The Gospel of John: Overview | Whiteboard Bible Study

The gospel of John is the fourth book of the New Testament, and the last gospel in the Bible. This video looks at the story and structure of this artistic, compelling narrative about Jesus.
Learn more about the Gospel of John (and see the whiteboard outline) here: overviewbible.com/john/
A quick note on "the Jews" in this video. I think it's important to note three things that didn't make it into the video:
1) The gospel of John sometimes refers to "the Jews" in a rather sweeping way, but there were many Jews who believed in Jesus at this point in the story (John 12:9-11). Still, John draws a distinction for the reader when it comes to this part of the narrative: "Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples." (John 11:54)
2) Passages that speak of the Jews rejecting and killing Jesus have been used to justify violence, injustice, hate, and prejudice against Jewish people for centuries. This is obviously wrong, and contrary to the teachings of Christ.
3) As if he could see this coming, the author of John overtly states at this point in the story that Jesus will "die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one." (John 11:51-52) While there's a distinction in the narrative here, the author himself seems to agree with the Apostle Paul that by the end of the story, "there is neither Jew nor Gentile […] for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)

At 42, I'll turned to god five weeks ago. I read some of genesis and never picked the Bible back up. I've been listening to derek prince videos. He's good at giving instructions, I've been repenting, surrendering and receiving. I woke up one morning and ecclesiastes was burning in my brain. So I read it, as I was finishing, I said to myself what am I suppose to read after this? Apostle John popped straight into my head. I love the overviews before I read the section

@@endofscene Each book in the New Testament conveys exactly what God wanted them to. In every aspect of Bible authorship, sometimes God spoke directly to the author, who simply recorded what they heard. At other times the author conducted much of his writings on interviews and research. At times they were eyewitnesses. Sometimes the Holy Spirit brought to mind the things Jesus taught. Regardless of the ways the words came to the authors, the words they put down were an extension of them, their personalities, skills, backgrounds and training. But they were the exact words God wanted them to write, because they are His words. Matthew writes his gospel to demonstrate Jesus is the Messiah. Peter passed his recounting to his attendant John Mark. In Mark the theme of this Gospel is to present and defend Jesus' universal call to discipleship. Luke writes his Gospel to highlight it is for all since Jesus is the promised one of God as prophesied in the OT and as seen in God's activity in Christ's life, death and resurrection. John - Jesus is the Son of God, all who believe have eternal life. John relies in his writing, the 7 miracles and I Am statements by Jesus, witnesses to Jesus, John the Baptist, and Jesus himself. Acts, written by Luke, is to give an early account of the church. The main theme is that the Holy Spirit empowers believers to declare the gospel among everyone. Paul writes the letters to the Roman's and its message that in the cross of Christ, God judges sin and at the same time, shows His saving mercy. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians encourages the church to overcome differences to advance the gospel. His second letter is about his suffering and the power of the Spirit in his apostolic life, ministry and message. His letter to the Galatians states that Christ's death has brought the age of the new covenant. Letter to the Ephesians covers Christ's reconciliation of all creation to himself and to God. Christ has united all people to himself and to one another in His church. Christian's must live as new people. In Philippians Paul writes to tell them to live as citizens of a heavenly city and to grow in their commitment to serve God. His letter to the Colossians the theme is about Jesus being Lord of all creation, including the invisible realm. In Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians the main theme is about Jesus Second Coming and the events that will take place. Those who believe will join him those who do not will experience God's Wrath. In his second letter to the Thessalonians it speaks on Jesus return will be preceded by an apostasy and appearance of the Antichrist. In the first letter to Timothy the themes are that the gospel leads to practical, visible change in Believers lives. In the second letter to Timothy, Paul gives Timothy a boiled clear call the continue the gospel despite suffering. In his letter to Titus Paul discusses the unbreakable link between faith and practice, belief and behavior. And his letter of Philemon it is about the power of the Gospel to transform individual lives and human relationships. In the letter to the Hebrews the theme is Jesus is greater than any Angel, priest, or old Covenant practice and Christians must not forsake the great salvation that Jesus brought about. The Book of James was written of course by Jesus's own brother, James. James tells Christians they must live out their faith and that they should be doors of God's words not just people that listen to God's word. In Peter's first letter he tells those that preserving Faith while suffering persecution should be full of Hope. In his second letter the theme is about God's grace and Christ truly transformed and empowers Christian to live righteously despite opposition to do so. This is his final letter to the churches and it reminds them by God's grace they should live in a way that is pleasing to God. In the first and second letters of John, he calls us back to the three basics of Christian life, true Doctrine, obedient living, and faithful devotion. In Jude's letter the theme is how The Church Must defend one true faith Believers must be faithful to The End by resisting false teachers and following the truth. The Book of Revelation written by John, unveils the Unseen spiritual war in which the church is engaged colon the cosmic conflict between God and His Christ on the one hand and Satan and his evil allies, both demonic and human, on the other side. It also tells the readers that Christ already triumphed through his sacrifice on the cross and further encourages us to avoid the pitfalls of this fallen world.

"At times they were eyewitnesses." Reference/s? "John relies in his writing, the 7 miracles and I Am statements by Jesus, witnesses to Jesus, John the Baptist, and Jesus himself." Hm? Again, I note that the Synoptic authors don't mention the raising of Lazarus (after 4 days of being dead, no less). I suppose they just forgot about that one! And, again, the Synoptic authors don't mention any of Jesus' "I am" statements. I suppose they forgot about those too! :)

Jesus replied, 'If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.' This is the disciple who wrote these things." John 21

I am the door to the ineffable depths. I am the way to the transcendent realms. I am the narrow gate to the immortal root. "The father's sheep hear his voice, and they follow him. The father and I are one." Gospel of John 10 "You to whom the word of God comes, you are gods, you are sons of God." Gospel of John 10:34-36 Psalm 82:6

God robbed HIMSELF in flesh so HUMANS can become His children. His blood was shed for ALL NATIONS not just JEWS. DNA from The heavenly Father through His son the MAN JESUS. The angle told Joseph, "conceived of The Holy Ghost". It takes the right DNA to PROVE WHO IS YOUR FATHER! Jesus is The Holy One of Israel! His gift, His blood to humans.

Wow, I've learned more about the bible from this video than I ever have in 30 yrs lol. I struggle to believe that miracles could be performed.

I have the same struggle, Mia-the ancients would have had similar skepticism on that front. It seems the apostle's willingness to die as martyrs (without riches or worldly power) won enough people over for the story of Jesus' miracles to "stick" for so long.

@@OverviewBible Thanks. Yeah, I don't think I'll ever believe miracles happened physically as they're told, but I do think miracles happen in other ways. I have started reading John in the Bible itself, with a Christian helping me study it, and it is really beautifully written and poetic like you say. I think regardless of whether these miracles are true or not, there is a lot that reading the Bible can do for my wellbeing. I want my expand and grow my spirituality, and feel closer to God, and I think this will really help. I'm so excited to finally explore this withouot anyone (my Muslim father) telling me it's wrong. :)
