Great video!! In Chile we used the SIG 510-4 (Stg 57) made by Berretta and the SIG 540 family made by FAMAE. Sweet guns. Some army units still use the 510 for training and DMR , and Carabineros (the National Gendarmerie Police) use it for border security in the mountains, after 60 years they shoot like the first day.

Posting this here, but can you do a video on what it is that makes Swiss GP11 such a quality cartridge compared to its counterparts? Or even a video specifically on the stg 510's peculiar bolt head roller design and ejector, possibly covering why the swiss design seems like the rolls royce of roller delays.

In the US, our training is not realistic. Then again, we fight enough military conflicts to compensate - trial by fire. In the US military, we fire blanks for training but have BFAs. And we would never launch an infantry assault with our tanks, it's too dangerous. You can see in the video an infantryman having to quickly roll out of the way of the tracks of the tank. Almost a casualty from training. But Switzerland has not fought a real conflict in centuries, so I suppose they need to keep their servicemen and women ready through a more realistic training. The explosions around the training participants could lead to injuries too. Having said this, I must add: The 1985 tactics presented in this video are no longer existent. In the 1990's, the size of the Swiss army was reduced to facilitate a more 'guerilla' type of warfare. Before that, as shown in the video, the Swiss army would dig in and wait for the enemy. Why the change? 1) Suffer less casualties by giving up the "Plateau", which is assumed to be the objective of the enemy who wants to use Switzerland as a shortcut to attack other countries; and 2) Superiority of airplanes/drones (new) that render trench warfare quite ineffective - we see that in Ukraine where troops that sit idle for too long don't last.

The 2 leg support was also a disaster. Totally bad design. I once had the pleasure of holding an M16 and despite its age it was in a completely different league. There is more patriotism being spread here instead of sticking to the truth. Long after the war, Switzerland was extremely modern and innovative when it came to military technology. But politicians have stalled this, a good example of self-constructed fighter aircraft. After that, most of the company's own defense industry was limited to 0815 products. The only exception to this was Oerlikon Bührle.

It's important to understand the political context behind the Stgw. 57's adoption. The Suez Crisis and the Hungarian Revolution meant that innovative concepts such as the intermediate cartridge had to be dropped in favor of a more conservative design for immediate production. In comparison to the Kar. 31, the Stgw. 57 was a huge technological jump, even when compared to the Stgw. 90.
@Knightrider27092 ай бұрын
It was a robust system. But also with a negative side. The recoil when firing should not be underestimated. The length and weight were always a problem. When I was retrained on Stgw 90, it was a quantum leap to Stgw 57. I didn't shed a tear for the Stgw 57 for a second.

The Panzer 61/68 shown here in production was a Swiss development that was more or less a flop. Not really modern at the time and the tanks had teething problems, gearboxes and electrics that could only be partially remedied when the tank and the Centurion were replaced by Leo 2 A4s. Nevertheless, the Swiss army was quite well equipped until the mid-1980s. Several hundred battle tanks: Centurion Pz61/68 and almost 600 combat aircraft: Mirage, Hunter, Venom, Vampire and later 160 F5E Tigers were added.
