open, receptive to ideas and listening is always a start. You have a bright future of a KZreadr, parent & spouse. Growing older, listening and experience will change opinions, thought processes through what you are doing, ideas may or may not change, we are always growing intellectually, emotionally, and physically (which is not always great for the health). Just keep learning & listening. Sometimes being on the opposite side of any subject teaches aspects of the discussion that might not be so obvious. I recently sat down with my old friend of 30+ years, listening to things said and it was interesting about the perspective 30+ years later, that they expressed opinions that they wouldn't have had. Age, interests, perspective paints a picture in all of us. If you ask your child to look down the road and describe what they see, is it the same as what, Chris, the dad sees? In 30 years from now, ask the son the same question on the same spot and listen & compare then and now.

I've learned that time and living on my own has changed me over the years. It has forced me to grow up and really think about why I believe the things that I do. If I'm swayed by popular opinion just because it's popular, I'm not really standing on my own. And when I get questioned, I'm more likely to sway because I don't know why I believe what I believe.

Over time, we experiment the order of putting in the pot, we try adding more time. We keep trying, making success/oops and such until, we get something, we find it okay. A psychiatrist once told me that we cannot change other people's minds, as they are a product of their upbringing and past experiences. All we can do is focus on how we react to things as they happen around us. I found that people struggle to open their mind to other possibilities/ideas, because of so many reasons. Although I learned a long time ago that if we break the shackles that tie us to a belief, then we may be more open to listen to other's ideas/reasoning. If a person feels that they know everything, their attitude has cluttered their mind so that they cannot receive new information. Being open without preconceptions, that's how growth begins. And until we're unable to do so, we should continue to learn and expand...as individuals, we'd be better off.

Former Hawaii resident here. My impression of why private schools in Hawaii are favored over public schools is that it seems to be more prestigious to attend private schools in Hawaii (e.g., Punahou, Iolani and Kamehameha schools) and also the fact that because of financial constraints (state education budgets), public schools do not have the same resources available to contribute to a child's education that the private schools often have There is also the issue of safety, but I think that can also be related to financial resources constraints.

For Kamehameha school, you have to not only have good academics but have the right racial composition - one that gives you huge advantages anyway, but given the academics to get into and grad from "Kam", plus being of the "most equal" racial makeup, you've got it made for life. Punahou is the same, but for White/Asian people. Good academics but the main thing is you have to have parents who can buy you in. You can be just as smart and without money, Punahou is not for you. The thing with Punahou is that if you went to Punahou, you went with a lot of other people who also went to Punahou, so you've got an old boys'/old gals' network and again, you're made for life. Source: In my family my father just barely managed to get up the money to send the oldest one of us to Punahou. The other four of us, ranging from pretty smart to arguably smarter than the oldest, had to go to public schools and no one really cared if we even actually graduated. 2 of us did, 2 GED'd out. BTW in "Western" culture this is called "Primogeniture" which is a fancy word that means the oldest child gets *everything* and the younger siblings are cut off to sink or swim. This is how you get Vikings, 1000+ years ago. The oldest kid got the land, the younger ones had no way to get land or anything other than going out on these robbing missions, that's how the Viking thing worked. Bringing things back up to the present, no, we younger 4 didn't go out robbing. We did things like join the military, work low-level jobs, and just survive. And when our parents got old and could have used some help, none of us were able to help them - that's the "Western" way of doing things, everyone's pretty much on their own. I much, much prefer the Asian way where the parents do their best for all the kids, helping those with talents to develop those talents, and in turn the kids help the parents when they're old. In Hawaii you'll see a lot of Asian parents busting their asses to give all their kids a chance and it's beautiful.

I have not lived in Hawaii for a long time. When I do visit, lot of discussions among family's parents and grandparents is what private schools the kids go to. Would not be surprised that it is one of the highest percentages in the nation. The private schools siphon off the top academic and athletic kids on the islands. With that I'm sure behavior in general much better also. I bet that many of these local kids go to top mainland school and don't return to live on Islands. I'm sure thats common knowledge among locals, but sad.

As I got older I found out that it's not everyone's thing. I think people's taste buds are sometimes different. Also, when I was young I used to love McDonald's. Like to me it was gourmet. @@HelloFromHawaii I appreciate your point of views on a lot of the topics living in Hawaii. I'm in the process of buying a piece of land on Big Island and planning to build a small house. I visited all the islands already and I like the slow pace of living. I'm not 100% certain I will not get frustrated with island time, but will try. Does it take more than 2 months to close in Hawaii??

Food is subjective but very unifying at the same time. We all have different tastes but judgement can only be made by trying things for ourselves. Unless you try...hard to criticize. Life lesson...

I highly suggest not reviewing food in Alaska 😂 we always enjoy it, whether it’s from a restaurant, food truck, or even the mall - we love the food in Hawai’i. So much more flavor than here. As it is in Hawai’i - food costs so much here - and people tend to make their food bland here. We tend to be in awe of how cheap Hawai’an food is. We (wifey and I) have traveled to Oahu several times. Your channel grounds us whenever we want to sell everything and move there. Your channel tends to downplay how glorious Hawai’i is, at least compared to Alaska. As an Alaskan Native, we love the culture there. We love the people - the true people of the island. The food - and as it snowed over 10’ (literally) this year alone - we love the warmth. The more we travel to the island, the more we see why (most) locals dislike certain tourists. There seem to be more and more people who see Hawai’i as a Disneyland destination, and it’s a shame. Sorry for the ramble. I love your channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and insights into what locals are experiencing and thinking.

For private school, as a parent, I don't like how the public school system is ran. I think it can definitely do better. However, I don't know how private school is ran, only that kids do better in private school.

Private school means the parents have money. Money equates to regular doctor check-ups, kid gets glasses if he/she needs them, gets enough food to eat and probably better food, kid is likely not bullied for "being smart", the school books in the school don't have pornographic cartoons scribbled into them, hell the kid probably even has a good breakfast every day before school. Of course kids with these advantages will do better.

I'm here because I live in NM, but have lived in CO. I love living in NM. To me it's Hawaii with a low cost of living, but no Aloha spirit unless I meet other Hawaiians. I recently went to The Green Concert, it was a little short. In April, I will see Common Kings at the Gathering of Nations. I enjoy your videos, but you focus a lot on Japanese and Japan. We're different ethnicities, but I seek out the common interests and experiences. My life experiences are different than yours, but I respect your opinion. I cannot live in Hawaii, I like the free shipping and I don't believe in Hawaii government, politics, and cost of living.

Hawaii is a great place. I know the financial struggles are tough at times, but there are still a lot of intangibles that make living here great, especially family.
