The Swiss Armed Forces operates on land and in the air, serving as the primary armed forces of Switzerland. Under the country's militia system, regular soldiers constitute a small part of the military and the rest are conscripts or volunteers aged 19 to 34 (in some cases up to 50). Because of Switzerland's long history of neutrality, the Swiss Armed Forces do not take part in conflicts in other countries, but do participate in international peacekeeping missions. Switzerland is part of the NATO Partnership for Peace programme.
The regulations of the Swiss militia system stipulate that the soldiers keep their own personal equipment, including all personally assigned weapons, at home (until 2007 this also included ammunition), or in an armoury. Compulsory military service applies to all male Swiss citizens, with women serving voluntarily. Males usually receive initial orders at the age of 18 for military conscription eligibility screening. About two-thirds of young Swiss men are found suitable for service, while alternative service exists for those found unsuitable. Annually, approximately 20,000 persons are trained in basic training for 18 weeks (23 weeks for special forces).
The reform "Army XXI" replaced the previous model "Army 95" and was adopted by popular vote in 2003, reducing manpower from 400,000 to about 200,000 personnel, with 120,000 receiving periodic military training and 80,000 reservists who have completed their total military training requirements. A further reform effective in 2018 heralded the reduction of forces to 100,000 members.

I was in the Swiss Army, and I did alot of LSD and we all smoked very much hash everyday, all the time! We even baked hash cakes and cookies and distributed them around. It was an abstract experience. :)
For info, every man has to join the military and can take the weapon and all the military equipment home with him, so that we are ready within 1-2. And every year we have to go shooting at 300m and for tourists and those who don't know the country it's funny when they see normal people with a SIG-550 on the train or bus

@@roodoodalthough you still have to choose between these two options! You can’t not do anything except when you’re incapable( sickness, blindness,etc) but then you have to pay a big percentage of your income. I find that decision very good for the country! Not everyone wants to have a weapon or fight wars! Instead they help the country in other ways. I will definitely choose the military, because why not! Don’t want to work in a retirement home!😅

@@user-jh5mc1ih8v and is an Isle within Nato Countries, besides with Austria which ist also neutral (in some mannor). In WW2 Suisse or Switzerland was so Kind to Bring Back the people to the German border who could flew from Nazi terrorism into the neutral Suisse.
Und das sage ich als Schweizer, es ist leider viel zuwenig um eine wirklich glaubwürdige Landesverteidigung längerfristig aufrecht erhalten zu können. Man darf nicht vergessen, die Schweiz hatte im Gebirge auch Festungen bzw. Reduit. Diese Installationen wurden altersbedingt nun stillgelegt und ausgemustert. Man wird jedoch da wieder auf ein modernisiertes Konzept zurückkommen müssen. Das sage ich als ehemaliger ADA der Red Br 22 !!!

we should diversify our fighter jets, there are so many electronics inside, who knows what the US could do to spy on us if we owned it, and if we had any sort of conflict with a nato country they might just turn them off, we should be neutral and get other fighter jets as well or build our own facility
