Most of the videos here are Bible reviews. I'm more interested in the visual than the tactile interaction; typeface, paper quality, and layout matter more to me than hide and binding. Most of the Bibles I review I bought myself or they were given to me by relatives. In these reviews, I try to provide you with the details I wish I'd known myself before I bought the book. You will likely disagree with me on some things, especially if you like bright red letters and skinny gray fonts; references at the bottom of the page; or if you insist that all Bibles be in a single-column, paragraph-by-paragraph format.
I've been criticized for being critical of Bibles! But my goal is to provide the Bible-buying public with information to help them decide how to spend their hard-earned money. That necessarily includes showing flaws and imperfections.

Would have been nice to have edge-lined the leather cover (as they did with KJV and NKJV), but the other features look very nice.
I do hope you will review as soon as it comes out (anticipated to be November 2024) the RSV Ignatius Study Bible which is finally coming out as a one volume book with both OT and NT. Yes, we've missed your reviews.

Welcome back. I have an older RSV. Although it’s a smaller Bible, the print of that era is very readable. I’ll have to check it when I get home, but I think it may be the first revision from the original printing. This is a nice looking Bible. ✌️

I have been waiting on this release. I still have my old red hardback from seminary, and my ordination Bible was a RSV as well. Both over 40 years ago! Thanks for posting, Dr. Jones. Thank you for the review, I think I may purchase the older much smaller New Testament (red Bible) which you displayed. I now purchased the Blue hard covered Greek Edition Bible from Thrift Book Store. A couple of weeks back the book was being sold for more than $90.00 dollars, but the price dropped to $42 dollars. Been reading the Bible on and off for the past couple of years. I've always been a fan of the KJV Bible, I think it's the best English version. But decided to purchase the Bible which you were reviewing in this video because I started learning Greek over four weeks ago. I must say Greek is much more complicated compared to Spanish due to having to learn a brand-new Alphabet system. But after the fourth week I think, I am beginning to have a broader understanding of the Greek vocabulary and hopefully soon be able to at least read and understand my first paragraph. Once again thank you for the review of these excellent books I can't wait to receive my edition soon.

