As soon as I saw this video, I screen shot the recipe immediately!! I made this for my niece and I , and we both LOVE this recipe!! It’s so well-rounded, and has a “cooked all day” flavor without the wait!! And I discovered a new seasoning I use in other dishes now : Deggi Mirch!!!

I’m a cape coloured saffa from Belhar and yes, you are right Babotie .. and don’t know who these people are telling you otherwise. Born in Ct, lived in Athlone, Belhar and then Observatory close to Mowbray. My mum and ouma used to make this it’s absolutely delicious.. not sure about the National dish but it’s definitely up there! Well done..

Great job, but try it a second time. Use half as much dough for one bara (yours was too thick). Don't use a rolling pin. Stretch it by hand, using oil on your hands. Stretch it until it's almost transparent. Flash fry the bara for 2-3 seconds. Yes, I'm not exaggerating. Only 2-3 seconds . I personally messed up the first time I did it and fried for 5-10. Resist the urge to fry for more than 3 seconds. You put it in, sneeze, flip it once and then take it out. Next, wrap up all your bara in a cloth and leave it steaming in the cloth. You can put a heavy book on top the cloth. After about 30 minutes steaming in the cloth, under the weight, the bara will be perfect. Try it 😊.

I gagged so hard when I had that in my soup in Hoi An, I thought it was a big leaf of holy basil - needless to say, I had trust issues the whole trip & scrutinised each green. It was the most pungent offensive thing I’ve eaten ever 😂😂
