Sorry this happend, she is so lucky not to have crushed or broken arm, some people. I hire a boat every year, always the same company, the first time it was a 2 hr handover, the best 2 hr I have ever had and a real eye opener on how hard and fast the boats can get out of control. You cant blame the people, its the hire company sending people out with no knowledge on how to handle a boat that size.

I regularly hire a 58’ boat for a week, it’s expensive but still for me at least, a better option. The first time I took the boat out I was given a very basic ‘have a go’ lesson. Fortunately it was a quiet time of year and canal was relatively empty except for tied up boats. I was paranoid and spent the whole week travelling at tickover speeds. That said, it helped me gain valuable experience and on empty parts of the canal was able to practise. Years later I have been able to become reasonably experienced. Whilst tied alongside, several privately owned boats have bumped into my hire one. To date I have had quite a few scary encounters but luckily no collisions. However they do happen to the most experienced people, I guess that’s just part of being on a canal. It’s also quite common for people who live on their boats to be extremely rude and selfish from mooring up on water points and far to close to bridges. So please don’t smugly knock people who hire boats, after all private boat owners had to start somewhere themselves. That said, that bump was clearly very wrong. Let’s all get on and enjoy the beautiful canals.

I'm not smugly knocking anyone! In fact I made no comment but I show canal life whether it is good or bad.

Most hire companies say here's the keys off you go! An induction should be a given tbh.

Really? We hired many times from different companies before buying a boat and never found this to be true. Some are better than others with the briefing but never had keys thrown at me. Having lived on the canals for quite some time I can tell you poor boat handling comes in all shapes and sizes, not just hire boats.

@@philelliott5327I've been a liveaboard for 5 years now and I've never hit anyone. Yesterday the wind caught my stern when on an exposed embankment. It was sending me towards a moored hire boat. Without drama, I put it in reverse, used the wind to my advantage and a minor collision was averted. Most hire boaters thrash the throttle. It's either hard astern or full speed ahead. The Llangollen canal is like the whacky races in the summer. It's hellish as a liveaboard.

@@MaritimeFox Four years in myself. You learn pretty early on as a CC that if it starts to go wrong you should stop, back up as necessary and start again. This should be the first and last thing that hireboat firms tell their customers but of course half of them aren't even listening. I only move my boat at first light in the season for this reason... most of them are still hungover in bed... groaning and farting.

Can't steer on a straight bit so watch out on the corners, I always let the hire boats go on the lock landing and into the locks first. Saves a lot of repainting. There should be a law that all hire boats and L skippers must have a 6" rubber bumper all the way around their boats, just like the lifeboats.

a gust of wind or a shallow channel can push any boat off its course. its a collision sport, thats why they are mostly made of steel.

It is most certainly not a "collision sport" and by no means are all canal boats made of steel. Your ignorance shows.

I'm getting so fed up with these hire boats they couldn't give a hoot to the damage they cause then your left with all the drama of trying to get the hire company to pay out for damage .This is what crt want to turn the canals into a circus and drive us fulltimers off
