The Tanakh: the Old Testament Books of Jesus' Time

When Jesus, Peter, and Paul talk about the "Scriptures" in the New Testament, they were referring to the books we have in the Old Testament. But those books were arranged in a different (and more artful) way! Let's get a high-level look at the Old Testament of Jesus' time, and see what we can learn from how those books were arranged.

  • @OverviewBible

"Bizarre" isn't an assessment of how comprehendible something is. No matter how easy it is to map the "big little horn" of Daniel 8 to real-world figures, it doesn't make the image of a single-horned goat growing four horns (growing in each direction of the compass), with one horn growing it's own horn, which grows South, East, and Jerusalem-ward, then starts trampling the stars of heaven any less bizarre.

Whoosh. Good question. These books have been grouped by "genre" for a while. The chronological order (putting Ruth between Judges and Samuel, and Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther directly after Kings likely makes it easier for modern non-Jewish readers to grasp the general timeline of the Old Testament. • @LAMarshall

The "kh/ch" sound is a guttural throaty sound like in the German word "Bach". In Hebrew all letter Ks are pronounced like this when they don't begin a word. Hence, KeTuViM = Ketuvim, but TaNaK = TanaKH. There is no H letter used in the original Hebrew spelling, it's part of the transliteration to show the shift in pronunciation. This sound doesn't exist in English, so people pronounce it as a regular K. The CH sound in English "church" doesn't exist in Hebrew at all. You should never pronounce any "ch" in transliterated Hebrew like you would in English.

How do we know what the Jews of the first century meant by words and terms like "scriptures/writings", "word of God", "the law and the prophets"? What hard evidence do we have? And if we do have any, how widespread and authoritative would that have been? Did they really have the same kind of understanding about these terms that we do? Or even as, say, fourth century Jews and Christians did? I seriously doubt it. When and which "books" did they consider to be authoritative, inspired by God, God's revealed word, "inerrant", and/or "canonical"? The "Tanak" is a term that first appeared only a few hundred years ago, and didn't gain traction until recent times, mostly so that Jews wouldn't have to speak about "the Old Testament" (a Christian term) or even the Hebrew "BIBLE" (also a Christian term). As for the oldest known complete version of the Jewish scriptures, it is, ironically, not in Hebrew but in Greek: the Septuagint, which has "extra" books, which seem to have been dropped in the second century, at least partly because the early Christians considered them authoritative scripture. There is even evidence in the NT that these "deuterocanonical/apocryphal" books were known to the NT writers and were used like any other "scriptures".

As far as I know, the "(holy) Scriptures" were "the Law and the Prophets", Torah and Nebyym. The books that make up the part that was later called Ketubym had not yet been "canonized". Greetings

All Jews recognize Jesus existed, they just don’t believe he was the son of God. Which is exactly why he was crucified at the time. Many Jews at the time didn’t either, but many did. Jesus was Jewish and his apostles were Jewish. Paul was a Jew himself who converted. Hope that helps!

@@jennapecor1865 Actually jews don't believe in a lot more than just that he was the son of God. Many christians don't believe that either. They also don't all recognize that jesus existed. Jews actually have no idea if he existed or not. Nor do they care. He means absolutely nothing to them and if he did exist, it would be totally irrelevant since they don't believe he was anything more than a false messiah. He ends off the video saying how amazing it is that all the scriptures show how jesus fulfilled them. However, he never showed how jesus fulfilled anything. So not exactly sure what he's talking about.

@@jenex5608 yes, there were a lot of Jews who believed in Jesus. They were the Apostles and the first church back then was composed of believers that were Jew converts and non Jews like the Greek and such. The “Twelve” were all Jews. So yes, Christianity’s roots are Jewish. And most importantly, Jesus was Jewish. But He challenged the way the Jews were practicing their “religion”.

Its good to guide people and show them the right path but if people follow you then you have their responsibility on you. But how you ignore a book or a prophet whose message tell us everything which happened form Adam till Jessie. His name is Muhammad and the book is Quran. Why not you do your research on it so you have complete information to give to people. Jewish people not accept Jessie, but the truth is when Jessie come the prophecy of Muzis revoked and when prophet Muhammad comes the teaching of Jessie revoked and same thing is Christian doing and Muslims believe that Jessie will come in near future so first look whole picture don't leave a part of it. So my humble request to everyone please read Quran and message of Muhammad don't give excuse the day of judgement that God we haven't read Quran so i convey you the message to read by your self please.

