Thank you for going through this so well, and so thoroughly. For myself, I've come to the decision to just block Sabine Hossenfelder altogether. She may once have been a legitimate scientist and/or science journalist, but that is no longer the case. She is now the Rush Limbaugh of science journalism: a shock jocky who says what she says only to get attention by being controversial, not to simplify, clarify, or explain ideas so as to improve anyone's understanding of them, instead throwing out conspiracy theories supported by only fictional sources and references as if they were legitimate and had real support. The algorithms in social media platforms promote engagement more than anything else, regardless of whether that engagement is positive or negative, and generating negative emotions is still much easier than generating positive feedback. I refuse to engage in what she is doing, as anything else gives her more attentino than she deserves.

Neurodivergent people are at a significantly increased risk of obesety and therefore diabetes and gestational diabetes. I think the studies linking weight of parents to neurodivergence do not take that into account. Especially if you add in the large number of undiagnosed parents.

Rates of autism have quadrupled. This would have anything to do with DSM 5 that too 16 disorders combining them into 4 disorders listed under autism. ( Autistic Disorder: Asperger’s Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, NOS (not otherwise specified), Rett’s Disorder, and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder). In 2013 the DSM 5 updated agin took these 4 and put them under Autistic Spectrum Disorder. So saying there are 4 times more diagnosis. To me that is completely logical. We should see 4 times the diagnosis and if you could 30 years 16 time the diagnoses. Going from 16 to 4 the from 4 to 1. Example a 1 person for each of 16 disorders. Only 1 of that is considered autism and rest different names. Then 1994 only 4 disorders 4 become autistic disorder. Now we quadrupled the diagnosis 1 to 4. In 2013 they do it again putting those 4 disorders under the same umbrellas. So 4 cases autism get put in with other 12 to become 16 over cases of ASD, just quadrupled it again. All this due to diagnostic criteria changes.

I am reminded of PETA's "Got Autism?" ad campaign asserting drinking milk caused autism. Ableism isnt just a right wing project. (We could talk about the intersection of white supremacy, eugenics and wellness culture/white vegan culture but that's getting off topic.) The idea that we can fix autism and other disabilities with personal choices so not to burden society with providing resources and making systemic changes is not new at all. Disabled people, especially BIPOC, poor and fat disabled folks or people with more stigmatized disabilities (think of lung cancer vs breast cancer, for ex), have been dealing with this forever

I watched this original interview and I just feel he's talking about too many things and trying to blind people with science and applying that to other things that aren't mental health related. I personally think that the DSM shouldn't contain Autism and ADHD.

I've been experiencing the severe symptoms of EDS like you mentioned in my 20s. I didn't work a physically demanding job, my family was just intensely physically abusive. As soon as I got out at 18 (i am now almost 23), my body collapsed. I also thought I has MS, doesn't help that I have a family history either. Years of PT and learning my boundries. And what I'm doing to cope with being hypermobile really helped. My PTs are also as close as you can get to being a hypermobilty specialist. (Because that doesn't exist in the U.S.) Getting a pregancy pillow and a knee pillow really helped. I'm looking into EDS rings and a shoulder pillow now too.

Doesn't help that keto is such a shitty diet, too. Like. Why should i need to cut out things i love just because you dont want to treat me with respect and accommodate my difficulties? Why should i be relegated to eating gross food for the rest of my life so that you don't have to lift a finger for me?

  • @lilpetz500

Exactly, and I dread the time I fell into that hole. The only credit I can give it is that it helped rid of the other anti-fat consumption diet myths I had fed to me through childhood. But even if it did have evidence to "heal neurodivergence/any other disabilities," it simply is not compatible with many people's needs. For many, the quality of life during and affordability of keto just is not sustainable, the range of foods is too restricted and unappetising. Restricting and forcing diets like these without the supervision and support of something like an actual medical treatment just leads to disorders. It just leads to preferring nothing over yet another nasty, meaty, buttery meal. And that's leaving out the discussion of ethics, philosophy, and personal sensory needs because I assume the people pushing for keto just aren't open to that discussion. Like, animal products are much more likely to genuinely have traumatic reasons behind an aversion that people 100% do not choose, and can accommodate. I simply have a pretty basic gore phobia, and eating meat comes with an extra layer of stress and mental labour because it simply, doesn't look good to me (keto was rough, I was in a real "just toughen up!" mindset)

  • @Catlily5

@@Magmafrost13 She said that it is an easy diet. It is not. It works for people who have epilepsy but it is hard to follow. She is saying that people will blame mentally ill people for not following an easy diet. But it is not easy. You can eat only 20 carbs a day. People who are not mentally ill have a hard time following it. Let alone mentally ill people. I am mentally ill. Medicine only works partially for me. I have been hospitalized 40 times. Only once I stopped taking my prescribed medication. So I would be willing to try an easy diet. The medical Keto diet is not easy. There is a little bit of research to support it for use in mental health but not enough long term research.

