Europe's Refugee Crisis

PATREON: / embergreen

A discussion with my "Aunt Sandra" (any similarities to persons living or deceased is entirely coincidental...) about Europe's refugee crisis, with particular focus on the English channel & the UK's new Nationality & Borders Bill.
The UK Government are laughing in the face of human rights by stripping immigrants of current rights as well as criminalizing some of the world's most vulnerable people. This is a political choice, about which UK voters should be up in arms.

Apologies for the technical...ISSUES in this one. I had a nightmare editing it & I won't be doing one of these "convos with myself" type bits again for a while, not until I've learned a thing or two. Hope you enjoyed it though! KZread has already limited the monetization, so please share this with anyone you think might be interested. And...y'know...the Patreon link is just, like, right there... HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

The line "you act like our country can do anything" is so frustrating to me, since it's something people on this side of the pond will say while also believing that we're the "best and strongest" country or whatever. Our countries act like we're The Best™ and demand a level of patriotism, but we ask for social services or something that serves the greater good and suddenly those same people will be like "we couldn't handle that!" like what? Or how the US can handle spending trillions on broken fighter jets but not healthcare or student loan relief? It's a choice! Great video and happy holidays Mica!

Thanks, Mica! 💖 I forget your cat's name, but he looks a lot like Mocha (who just doesn't have the white spots). One very minor critique that I personally (and it may just be me and my hearing) had a touch of difficulty separating your dialogue from the background music... personally, I would just drop the background music down about 2-5db. Though, again, it may just be me, I struggle a bit with audio fidelity and non-American accents also contribute to that for me (I have the same issue with John Oliver, as much as I love his work), and I obsess a lot about the audio volume on my videos .

I loved this video so much! This is such an important topic and I'm sure this will be very helpful for me - I'm from Germany and most of the points you made are just as valid here as they are in the UK, so I hope I can use them the next time I hear someone complain about refugees.

Is whether or not you own a flatscreen TV a legit criteria for who's eligible for the social safety net in the UK? I mean, it sounds like it's got to be a joke but given today's context I'm not so sure... Great video, by the way!

It's a bit of a meme at this point, but there was a time when the tabloids would point out that some people on benefits owned flat screen TVs, the implication being that they don't deserve welfare if they can afford such luxurious items. This led to a lot of old people moaning about tax payer money being spent of flat screen TVs, long after them being the only kind of TV. And thanks!

OMG. My brain is rotten. So, I was watching the intro with that song at the begining, and I was like "wow, kinda dark humour and also sorta terrifyingly real and appropriate in a way, even if brutal, to use a Lovecraftian Xmas carol song"... Took me 3 minutes to remember what I was thinking of is a parody of an ordinary Xmas carol, which is 99% likely the actual intention here. Oh well

That was an EXCELLENT breakdown of the situation and rebuttal to all the nonsense being spout (at least from a UK perspective, though I suspect most of it also applies elsewhere)! Also I hadn't seen that commercial at the end and I am kind of angry at myself just how effective that FICTIONALIZED account becomes when the people's experiences are depicted up close and... they're... well... white...? Which is a whole other discussion, of course... But damn, that video really crystallizes a lot of the issues that are just casually present in society with how non-refugees look at this whole situation. Even as a marginalized person (queer and disabled), it struck me just how alien the refugee experience is to me... Thanks for making this, and in a way also thanks for making me feel bad? I needed that wake-up call, and now also have a lot of tools provided here to help defend these people against the casual violence, ignorance and disdain they face once they've "made it" to here...

Great stuff. Subbed. I hope that when the (probably inevitable) central and south American refugee crisis begins to become a "problem" for Canada, our national consciousness doesn't make a U-turn towards xenophobia because helping people is too inconvenient. Let em all in, there's room for days.

The fact this topic on the channel only have few views compared to other topic made me sad; After all, this is a topic that involved inclusion and exclusion, and nothing feels worse than exclusion. I think that's why The little match girl story by Hans Christian Andersen is so unforgettable for me. 😂😂😂 In addition, those who supported austerity and harsh immigration probably believe in their invulnerability for whatever reasons I think. still can't forget a picture I saw on, its a jewish couple with their daughter being deported in Britain(The police hat and discribtion) the late 1930s. What us and Canada did in the 1930s could be represented by "The "Voyage of the Damned"" in MS St. Lous. And Anne Frank's failed American visa attempts. To me seems like by making associations between negative traits and the target population could always readily take people's empathy and compassion away. Is that the reason why charity aid aims at arousing compassion and empathy like to use girl women and children so much? I think if they use a beard man in the charity aid instead of that little girl the reception might be different; I think very often, beautiful women and girls are represented as the embodiment of angleness and goodness whereas man embodies threats and competition that are not good for arousing empathy and compassion. Lastly, i like the proposition that why can't human life in itself has value? unfortunately, this has been only a recent invention I think (2 to 3 hundred years); Its sad to say that human lives have been the renewable and efficient consumables resources, and I think most people in history are just trying hard to avoid this fate while trying to exploit their enemies and competitor.

The reach British racism has is insane. I had a boyfriend a few years ago, both of us being Chileans living in Chile, and I still have a clear memory of him trying to convince me that Muslims and Arabs were soon to replace native Brits. We had a fight over it and it was one of the reasons he's no longer my boyfriend now.

Yo! I'm also south American, and it's gross how much of the Brits "great replacement" conspiracy got spread here, we don't really keep up with the UK , and yet it reached us. It is wack. I have my issues with any organized religion bc of religious trauma but i never bought into the "Islam is trying to take over the UK". It really sounded like colonizer projection, "they might do to us what we did to em". Sorry i ramble i found it surprising how far from the UK that particular conspiracy theory reached

Well Muslims have replaced Christian peoples a lot in history, mainly in the middle east. So why shouldn't it happen again? (btw im Not Christian. I hope Christianity does out over time. But being replaced by an even more inhumane religion/culture is not exactly desirable either imho)

But the people that try to cross the Mediterranean sea in boats are getting themselves in dangerous situations. And then they don't wanna be rescued to the nearest coast but it has to be a European country. It has a lot of emotional blackmail to me paired with a sense of entitlement.

How many illegal migrants (aka "refugees") are staying in your house/apartment, with you paying for their food, health insurance and pocket money? Virtue signaling is always easy when you're not the one to bear the burden.
