Deviations in 1 Maccabees, Nelson KJV with Apocrypha

This video shows four deviations in 1 Maccabees in the recently published Nelson King James Version (KJV) Center Column Reference Bible with Apocrypha (ISBN 9781400332113, Style 9746BK). The text deviates from that in the 1611 KJV and from the Cambridge Cameo.
They are:
1. 1 Mc 1.22 - 'crown' should be replaced with 'crowns'
2. 1 Mc 1.45 - 'sacrifices' should be replaced with 'sacrifice'
3. 1 Mc 1.57 - 'committed' should be replaced with 'consented'
4. 1 Mc 1.63 - 'the' should be replaced with 'they chose'
Deviations in 1 Maccabees not mentioned in the video:
5. 1 Mc 2.37 - 'will testify' should be replaced with 'shall testify'
6. 1 Mc 2.65 - 'always' should be replaced with 'alway'
00:00 Introduction
00:35 1 Mc 1.22 - 'crown' should be replaced with 'crowns'

Heretical prayer: O Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the dispenser of all the gifts which God grants to us miserable sinners; and for this end He has made thee so powerful, so rich, and so bountiful, in order that thou mayest help us in our misery. Thou art the advocate of the most wretched and abandoned sinners who have recourse to thee: come to my aid, for I recommend myself to thee. In thy hands I place my eternal salvation, and to thee I entrust my soul. Count me among thy most devoted servants; take me under thy protection, and it is enough for me. For, if thou protect me, I fear nothing; not from my sins, because thou wilt obtain for me the pardon of them; nor from the devils, because thou art more powerful than all hell together; nor even from Jesus, my judge, because by one prayer from thee He will be appeased. But one thing I fear: that in the hour of temptation I may through negligence fail to have recourse to thee and thus perish miserably. Obtain for me, therefore, the pardon of my sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace ever to have recourse to thee, O Mother of Perpetual Help. This is a legit Roman Catholic prayer, look up "O Mother of Perpetual Help" if you want to know if it’s legit. This is super heretical. This doctrine of invoking departed saints doesn’t seem just like "hey it’s like praying to a friend.". . :)

@RGrantJones There may be a source here for the Apocrypha (yet not with 3 Maccabees). Perhaps it is the "King James Version w/ Apocrypha" module for the Bible software program e-Sword, as it matches 3 of the 4 errors: 1Ma 1:22 "crown" 1Ma 1:57 "committed" 1Ma 1:63 "the" I would not be surprised if Nelson just grabbed the free, open source "Sword project" files (a Bible software project which e-Sword came from) and barely edited the text against any actual print edition of the Apocrypha.

@@RGrantJones Hah, and there you have it (with the software Book naming): Wisdom 5.14 For the hope of the Godly is like dust that is blown away with the wind; like a thin froth that is driven away with the storm; like as the smoke which is dispersed here and there with a tempest, and passeth away as the remembrance of a guest that tarrieth but a day. Sirach 11.17 The gift of the Lord remaineth with the ungodly, and his favour bringeth prosperity for ever. To recheck this info, the free software is: "e-sword" with a dot net address. Once within the program, the KJVA ("King James Version w/ Apocrypha") module can also be downloaded for free. BTW, thanks for all the info you have been providing. @@user-rs6kn2ft6s - thanks for that kind comment! So there's a connection between the apocrypha in this edition and the eSword module (Nelson relies on eSword, eSword is based on an earlier Nelson edition, or both are based on a third source), but, as you pointed out, some editing has been done. I just took at look at the eSword module for 2 Esdras 3.1, and it reads like the original and unlike the Nelson, so Nelson seems to have relied upon a different source for that book.

My New Cambridge Paragraph Bible will continue to be my KJV of choice. This one had potential, but Nelson needs to fix the typos and add back in the rest of the missing material (the preface and marginal notes) before I'm willing to consider it a legitimate option.

I haven't watched many of your videos in the past but really liked your BCP videos and have subscribed. So, you may have addressed this issue elsewhere. If I have given offense, please forgive me! The Nelson is a printing of a version of the 1769 revision of the KJV NOT the 1611--as are all others in the stores today--and that prior to David Norton's CAMBRIDGE PARAGRAPH BIBLE no truely accurate edition of 1611 has been published since 1877. To be honest, there is no one King James Version. Rather, there is a family of King James Versions. I think it was David Norton's textual history of the KJV which states that no two existing copies of the first edition of the 1611 are identical. Each and every page of these books has some slight discrepancy or slight wording or punctuation difference. While none of them in any way impact doctrinal orthodoxy, they do make any reference to THE King James Version problematic because the question immediately arises as to which copy is being referred to as the correct 1611 KJV and why.

I believe Thomas Nelson published a KJV with Apocrypha including 3 Maccabees on behalf of The New Apostolic Church, Canada in 1990. I wonder if this is where this edition originated and TN forgot? Some years later they also published the NKJV with an expanded apocrypha(!), which I’ve long been curious about.

When you refer to the expanded apocrypha of the Nelson-printed NKJV, are you referring to another New Apostolic Church bible with apocrypha, but as an NKJV instead of your previously mentioned KJV, or a non-NAC printing NKJV with apocrypha? One of these I see clearly as a typo (the/they). Are the others typos or intentional choices in translation from Greek? I’m not familiar with how the Nelson edition was assembled, either referencing original source or solely an earlier KJV.

  • @RGrantJones

    @RGrantJones

You're right. It is possible that the other three were intentional. The first and third are less literal than the 1611 KJV, in my opinion. It's possible that the second follows a variant reading Rahlfs lists as being present in one manuscript. Perhaps I should use the term 'deviations' in the future.

They added links to resources to validate their texts from Wisdom 5:14 and Ecclesiasticus 11:17 that you addressed in your previous video. Obviously they didn't verify their text with actual historical print copies of the KJV Apocrypha. Also, anyone reading these last two verses can see that they are wrong.