  • @lilpetz500
    @lilpetz5003 күн бұрын

Or a necessary one. Like, it's not being banned, people can choose to follow it and may see an improvement on the diet they had prior. But the push that it's healthy or even possible for everyone or even most is completely unfounded and dangerous. As are the claims that it heals disabilities, with no evidence outside of its origins as an early option to manage epilepsy. This was never about difficulty. It would also be difficult to live entirely on exclusively products from the country on the exact other side of the world, or to live entirely on apples and supplements, but if people aren't doing it, is it because it's just too difficult? Or is it that it isn't healthy/sustainable/appealing to them? Much like keto.

How some electricians tro to disprove the standard model of cosmology and the concept of gravity itself by just making superficial associations between celestial phenomenon and electrical phenomenon that acts or appears in a similar way. Well yes but how do you expect the vast majority of people to understand anything well enough to make any kind of change you want? Law makers for example will not and cannot take all the nuances of something like trans or neuro divergence into account. That is reality. What is the point of arguing about it? They won't change. They cannot change. Asking them to is unreasonable. We will never fit in and they will never understand. Trying to make them change will do nothing but create more angst and intolerance. (In my absolute opinion.)

By the way, "pre-diabetes" is a condition made up by pharmaceutical companies to make more money. Check out HAES Healthsheets on Type 2 diabetes for details but in short: 1. most people who test +ve for pre-diabetes will never go on to develop T2D 2. there's no clear evidence "treatment" of pre-diabetes impacts that 3. thresholds of blood sugar and haemoglobin A1c have both been lowered basically arbitrarily to push more people into the pre-diabetes dx bracket!

And these videos aren’t for “””NTs””” how do u know if someone is NT? You can’t, not without asking. You sound like the kind of person who declares everything you don’t like to be “”NT””. It’s giving INCEL honestly. “Born to be rejected” - Jesus Christ. That’s some real religious thinking, some real fatalist nonsense.

tired of "experts" acting like theyve found the ultimate solution to a problem, a solution that coincidentally is only *barely* related to their expertise. like, yes psychiatrists handle mental health and prescribe medications, but to get into things as complex as details of how metabolism affects mental health, that "no.1 doctor" would need a lot more specialized credentials and studies with some sort of evidence. does he even have a doctorate (edit: oh my GOD does this man truly think he's the first person to go "hmm this mitochondria thing? pretty interesting"????? has he ever spoken to a single person in the life sciences area?)

made it to the 120 mark, remembered 2 things I learned when you where reading out the 'people who should avoid' 1- certain medications don't work or work differently while on keto, like welbuitren requires carbohydrate to metabolize properly, hence it not being as prone to causing weight gain, while the raise in stress hormones caused by keto, because your body is actually in a modified starvation response can interfere with others. 2 - ketones are expressed in breast milk and can have devastating effects on small livers, up to and including full liver failure.

it's always best to be sceptical whenever someone claims to have discovered a remarkable way to treat or even "cure" any condition. As you say so many of these things ultimately end up pushing responsibility onto the person with the condition or onto their parents. Conditions are complex and if there were easy ways to deal with them they'd have been discovered long ago.

I couldn't have said it better. There are very few diseases we could even claim we have a way to negate/eradicate. And even some we have had widespread, reliable success in with vaccines, are actually being *reversed* by pseudoscientists. And even when someone is struggling with something treatable...why might they not be treating it? Perhaps it creates larger issues and incompatibilities with other conditions/their quality of life? Maybe it's literally just gated out of reach by costs and access? Disinformation about their treatment could've gotten to them, making them fear/believe in an unfounded alternative. And maybe, the condition they are ""suffering"" with...isn't actually something they want to or even need to change (eg, neurodivergence, facial differences etc. Disabled people don't owe assimilation)

As someone with ME/cfs, I get hit by this crap all the time. And that's a complex disease, not a neuro difference. But it's both making people responsible for the impossible. And when it doesn't work (duh!), it turns into victim blaming. No benefits for you, no accommodations, no care. And to make it even more fun, people with autism are at a higher risk to develop ME.
