He was a great player.

Thank you. Been looking for long highlights of this. Top West German team there who could have (maybe even should have) won the world cup (if Schuster and Rummenigge were fit and the team was not exhausted in the final). Another channel uploaded England v Brazil in full from May 1981 - a good watch and England played well against that famous Brazil team. England had some good players. The 1982 world cup will always be my favourite. Lots of good teams. By this time however Thompson was on his way out at Liverpool and was 'finished' by the end of this season he was shocking - so to see him playing here is disconcerting.

I believe one of the reasons that Phil Thompson maybe got the number of caps he did for England was that Kevin Beattie's career had been decimated through injury, Beattie in the central defence would give England a level of speed and defensive prowess that Thompson (though he played well in the two tourneys) possibly at the highest level did not have (Peter Taylor said that him and Clough liked to target Thompson with Robertson in Liverpool/Notts Forest matches!)...one of the reasons therefore that Ray Wilkins should have played a screening role in front of that England backline in Spain. Agree about England's performance against a formidable Brazil, (Coppell was class that night..along with Wilkins, Robson and McDermott)

@@kailashpatel1706 Coppell seemed anonymous to me but Peter Barnes was a constant danger. You not getting them mixed up? Brazil were a bit disappointing but seemed to play within themselves.

@@randyborstol2491 Thank god they did...Peter Barnes England career faded away did it not?, he never made it to the Euro 80 let alone Espana 82

Completely agree about West Germany in 1982. Add Paul Breitner to that list along with Schuster and Rummenigge. 'Kalle' shows his class here with the first goal as the Germans show the kind of one touch passing around the penalty area that England were incapable of.

Being 58 I was 17 in late 1982, even though I have a very good memory (I remember the 1970 World Cup games as a 5 year old), I can not remember this match!.

Thanks for all the great videos you put on,great memories,keep up the good work and great matches.

Do I remember this right? West Germany beaten by Algeria in the Espana '82 opening game? A side issue,if I was part of Nike I would design a kit similar to this one. Even though I am now a US citizen England's kit it too similar to the US kit.

Nike should come back with a design after all they went through the trouble of knocking Umbro out of their contract with the England team. Or maybe their chicken of what Admiral did designing this England kit.

Ruminigge was unfit how even WGermany even got they where they were in that year's world cup is a headshaker. And how they put a performance like this months later is remarkable. But England was going thru a process now that Bobby Robson was manager. I'm also surprised about the attacking prowess put on by WGermany.

A makeshift England outfit losing their first game since September 1981 after Don Howe had been brought in to rebuild the defence...the earlier 1982 WC was a case study of how better England management (Jack Charlton not even Clough) could have got them further in Spain than Greenwood who never made effective use of a good group of players..Charlton would have done better with the same players...!

I actually though Charlton under performed with Ireland with the players he had. he was way too negative, physical and stopped them playing. His style was awful to watch.

@@randyborstol2491 Yep agree...i think he possibly thought in his mind those players were not maybe as good to play in a more attacking style (which i think he overdid it certainly)..In 1982 he was fiercely arguing with Greenwood/Howe in a TV interview that he was not using Mariner's movement to pull off to the wide post and let Francis in through the middle...(the goal that done Kuwait was exactly what he had in mind and how they should have approached the second phase knockout).. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y61nxM6JlaevfdY.html

@@randyborstol2491 rubbish, he gave Ireland a good side working with a mix bag from all divisions. He signed up players who had multiple international choices like Scotsman Ray Houghton. Charlton had solid success in gaining promotions from middling northern teams. Ireland loved him & he helped the peace process indirectly by managing the Irish national team. He knew his eggs.

Look at the players he had and the teams they played for - Beglin, Aldridge, Houghton, Whelan, Lawrenson at Liverpool ; McGrath, Moran, Stapleton at Man United , Quinn and O'Leary at Arsenal; Sheedy from Everton and Galvin and Hughton from Tottenham, Liam Brady. When the shackles came off v Soviet Union in Euro 1988 they were very unlucky not to win against the team that got to the final of that 8 team tournament. I think the players defied Charlton that night. Against Holland in 1988 and Italy in 1990 in their big must win games - they reverted to cowardly type and lost both 1-0. Charlton did not win any single game at the 1990 world cup in normal time - all tedious displays. Did not even qualify for Euro 92 which Denmark won. Charlton was a long ball merchant at Middlesborough. Ecstasy contributed more to the peace process than Charlton did.

@@randyborstol2491 there you go but cowardly never, they played their hearts out. But we will agree to disagree Randy, that's football, I view one way you the other. As for ecstasy really daft, he did help Ireland & N.Ireland breakdown barriers. A great man who should have been knighted as he done much more than brother Bobby did after both hung their boots up. Bobby went upstairs while Jackie got out there & managed & fans loved him. That's enough for me.
