Two Typos in the Thomas Nelson KJV with Apocrypha

A brief video showing two surprising typographical errors in the recently published King James Version (KJV) with Apocrypha from Thomas Nelson (ISBN 9781400332113, Style 9746BK). Thanks go to Darrell for discovering these errors.
At Wisdom 5.14 the word 'ungodly' has been replaced by 'Godly.' So where the original KJV read, 'For the hope of the ungodly is like dust that is blown away with the wind,' this edition has, 'For the hope of the Godly is like dust that is blown away with the wind.'
A similar error occurs at Ecclesiasticus 11.17. Where the original KJV reads, 'The gift of the Lord remaineth with the godly,' the recent Nelson edition has, 'The gift of the Lord remaineth with the ungodly.'
I checked the all occurrences of 'godly' and 'ungodly' in the Apocrypha and the 66 books of the Protestant canon, and I found no other errors.

    Heretical prayer: O Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the dispenser of all the gifts which God grants to us miserable sinners; and for this end He has made thee so powerful, so rich, and so bountiful, in order that thou mayest help us in our misery. Thou art the advocate of the most wretched and abandoned sinners who have recourse to thee: come to my aid, for I recommend myself to thee. In thy hands I place my eternal salvation, and to thee I entrust my soul. Count me among thy most devoted servants; take me under thy protection, and it is enough for me. For, if thou protect me, I fear nothing; not from my sins, because thou wilt obtain for me the pardon of them; nor from the devils, because thou art more powerful than all hell together; nor even from Jesus, my judge, because by one prayer from thee He will be appeased. But one thing I fear: that in the hour of temptation I may through negligence fail to have recourse to thee and thus perish miserably. Obtain for me, therefore, the pardon of my sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace ever to have recourse to thee, O Mother of Perpetual Help. This is a legit Roman Catholic prayer, look up "O Mother of Perpetual Help" if you want to know if it’s legit. This is super heretical. This doctrine of invoking departed saints doesn’t seem just like "hey it’s like praying to a friend.". .

    I fully accept that these are typos, but what I find interesting is that the typo in Wisdom 5:14 can actually relate to John 3:8 in a positive context. The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit. John 3:8 The typo in Ecclesiasticus 11:17 can be viewed in a similar light as well in the context of the previous verse: Error and darkness had their beginning together with sinners: and evil shall wax old with them that glory therein. Ecclesiasticus 11:16 The "gift" of the Lord being error and darkness for sinners and waxing old alongside them, which is a juxtaposition to his "favor" which brings prosperity. It's referred to as a "gift" as the sinner walking in their ways, their "gift" continues them onto damnation, while God's "favor" brings true prosperity. This correlates to Psalm 73: 1 Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart! 2 But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling, My steps had almost slipped. 3 For I was envious of the arrogant As I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 4 For there are no pains in their death, And their body is fat. 5 They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like mankind. 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; The garment of violence covers them. 7 Their eye bulges from fatness; The imaginations of their heart run riot. Psalm 73

    Yes, it's curious. Perhaps not as bad an error as the "Wicked Bible" of 1631, which left the "not" out of the seventh commandment. The case was commented on by Peter Heylyn in 1668: "His Majesties Printers, at or about this time [1632], had committed a scandalous mistake in our English Bibles, by leaving out the word Not in the Seventh Commandment. His Majesty being made acquainted with it by the Bishop of London, Order was given for calling the Printers into the High-Commission where upon the Evidence of the Fact, the whole Impression was called in, and the Printers deeply fined, as they justly merited". Thomas Nelson take heed!

    From Thomas Nelson: "There are no mistranslations or errors in this edition of the Apocrypha. It is a more modern translation done in the 20th century rather than the one that accompanied the 17th century edition with the 1611 KJV. However, we are looking at it again and considering a change to an older edition of the Apocrypha for future publications." That is not cool. They should admit that they messed up when the errors are that bad. They should post a PSA about their translation, discontinue it, reprint it w/o those errors, or do literally anything other than what they did. Source: On Nov 9, 2023, someone left a bad review on this Bible on the KJV Store, citing this. On Nov 11, 2023, KJV Store replied that they contacted Thomas Nelson and received that response.