I have a Catholic Family Bible, a large edition, bound in genuine white leather, which was produced as a Catholic version of the sort of King James Family Bible found in many homes at the time. Since the translation of the new Confraternity Bible (so called because it was arranged by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) was not complete, it uses a mixture of translations. The Confraternity text is used for Genesis to Ruth, the Psalms and the New Testament. The Douay-Challoner translation is used for the remaining books of the Old Testament. It was published by the Good Counsel Publishing Co., Inc. of Chicago. In due course, the translation of the Confraternity Bible was fully completed and this was published in, I think, about 1973. The New American Bible is simply a revision of the Confraternity Bible. It is considered a reliable translation. It is not used in England, mainly because the language is a little too “transatlantic” and the 1966 translation of the Jerusalem Bible has been used in the Lectionary in England, however, this will be replaced, in Advent this year, by the English Standard Version (Catholic Edition). Until now, for teaching and study purposes, the English Church has used the Second Catholic Edition of the Revised Standard Version, since the Jerusalem Bible is not considered to be a direct, literal translation from the original languages. There are rumours that the translators used the very popular original French version of the Jerusalem Bible, translating this into English, while comparing their translation, of course, with the original texts (this has never been established and is denied by the translators!). The New Jerusalem Bible was not considered adequate by the English Bishops Conference and the Revised New Jerusalem Bible was considered even less satisfactory. However, in my view, the original 1966 translation of the Jerusalem Bible, in the version with the full set of translators’ notes, is quite reliable. I prefer reading the Knox translation myself, since it is a direct translation from the Vulgate made entirely by Monsignor Knox himself, without any assistance. Therefore, it does not read as if it has been put together by a committee and the style is uniform from start to finish. As to reliability, it is only as reliable as the Vulgate from which it was translated, of course. I have the three volume version with a full set of translator’s notes, which make it reliable, since Monsignor Knox does point out where the Latin text departs from the original Greek or Hebrew and he also makes it clear where he has used rather more colloquial language in translating from the Latin, although he never departs from the original meaning of the text. However, the language which Monsignor Knox uses is that of an English public school boy of the 1940s, which, of course, is what he was! The English Church did intend to use the Knox translation for the Lectionary, however, the instructions issued by Pope Pius XII in 1943 (in Divino Afflante Spiritu) made this impossible and the 1966 translation of the Jerusalem Bible was used as more closely adhering to the terms of that instruction. However, the Knox translation was used in preparing the new Breviary (‘the Divine Office”) for some of the passages of Scripture. Also, the new Breviary included some texts using the New English Bible (a Presbyterian translation) and the RSV, of course.
What do they mean that these women will someday judge angels?
The norms for Scriptural scholarship are to be found in “Divino Afflante Spiritu” issued by Pope Pius XII in 1943. This requires all Catholic translations of the Sacred Scriptures, in future, to be direct, literal, translations from the original languages, using the best and most accurate sources. After this direction was issued, it was no longer possible for the English speaking nations to continue to use either the Douay Rheims or the Knox translations, since they are not direct translations from the original languages, but translations from the Vulgate with the original languages compared, where necessary. I do still use the Knox translation, since I have the full, three volume, version, which has Monsignor Knox’s full translator’s notes, where he sets out where the Vulgate departs from the original languages. He was a Geek and Hebrew scholar and he translated the whole Bible single handed. As a result, his translation does read very easily, since it was not put together by a committee, as are most translations. In England, until recently, we have used two translations. The Jerusalem Bible (1966 edition) is used in the Lectionary, with some modifications introduced by Pope Benedict XVI. For teaching and study purposes and for translating passages included in document issued from Rome, until recently, the second Catholic edition of the RSV has been used. Now, this is to be replaced by the Anglicised Catholic edition of the ESV, which is now to be used for all purposes, rather than using two translations side by side, as in the past. So, the Lectionary has been revised to use the ESV. In Canada, the NRSV is used. In the USA, the New American Bible is used. This was formerly known as the “Confraternity Bible” since it was prepared by the US Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. It is considered to be a good, direct, literal translation from the original languages. It is not used in England, or in other English speaking countries, since the English is a little too American in style. I cannot really see why the translation publicised by this video should be necessary. There are already good translations which satisfy the norms set in 1943. I shall, myself, probably continue to use both the RSV (second Catholic edition) and the Knox version, for study purposes, since these contain much useful historical information. For example, since the Church used the Vulgate for so many years, it is useful to know how the Vulgate translates particular passages (sometimes, not quite accurately). Finally, of course, I do have a King James Bible (with Apocrypha) since the language is familiar in many cases. The original KJV remains such a good and accurate translation that a version has been produced using the modern equivalent English where the language has changed over the centuries, the New KJV. This is the version used by the Eastern Orthodox Churches in England and also by most of the Pentecostal and similar fundamentalist Churches.

I once read through the whole bible using the JB including the apocrypha about 15 years ago. The notes were very informative and helped me a lot. I also have a New American Bible (not the NABRE) that has a lot of notes too. Even though I am not a catholic, I like reading the notes on their bibles.

Sorry, but I can only tell you what I know, not what I don't know. And I can't identify the best Eastern Orthodox Bible in English. But perhaps others will see your comment and offer their opinions.

How different are they from the notes in the original JB? Are they significantly different or mostly the same notes?
The NJB reuses some notes from the JB, but it also adds new ones and modifies or removes old ones. So they're similar, but not quite the same. Thanks for the question!

Very strange they did not include the apocrypha, also a strange translation to do this in. Orthodox recommends the kjv or nkjv and are in line with majority text translations. The csb is a critical text base. Im unsure if its worth it, just finished the kjv study bible and have the life application & csb study bible. also want to read through the esv study notes.

Late to this video but I think faithfulness in Ephesians 2 refers to the faithfulness of Jesus, not us. Other scriptures would suggest this. Rom 3:22, 26 Gal 2:16, 20 Eph 3:12 Phil 3:9 Literal translations will read “faithfulness OF Jesus Christ” He was faithful because we were not and could not be. He is out portion and we bring nothing to the table, not even our own mustered up faith. It’s the gift of God. Thank you for the review!