This is just not true. The Jews didn’t have a universally accepted canon of scripture till the councils of Jamnia, which was well after the time of Jesus. Pretty much all Jews universally accepted the Torah. However, what was included in the Prophets was quite divided amongst differing Jewish sects and groups, and many included the book of Enoch and likewise texts. The canon you explore was more consistent in the councils of Jamnia, which was in response to the Christians who already had a council of specific books to be included in the Bible, under Pope Damasus, from Genesis to Revelation. This gave Christians a universally accepted canon of scripture. The councils of Jamnia also banned Christians from synagogue worship, so you’re trusting in an anti-Christian council that was set against those who believed Yeshua to be the Mashiach.

Let me preface what I am about to say by stating up front that I am not a scholar. I have been a secular Jew all my life until I began studying the Tanakh. So here goes. There is nothing in the Tanakh that would support the prophecy of Jesus. Nothing! Christians distorted passages in the Tanakh when they wrote what they call the Old Testament. Why did Christians do that if Jesus was real. Jews will never understand that and Christians should be asking themselves the same question. We cannot accept Jesus as a human manifestation of GOD as GOD forbid human sacrifice and therefore Jesus could not have died for our sins. Also, "put no other beside me", that's the 1st of the commandments that GOD gave to Moses. Yet Christians pray to Jesus and not to GOD. I am sorry if this offends anyone but the truth must be told as GOD declared the people of the book to be his voice and there is only one true GOD and that is the GOD of Israel as written in the Tanakh and not an intentional misrepresentation like the Old Testament. If you really seek GOD then you must forgo all other books and read and study the Tanakh. GOD loves you all. You are all his children.

These claims would be a lot more compelling with evidence. For example: - Which Tanakh passages, specifically, were distorted by Christians? - What is this "prophecy of Jesus" you speak of? - When was the Old Testament written by Christians? (I'll accept that Christian printers arrange the books in ways that are different from the Tanakh-hence this video-but the claim that the Old Testament is a single Christian work needs evidence.) - "God declared the people of the book to be his voice" … corroborating evidence would be really helpful if you're going to make this claim. - "Christians pray to Jesus and not to God." First of all, this is simply false-especially given that even the New Testament favors prayer directed to YHWH. Second, equating divine allegiance to prayer is a rather grave reduction. - "If you really seek GOD then you must forgo all other books and read and study the Tanakh." This undercuts centuries of Israelite worship that predate the Tanakh, and it introduces the troublesome problem of God's ways being exclusively available to literate people. As Moses says, "the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it."

Jews today still use the Tanakh and it's kind of cultural appropriation to use the same books in a slightly different order and come up with a new religion that had these scriptures as the basis and rename it the Old Testament. No, it already has a name. The Mormons didn't rename the bible, the Muslims didn't rename the New Testament or the Bible.... so why are you renaming our text. You should still call it the Tanakh.

  • @OverviewBible

Christian parties have enacted a lot of hate (and cultural appropriation) against the Jews through the ages, and that's wrong. You'll find plenty of examples of disrespect for Jewish tradition in the history of Christianity-but I don't think citing this as an example furthers your rhetorical goals. "You should still call it the Tanakh." Unfortunately, you may have made some historically inaccurate assumptions in reaching this conclusion. A few things to consider: 1) The term "Tanakh" wasn't its name when Christianity began. That term wasn't recorded until medieval times-it was called "Mikra"/"Miqra" beforehand. Tanakh isn't the original name, and it didn't become a common term for the Hebrew Bible until well after Christianity started. 2) The reordering of books happened before Christianity, too. The Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek around the third and second centuries BCE. This translation was called the Septuagint, and the books were arranged differently from the Tanakh. Hundreds of years later, Greek-speaking Christians made heavy use of the Septuagint, and Christians have (roughly) used the Septuagint arrangement of books ever since. 3) There's no "renaming" effort at play here by Christians. In fact, you can trace the names Christians use in several languages for the books of the Tanakh back to the names that were used in the Septuagint (which, again, predates Christianity by more than a century). Hopefully this is helpful!

Garbage. Jesus isn't in the Tanakh, but you stop every eighth of second to reference him. Huge disservice to Moses, Abraham, Issac, Jacob, etc. Wait until you find out Jesus is an idol, and who you've really been worshipping.
