just watching this after Englands lucky win against Slovakia today (30/6/2024) - wow. The difference in play from 1977 to today is remarkable. I guess back then, footballers were not on 100grand a week. And it shows!

There is some goal footage missing particularly Arsenal away? Both 3-1 defeats against Chelsea & Arsenal were painful & the less said about the 6-1 cup hammering at Bolton & 7-1 at Newcastle in the league the better.... shocking performances beyond words.

I was watching on the East Stand lower tier that night. The match officials were very poor and the amount of time wasting by Milan was extreme. Mullery and Sogliano we’re having a running battle the whole game but the Italian’s red card was a joke decision. Steve Perryman laid the foundations of his legendary status at Spurs that night, what a great player.

I can still remember the extraordinary crowd surge & roar behind the goal when Greaves headed that goal. I was 12 years old & nothing at a soccer match has ever come close since. Saw Jimmy play 3 times, twice for Spurs that season & once at Highbury for the Hammers - Jimmy scored in every game. The greatest player ever imo.

I remember this as a very entertaining game when Pleat's Spurs were starting to hit their stride. Both teams played well. Spurs deserved at least a draw but conceded sloppy goals. You had to feel for John Polston. I think that was only his second start and that happens after about 1 minute!

If Peter Shilton had a weakness, it was definitely penalties. Have seen a number of old England matches recently, and apart from the friendly v West Germany in 1985 in which he saved a penalty, on the other occasions, Shilton has just flopped to his side, seemingly making no attempt to get to the ball.

You wouldn't see these speculative long passes in today's football. All much more scientific now. Better as a spectacle? I don't know, but the arrival of many foreign players in today's game has, in my opinion, raised the skill levels.

That England team had too many players who were nowhere near top international standard - Marsh, Chivers, Storey, Hunter, Madeley, McFarland, Bell, etc. Some of the players looked overweight , slow and underfit, and their technical limitations, with a few exceptions, were underwhelming.

England were building a strong team in the 1974-75 season, beating the Czech’s, Portugal & West Germany. Just why Hudson & Ball were dispensed with beats me. This was Ball’s last game, should have been captain until the European Championship qualifiers were completed at least . Revie seemed to loose the plot in the 1975-76 season. ⚽️
