    Looks good 👍 just wondering if a wooden dowel would hold up instead of brass that way it wouldn't scrape the barrel in a hurry? Just thoughts.

    Brass is a lot softer than steel. Same reason cleaning jags are made of brass.

    Couldn’t say one way or the other. My goal was to get as close to true bore butter as possible, thus the olive oil. You can always experiment!

    A high quality factory rifle. If you keep an eye out on E bay a 45 barrel will show up from time to time. Easy to switch barrels and have a deer rifle too.

    If it’s a smooth bore than it’s not a rifle at all it’s a musket.

  • @Majormusket
    @Majormusket21 күн бұрын

    “Smoothrifle” was a term coined in the 18th century regarding a long arm that had all the appointments of a rifle of the time, but with a smooth bore. This was done at the request of a new build, or later bored smooth when rifling had worn out.

    Thanks for such tips. Iam from middle Europe (Czech republic) and Iam just starting with muzzleloading. I already have "normal" firearms for 6 years, but when I started watching videos about blackpowder stuff, I absolutly want to try shooting it by my self. Its kinda dificult to get cheap muzzleloader here 😕 I wanted one with 1:48" barrel twist, but no single gunshop have them in stock... 🙄 or they were very expensive. So I ordered Hawken rifle in .45cal with 1:66" twist rate with set trigger. So, Iam just looking what I will need next 😁

    Good video on these interesting rifles. If you're interested in getting one,be aware that they are addictive. I'm a Winchester guy, but I have 3 gill guns. Ive got a Stevens 87a, a Wester Field (Montgomery Ward) version, and a Savage 6a, the original of this rifle. The Savage has a walnut stock, the other 2 birch. Dating them requires some research, as they were made before 1968 and they don't typically have serial numbers, unless, i think, they were exported.

    I was having a hard time seeing my sights. Everything black so I took some white spray paint put a shot on a piece of scrap paper then rolled a Q tip in the paint, then put a bit on the top back part of front blade. I also tried a bit on each side of rear sights. It helps a lot especially in low light.

    I have a Springfield 87 A….. many were made for stores too….different names, Savage, etc….great .22. I read somewhere that two million were made. I also have had the Ruger 1022 for years, also like it a lot, but prefer the long barrel of the 87 A……Hey, take that great felt looking hat off, you will be cooler. Thanks. 👍 If you didn’t know, that 87 A can be set to shoot single shot only. Push the bolt in till you hear and feel the click. 😉

    "They say it's a rosewood..it isn't -.its actually plywood!" Really? it comes from a plywood tree? Sarcasm aside, most rosewood grips for handguns are laminated. It keeps them from cracking and makes them more durable.

  • @Majormusket
    @Majormusket2 ай бұрын

    It’s a rosewood color on a soft wood ply lol. I’ve used all kinds of rosewood throughout my whole life from Brazilian to Honduran and everything in between. A laminate makes sense like you said to keep them from cracking, but that ain’t rosewood in those grips haha

    Looks great! Perhaps I could add a bit of advice though. Even if extra virgin olive oil is used, it’s still not free of acid, so it might be more economical to use a cheap olive oil and neutralize its acidity. That was actually done by clock and watchmakers in the centuries past to create needed lubricants on their own. I’ve read a book from 19th century called “Friction, Lubrication and the Lubricants in Horology” giving instructions how to refine oils from hooves, bones and whale blubber to olive oil. The method to neutralize acids from olive oil as described there is to mix the oil with caustic soda lye (one hundredth part of the weight) and shake it well. After several days (shaking it again periodically), a large quantity of water is to be added and oil poured off from the top. For horological purposes it is also to be purified from other substances using alcohol, but I suppose that’s unnecessary here. The oil should be acid free after the above mentioned neutralization, which should be beneficial for firearms use.

  • @Majormusket
    @Majormusket2 ай бұрын

    Very fascinating information. Thank you for sharing. In my opinion, with the application of BP firearms, the mild acidity of olive oil is moot compared the the corrosiveness of the black powder we willingly pour down the barrel itself with every use. The most important thing is to know how to clean your weapon and store it properly by keeping all ferrous metal bits coated in a thin, non-buildup type oil between use.

    I got pretty lucky with my rough rider. Id potentially trim down the front sigt to make it a bit easier to line the hight up, but other than that, the windage is perfect. These cheap revolvers are so much fun to go out and shoot.

    Que rifle es ?

  • @michaelsnyder3871
    @michaelsnyder38713 ай бұрын

    I'm sorry, sir, but what you have is a fowling piece or a .45 musket. A rifle is a rifle because it has RIFLING. That's why it is called a rifle. A smooth-bore shoulder arm is NOT a rifle. By any definition, whether that of the late 18th century or today.

  • @Majormusket
    @Majormusket3 ай бұрын

    The term “smoothrifle” was used extensively in the 18th century. Some smoothrifles were requested and built as such, where others started out as rifles that were re-bored to a smooth barrel due to worn rifling. The concept is to bear all the appointments of a long rifle outwardly with a smooth bore. It’s historically accurate and real terminology.
