OverviewBible

OverviewBible

The Bible is a huge book, and one of the most important publications in human history (whether you're a Christian or not).

However, everyone has an opinion about it, and those opinions are usually very, very strong ones. It can make it difficult to explore the Bible for yourself-even if you were raised religious.

OverviewBible is a project Jeffrey Kranz (that's me!) started to help people get a feel for what the Bible is and what it's about. You can learn more (and explore a TON of resources I've created) at OverviewBible.com. =)

    I got great insight from this video. Please correct me if I'm wrong. "Jesus risen from the dead" is the core fact/believe that breaks the bible's circular reasoning?. I also have a legit question that I have issues wrapping my head around. He said Jesus followers being murder is a "good indication" they were telling the truth? Please help me understand that premise. Thanks.

  • @OverviewBible
    @OverviewBible14 күн бұрын

    I'm glad this is helpful! To clarify, I do believe that a lot of people's reasoning when it comes to what they believe about the Bible is indeed circular. However, Christianity as a faith tradition predates the Bible, so it wasn't always this way. Earlier on, people shared a message with other people, and the recipients deemed the messengers trustworthy (for a variety of reasons). Re: martyrdom, it's more of a "good indication" that they *thought* they were telling the truth than actual evidence of a resurrection. The idea that several adults would dedicate and sacrifice their lives (without any real material gain) for something they knew was a lie is a little too ridiculous for many to accept. ;-)

    Jewish readers would also have noticed that there were three names/generations that Matthew omitted; I was hoping to see something about that.

    You're right! I probably could have made that a bit more explicit in my treatment of the generation count-maybe someday I'll do a video on the "lost kings" of Matthew's genealogy.

    . The Bible has to be read slowly to be understood and analyzed intelligently. For example, Leviticus starts with animal sacrifices… Your intelligence should tell you this is a very primitive tradition. All this blood spread around the altar to atone for sins, the priest eating some meat in holy places… Do this today to atone for your sins, and you will be laughed at….

    Jews are not supposed to "love" God, but to respect God. That guy must be Christian. The Jews wrote the bible. it cannot be explained through a Christian filter. It's as if Jews were explaining the gospels or the Quran....

    Enjoyed Bible Overview... I would like to see an overview of the Apocrypha and why these books were chosen to be in the original Canon.. New Subscriber

  • @OverviewBible
    @OverviewBible19 күн бұрын

    That deserves a video unto itself, but I can give you a brief explanation here. The Apocrypha (or, more respectfully, "Deuterocanon") usually references documents that were considered sacred in Judaism and Christianity, but were not included in the Masoretic Text (the authoritative Jewish canon established by the 900s C.E.). When the Protestant Reformation began 600 years later, Martin Luther moved these non-canonical (according to Judaism) books to the end of the Old Testament, and eventually the books were phased out of printed Protestant Bibles.

    I am very grateful for your explanation because moslems claims that Jesus was a Jew therefore you Christians are outsiders can be challenged. A harlots who believed is also in the genealogy. Grace and pardon in the genealogy. God is inclusive. Ruth the Moabìte birthed our Patriach Obed.

    I wouldn't recommend this approach, as it would have you throw away the human teaching in John 1:1-18 which identifies Jesus as the Word of God. ;-)

    I started studying the Bible just about five years ago (~2019). Your channel was one of the most instrumental in helping me to quickly absorb the concepts and vital messages of Scripture, especially because I have chosen to use the KJV version which has antiquated language but I have a sense that it may preserve more of the truth then the more updated versions, just by virtue of Translation. I struggled with Genesis and the other books of the Old Testament until I encountered your channel. Thank you for putting these works together. It is wonderful to return at any time and be able to run your concise presentations to help me with my continuing studies. You are a blessing!