    The thing is, for Thomas Nelson specifically, their whole reference Bible is like that. My Bible from ages 6 to 19 was a Thomas Nelson KJV Reference Edition WITHOUT the apocrypha, and it was riddled with typos. What most sticks out to me is that the text from Genesis to Revelation was filled with extra apostrophes: for example, the text often had the words "theirs" and "hers" spelled as "their's" and "her's," which any sixth-grader or even younger should know is not allowed in English. The text overall seemed to have been assembled very un-professionally. When I read aloud for family worship, a passage was pointed out to me where my Bible said "will" where everyone else's used "shall."

It’s not to be confused with the CTS (Catholic Truth Society) New Catholic Bible. The NCB is now probably the most readily available Bible in Catholic stores, due to the distribution power of CBP, yet because it’s relatively new it has received scant attention. But it’s fabulous! imho. Very faithful, occasionally creatively clarifying, and nearly always the most readable of the many reputable English language Bibles I’ve looked over. Yes, I wish I had the large print edition. But my personal size edition feels marvelous in my hand and imparts a sense of devotion, even if it sometimes challenges my eyes! Thanks for being receptive! A word of caution (or challenge!): CBP seems to acknowledge that the translation is essentially a project intended to create a house version of the Bible in order, partly, to avoid copyright royalty fees. They cite a certain Franciscan friar as the director of the translation, and claim to aim for a literal and readable translation, but don’t otherwise specify the other members of the translation team or the sources that guided this new translation. I’d love to see where you rank it on your literal-to-dynamic equivalence scale, and how you regard the quality of the translation. Just when my research brought me to the ESV as being my favorite translation, I stumbled on the NCB, which supplanted it according to my main criteria of having normal, well-written English.

When I read aloud for family worship, a passage was pointed out to me where my Bible said "will" where everyone else's used "shall." I didn't compare it word-for-word all the way through with other KJVs, but what I did notice I consider bad enough that I wouldn't even give that Bible as a gift if I could help it.

    Will it be fair to say that NRSV more accurate than RSV? And if one has to read a classical Bible translation then why not read KJV (greatest book of English language), as RSV has been replaced by NRSV? Does it makes sense to read RSV now, or is it defunct like RV and ASV?

  • @RGrantJones

    @RGrantJones

    Жыл бұрын

    You ask some good questions, Hassan; but I don't have good answers. I still use the RV, ASV, and RSV, so they're not defunct as far as I'm concerned. Many people still use the RSV, particularly Catholics. The RSV2CE is a very lightly modified version of the RSV. I'm not sure about accuracy. I haven't come up with an objective way to measure it yet. But my sense is that, although literal translations are sometimes misleading, in general, more literal translations are more accurate than less literal ones. That suggests to me that the RSV is more accurate than the NRSV. I read the KJV every day during morning and evening prayer, but it does use outdated words and words that have changed meaning. So a more modern translation like the RSV (or ESV, NKJV, LSB, NASB, etc.) can be a useful supplement.

    @@RGrantJones Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I personally think that no English translation can ever surpass KJV when it comes to beauty and poetry. So, RSV will be more accurate than KJV but probably NRSV will be even more accurate according to English speaking academia. So, RSV has to be somewhere in the middle of poetry and more accuracy. I think not many people use RV and ASV now, but some specialists might? Maybe RSV might go towards obscurity too.

    Very interesting typos. Funny how they both coincide. It's going to make for good material for those believing there is a conspiracy on the loose. But, since they are in those spesific parts, maybe it's a conspiracy to... smuggle univeralist theology into the Bible🤫..or something like that. Nelson did bring it on themselves by having such an unlikely combo of typos. Maybe there is an angry atheist working the printing press🙂
