Seeing Ralph Coates now it's hard to equate him as a top player back then. Think he previously was with Burnley who had brought on many players & then sold them to the big clubs. Great down the wings with his comb-over billowing out, as was Bobby. Nice to see they gave it the chop.

I seem to remember reading in The Glory Days that Bill Nicholson's wife 'Darkie' thought the softly-spoken Ralph Coates was really nice and somehow persuaded Bill to buy him, something I doubt knowing the man... Bill always defended his signing of RC as being a good call while the general impression was that he was just short of being a really top player. Great to watch when on good form though and hit a beauty to beat Norwich in an otherwise drab '73 LC final.

@@alunjones685 I liked him. Went to my first ever match at Everton v Spurs opening season 1971 aged 18, when they came out the smell of lineament hit your nostrils. I was behind the goal on that semi circle bit, they had a corner, Ralph wacked it beautifully & it felt like slow motion as Alan Gilzean crouching headed it in, he headed so many goals for Spurs. It felt odd having no TV replay as I was used to in my TV football world up till then. I so wanted to see my favourite team Leeds but being in the Army it didn't happen bar one attempt at Birmingham but was called off due to snow.

It is sad to see RC not being a regular for England. He is a classy player though.

Geoff Hurst was beginning life after West Ham ....the next season Bobby Moore followed suit.

Today I'm sure Stoke City would have worn some kind of weird away kit. Like purple etc.
