Pretty sure they planned for Shadow to take off his inhibitor rings during Metal Virus before getting infected, but were shot down by the higher ups. Either on the Bumblecast or from other IDW staff (I also can be full of shit so remember to pinch your salt). I just remember that up until Eggperial City, Shadow in IDW was written in a way that felt restrained, regardless of who was writing for him at the time.

i basically disagree with everything you’ve said about modern shadow. i’m gonna be upfront. i do not see the issue with IDW shadow. metal virus arc? sure, i guess, they could’ve handled him better, but it’s not the character assassination people say it is. chao races and badnik bases got him great tho?? he’s a man on a mission, focusing on one thing and that thing only, which has always been part of his character. yeah he’s cold, but when hasn’t he been? i genuinely don’t understand the issues. not to mention how he was just fine against metal sonic. i don’t get it. also, about tailstube, understand that it’s the _characters_ saying that. sonic and shadow get at each others throats and annoy each other pretty often, in heroes, shadow, etc. it makes sense that _they_ think they’d be polar opposites, even if that’s not quite true-it’s because their personalities are different

I dont buy that Shadow still cares about Maria at the end of his game. It's a possibility, but it doesn't totally line up. We don't know what happened in Shadow the Hedgehog leading up to the opening and the Last Story. Everything else is just a possibility, we never get a confirmation Shadow got his memories back. He saw the video, but that doesn't mean his memory was restored, especially since it's of something he'd have no memories of in the first place. Gerald never personally told him about any of this, hence the video. I think in the end he cares about doing what he says he's going to so he fulfilled his promise but after that I think hes just moved on. We're getting the walk back now because I think they realized without a backstory its harder to give him a motivation. Giving him amnesia in the first place was for the sake of introducing him to new players and dumping his backstory to uncomplicate things.

Tbh, I feel like Prime Shadow is the best we’re going to get with this recent iteration of the character, till the movie that is. Shadow, to me, feels like a desperate way to have a rival for Sonic since Metal Sonic, the more fitting rival, is having a mid life crisis now. Forces proved you can have a good Shadow that isn’t a generic edgy jackass. Yet SEGA or whatever Mandates don’t want to push that version of Shadow, they want to push the edgy, swearing, lonely, angry, petty hedgehog.

It was the fact that he just wasn't in games. Like the reason he's broody in Generations isn't because he's edgy, but rather Sega wanted a Shadow Boss fight to celebrate the 20 anniversary and only had a single paragraph for a reason on why the two are fighting. I feel like Sega needs to give a more concrete reason to have Sonic and Shadow fight each other because I understand, Shadow is a dark clone character, and you want him to fight to og character to see who's better physically or philosophy.

I saw a whole comment chain(not this video) saying that Shadow better not be a bad guy in Sonic 3 like he wasn't the bad guy in Sa2. I believe many kids didn't play Sa2, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow05 because there old and unaccessible games in the modern day so the only source of these games are video essays.

While I get your argument that Shadow in "SA2 through to Sonic 06" is consistent and does provide an arc, he's still pretty inconsistencies within there. My issues are with Heroes and Shadow 05 specifically. In SA2 I think of him more as a servant. He pretends to serve Eggman, while thinking he's serving Maria, but for most of the game he's actually serving Gerald. And at the end of the game he still is a servant, but now to Maria's true wish. English SA2 Shadow has some edgy quotes that weren't in the Japanese version, but not as much as later games. Heroes has a few Shadow lines that don't feel in character, such as the "it will be a date to DIE for" one. Otherwise, heroes Shadow is fine. But Shadow 05 just doesn't get Shadow. Sure, it goes on with the servant/my-choice arc, but Shadow does not behave like he should. The game is just being edgy for edgy-sake.
