SWISS ARMS INDUSTRIES: 1968 Vintage Film (w/ EN Subs)

This interesting film, most likely created to promote the new DTPG/GDR/GDA, explains the rational and systematic process of Swiss military equipment development, testing, acquisition and production. Overall, these images reinforce the doctrine of "total defense", showing the close cooperation of Swiss industry, artisans and civilians with government agencies.
As usual, subtitled and resynchronized for your viewing pleasure.
Many thanks again to the VBS Mediathek for their excellent digitization work. The quality of the images and sound are superb.

The tank that is being developed was a project calle Panzer 74. it got canceled but it would have been similar to the Chieftain in many ways, maybe a bit more mobile though it was supposedto use the same gun as the Chieftain for example

Interesting to watch - and relaxing! I can’t help but notice how well everything seems to be made. This being Switzerland, I probably shouldn’t be surprised. 🙂🇨🇭

I think the thing to take from this is they maximised the spending of Swiss Taxation in Switzerland ! Unlike what goes on, world wide, today. Great video.

I own a stg 57 bayonet assembled in Waffenfabrik Bern in 1982 with a Wenger made and marked blade. I love how stylish and durable Swiss gear is too, also being the proud owner of 2 bread bags, one vinyl covered one made in 1981 and a salt and pepper one made in 1965.

Nice video! Always cool to see late 1960s computers and manufacturing processes. My first job out of college (in 1987) was as a civilian employee (Federal civil service) of the US Army supporting tank and artillery ammo. Ah the memories...

Those videos are super interesting to me, because my dad served during that time in the army... Hearing stories from him (mountain greandier) is one thing, but seeing stuff or how its made , is a totally different thing. Also its an interesting time capsule into a time i heard a lot about but didnt witness myself. Ok yea and im a electormechanical engineer... there is also a certain "professional" interest n those machines of this specific video. Or in other words: Läck bobi so geil!

So we can see what happens to inon bombs dropped from supersonic aircraft and know to propel and control them. But the seems to be only one way to find out what happens to the driver when his lorry tumbles down the slope - the non lethal way, that is. I wonder if the lorries are driveable after that by a fresh driver. Battery acid has done for a few cars after a simple roll. The real reason that this film can be released is because the army had gone a step ahead. Yes, I was brought up to know electromechanical devices and thermionic valves.

Fascinating look at manufacture and trialling of military gear. I wonder how much of this industry remains in Switzerland? I use a B&T APC .223 carbine for my home defence rifle. The fit and finish of Swiss made arms are still amazing.

Neo liberals as you call it are far right industry big guns who wanna supressing all rules for making money and laundering it in fiscal paradises. The exact contrary of leftists who can called progresives and in a no manners " liberals"

I remember seeing this in my RS. However I am not sure it is a 1968 film. In it I see some equipment which was handed out to the troops a bit later. Specifically 1971 helmets and a 1974 12cm mortar being spray painted. Although the helmet was possibly some test run, I think the mortar was a bit early to be in industrial production.

The Panzer 61/68 shown here in production was a Swiss development that was more or less a flop. Not really modern at the time and the tanks had teething problems, gearboxes and electrics that could only be partially remedied when the tank and the Centurion were replaced by Leo 2 A4s. Nevertheless, the Swiss army was quite well equipped until the mid-1980s. Several hundred battle tanks: Centurion Pz61/68 and almost 600 combat aircraft: Mirage, Hunter, Venom, Vampire and later 160 F5E Tigers were added.
