It's not just the speed and lack of control...to me the saddest part is the apparent lack of care or respect for other boaters nor for this 300 year old Grade 1 listed structure and part of our communal living national heritage. It is like crashing into the Tower of London by being drunk and then driving on. One was vexed ...

It reminds me of when I crashed a narrow boat on the Llangollen Canal when I was 12 back in 1971. I hadn't a clue which way to push the tiller and it didn't help being too short. Luckily I improved a few of years later.

The only reason this happens is because the Hire Firms don't train their customers. A forward-facing fixed camera system connected to "Hire Headquarters" in real time would prevent any subsequent arguments about the £100 fine per collision with the canal.

I’ve just come back from my first narrow boat holiday. The hire company were brilliant. They send out videos to watch online & there was another one when I got to the marina, then a comprehensive talk & handover when the boat was picked up. I’m sure most companies would do the same.

I think some of the blame must lay with the hire companies. It seems that they are so keen to hire out boats to the highest bidder regardless of ability to steer. Profit to the hire companies from those with the cash to spare vs those who would like to go on a canal holiday but just cant afford £1000 plus for the pleasure of it for 4 to 7 days. I fully respect the view of those who live and trade on our canal network, but money talks.......

There is a maximum speed the boat moves through water mid engine speed is sufficient for perfect control.you do not go faster with any more power as ti lowers the water in the channel all your power is just lowering heavy water also to much power when near bank causes low pressure to suck the hull over. I think that happened on Souis Canal.
