haha. the reason they don't have soldier haircut is the fact, that the swiss army is a militia, a citizen army. after basic training every man had to regularly 3 weeks repetition courses in the army. so everyone comes from his cilive life, his job to the army service and goes back to civil life. thats why rules were not so harsh for hair.

I've been to Switzerland 2x and on the 2nd trip had the good fortune to be in an area where they were on training maneuvers and war games, so your presentations bring back fond memories of a wonderful country and it's skilled military, seeing armor drive up the mountain road past the house, hearing artillery and small arms...all in all midst of alpen life...much different from here in the US. Thanks again for all your presentations!

At close quarters, a rifle with attached bayonet is a formidable weapon. With some training, it is an extremely efficient tool for slashing, stabbing, crushing and deflecting.

Many examples of adapted aikido/judo falls/throws/strikes and locks here. Absolute commitment from the attackers helps. Y

indeed, that said aikido/jiu-jitsu locks are extremely effective if done well and non-lethal. the rolling is actually extremely useful in ranged or close combat, being able to go to ground and back up instantly if thrown, falling with reduced impact or moving fast while staying low

You can commit once you trust your opponent. It also works the other way round.

I have one of this jackets, it's is just the best one I had, I often travel with it carrying clothes, stuff, food, and even a tent... P.s. it even had 'hooks' that connect to a quasi backpack and a hood that had a camouflage fabric face cover .

From what I can tell, a Stgw 57 is the better rifle for beating on somebody than an M16A1. It just has so much more mass!

Yup. That thing is just brutal. My dad told me they trained to beat holes into brick walls with their rifles. If thtat thing hits you, you're out for good.

@@walangchahangyelingden8252 well technically yes, but having handled those rifles I can tell you that the rubbery quality of the buttstock only really shows on slowmo when firing rifle grenades. It is nothing like the rubber buttpad of a modern rifle.

Yes, using a StGw 57 like a Morgenstern was a very tried and popular technic back then (RS 221/1988)

@@DaletheStgwDude well, in the russian military there is a very old joke that can be roughly translated as "In order to engage in hand-to-hand combat, a soldier must lose his rifle, grenades, bayonet, shovel, body armour and helmet and then find a flat piece of open ground with a similarly idiotic enemy standing there"

That was the age when people thought karate chops will magically put people down :-) But to be fair, I don't know if there is any way one could realistically train hand to hand combat without killing each other.

A cricket box would help, slightly. I was taught to get my arm on the ground before my body if I was being thrown there. However you might come up against someone who knows how to use the momentum of his body flying through the air to put you down instead.

I think wrestling / grappling and boxing would be more useful, and they can be trained realistically.

@@kukuyeah I like those arts, but I would still say that they can only be trained somewhat realistically. In combat, you won't be wearing boxing gloves and in training you don't want to break bones, dislocate joints, hurt the eyes etc. Also, in hand to hand combat, you would use any weapon or thing that can help you, and this again can't be trained realistically, only with heavy protection gear.

That 1914-18 shovel didn't age at all !

Apparently "emo-style" haircuts and sideburns are allowed by suiss army grooming policy.

For his annual three-week rehearsal course (WK or CR), the soldier does not necessarily want to shave his head like a recruit

It's incredibly heavy and the rubber buttstock won't stop all that weight from smacking you hard. The entrenching tool is the only other bludgeon that compares afaik.

What seems curious is that swiss soldiers are quite long haired.

With a bit of Led Zeppelin in the soundtrack.
