Insufficient training by the hire companies. Too high expectations on the part of hirers with their planned routes.

This is everything that's wrong with our canal networks in the Uk. CRT expect us, who live on our boats, to pay 25% more, for the damage these cause.

On recent canal holidays I was shouted at twice to slow down when in tick over. Unfortunately some live aboards just look down on hirers. I wouldn’t have sped up like that though, just smiled and said good morning.

To be fair, it was dark, the weather was poor and the canal was particularly busy at the time.

The rewind replay rewind replay was not done for entertainment, it was done so Phil could easily locate it next morning. I think these cameras are going to pay for themselves in ways you didn't expect Phil.

There is a maximum speed a canal boat can travel . You think you are going faster with maximum power you are not also fast moving water causes low pressure like an aeroplane wing and pulls the back of the boat towards the bank even more power makes it worse canal boating for 62 years.

Hire boaters get a lot of stick. Yet as a hirer myself I have seen worse from boat owners not only with driving skills but with locks - raming gates dropping paddles and not returning to reset the gates and paddles. Yes we pay a lot of money to hire and we dont inted to spoil it for others.

Thats the same thing that happened on Souis Canal going too fast causes low pressure on one side. Works like an aeroplane wing.

Although the canoeist chose to stop in a narrow section of canal (a potentially silly and unsafe act), it ultimately remains incumbent on the narrowboat to both maintain vigilance and if necessary, stop until the canoe has moved. Neither appeared to demonstrate sufficient competence to use the canal.

minimal wake and at human walking speed, the notion that they should be passed at 0.5mph (0.73ft/sec) is head up arse thinking, as it would take 95seconds to pass a 70ft boat, in reality there is no set speed per se, as its dependent on the boat and the relative wake it produces more than anything, which can be depended on length, the depth of water it draws, the shape and proportional length of the taper under water, the size of propeller, gearbox type, the size of engine, and even the width and depth of water available, some boats produce lots of wake even at low speeds, others very little even at higher speeds, due to a good combination of factors.

A few years ago, I was fishing on the Shroppie near Brewood. A commercial narrowboat passed me far in excess of the speed limit. I shouted that he had lost his water-skier and he gave me the finger. When he came back from the winding hole to return to the Brewood boatyard I gave him a cheery wave, having reported him whilst he was away. On another occasion a boatyard moron thought he was clever speeding through our fishing match and laughing. He wasn't laughing when, on his return, we tried our best to fill the boat with maggots and casters, knowing that customers would soon be complaining about clouds of flies in the cabin. Happy days.
