    Beautiful video and fish!! Are they peaceful with slower fish and do they feed relatively up top? I want to add them to a river tank with stiphodon gobies and want to make sure they will get along with the gobies and not gobble all the food at the bottom 😅 thx for any insight!

  • @AguabonitaAquatics
    @AguabonitaAquatics2 ай бұрын

    They are fierce competitors, I would suspect they would acquire virtually all the food fed from above. It may be possible to feed the gobies larger pellets and have them receive an adequate amount of leftover food, but you may end up with some real chunky kali tawa. In my experience raising them from fry with large cories, they eventually outcompeted the cories for food, so much so, that I had to separate them. The cories could get some leftover pellets, but basically no frozen foods and just small amounts of baby brine shrimp. It may be possible, but I would say it would be difficult as you may have to target feed the gobies while the Kali Tawa are distracted with other food. Kali tawa are next level, ravenous feeders and don't seem to have a problem with taking food from the bottom. A just as beautiful alternative is the furcatus blue eye (forktail rainbowfish), they are heavy feeders, but aren't nearly as food crazed and only half-heartedly go after pellets on the bottom. Pictures don't do them justice, when people see them in my fishroom, they want to keep them more than any other fish I have!

  • @Fishnkitts
    @Fishnkitts2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for your insight! My plan would be to feed them up top with their own food, the gobies would get sinkable algae wafers and repashy. But Yeah my biggest concern is whether the tawa would gobble everything up after they ate no matter what. It sounds like that’s the case? :( If that’s the case i will pass on them and wait till I have no gobies, the gobies are sweet slow little guys 😭 Can furcata handle flow? My tank has moderate flow for the gobies and the furcata have teeny fins 😂❤ If they can I’d love to have them!

    I’m the said gentleman who Dean talked about. No Planaria worked great, but the recommendation I’d give if you have mystery snails is to get them out of the tank for a few days if possible. I’d do a 30-50% water change every other day for a week or so to get rid of the No Planaria left in the tank, or most of it after the treatment is done. The mystery snails definitely don’t like it. 3 out of 4 I had died because I didn’t change the water after. I just didn’t realize that’s what was making them sick. Pest snails did not get affected (of course), but the big snails will suffer. I’d treat the tank, wait for the hydra/planaria to die, then do a few water changes to get rid of the No Planaria leftovers.

I can honestly say, I've never tried them outside these parameters, but do expect they would be adaptable; they seem quite hardy. One of my first tropical fish ever, but I've never had a group of them. From what I've read they are very straightforward to breed. Lots of live food for the parents to put them in spawning condition, hatch the eggs in methylene blue and feed up the fry: microworms and live baby brine shrimp. Regular water changes. I've raised a lot of panda cories and a few other species and once you have them spawn it's not too tough. I wouldn't mind doing albinos, the long finned varieties are really cool... just need more tanks!!!

    Is there any chance I could buy some next time you have some fry, I would love to try and breed them, and they are defiantly one of the coolest corys I have seen.

    For sure. I have to get them to spawn again. One female went in October, but I completely missed it, ugh! Ramping them up right now with live foods and lots of water changes. Hopefully, it will be fairly soon. Paul in Edmonton and Darrin in Vancouver also have F1 groups, so hopefully between the three of us there will be some available soon.

    what tank size would you recommend for them?

    I would say 20 long + are ideal for luminatus, ivantsoffi and gertrudae. I would go with 29 gallon plus for a group of furcatus, they are a much bigger fish, 20 would be OK for breeding.

    Totally fine in all the tanks. To be perfectly honest I would say they are doing a lot better.

    I’ve seen both of those creatures in one of my tanks. I’ve seen Hydra in another tank of mine as well. Does adding salt kills them. My Shrimp tank had more Hydra and lots of Planaria in it. I lost lots of shrimps to one one these creatures. Thank you for sharing.

    I expect salt kills both hydra and planaria at higher concentrations. I don't see a standard dose or duration when used in combination with shrimp. Most anti-biotic/fungal/parasitic/helminth medications work by differential sensitivity. The animal you are trying to save is less sensitive and the one you are trying to kill is more sensitive. The problem with shrimp is they are generally a more sensitive species ( I expect some plants would also be sensitive). Would make for a great randomized control trial (for hobbyists) as no company would want to do it as there's no profits to be made off of salt. Good question, wish I had a lab to figure it out.

    From what i under stand the planaria will attach onto and into a pregnant shrimp and eat the babies. Yuk! I have only heard this once but it makes sense.

    Yes, yuck, I have seen video of them exiting shrimp as well. In my experience they are fairly non-threatening to neocaridina, but my numbers of planaria are low to nil, just a few tanks have them. The biggest numbers of planaria I have are in one of my neo cull tanks and the culls are breeding like crazy, so I'm unsure about their overall impact to the shrimp population. However, to be on the safe side my plan is to get rid of them and no planaria seems to be the way to go.

    Sawbwa resplendens, Asian Rummy Nose. The males are stunning fish. There is some good info here: www.seriouslyfish.com/species/sawbwa-resplendens/
