I used to adjust these. The lift mechanism needs adjusting. It is held down with two staked screws. Quite often, people would disassemble them for a thorough cleaning and not realize that the lift housing must be set for a particular width and depth. These rifles should have zero feeding issues regardless of bullet shape.

@@chadghicks Sorry for the delay, I was out of town. The first thing to do is pull the lift spring and “retighten” the spring’s coils. They can relax a bit over time.

These work flawlessly with good ammo. 22LR bulk now a day's is mostly crap. You can hear the inconsistency while shooting pat pat thud, jam. The problem lies in when the jam occurred you whipped out your screw driver and get to digging out the jam, over the years this gouged and bent and disformed springs. My dad was the worst and colorful perlative's followed every un jamming session. I was 12 and asked if I could fix it, he said if I could fix it I could have it. After a new holding spring at base tube feed and straighten the lift arm, I got my first 22. Still have it. I'm 62

I have an 87A. My father gave it to me back in the early 1970's. Very accurate. Was the best gun until the ejection arms wore out sometime around 2007ish 2008. Replaced it with a Ruger 10/22, another accurate gun. Never replaced the ejection arms and there it sits.

I would fix it and honor the memories of my father. Guns are a great legacy. I wished my forefather left me one.

First, thoughly clean the gun and lubricate. Be sure all things are tight that need to be. Next try other ammo. Start with low velocity rounds first. Mine will bulge the back of the case with high velocity rounds. There is a cartridge lifter that has a bump on it that can wear down causing feed failures. The last thing to remember is that there is a delicate balance between the recoil spring and the firing pin spring. They are very similar on their compression rates. That's why semi autos can be ammo sensitive.

That's very strange but it's that very same Winchester PowerPoint x is what I seem to have the most trouble with shooting through my Stevenson 87A

Shorts cause havoc if not run bolt action only I’ve noticed as well, even the 1200+fps ones I really tried to get to run semi auto. Had to take it apart 3 separate times. 3rd times the charm. I know it well now,😂! Yup, you are 100% correct here. They are great like most .22,s. Just gotta learn what they like and of course run them relatively clean to start with. My Remington 550-1 is dirty and it still runs great, even 710fps CB shorts. Great Video, sweet lil rifle! I have an early 1950,s Wards Westerfield 87 version. It’s like new! It likes Remington Golden Bullets, Norma Tac-22, Federal Auto Match & so on. Super reliable & very accurate! Great click clack gill gun. So fun to plink with!

The clip on the tube causes jams if bent orthe lifter spring is tired .....but some ammo sucks .......thunderbolts always ran great,,,,

Using semi auto rounds are the answer . They are slightly shorter so less likely to jam up . Also weigh your rounds and you’ll find about 80% weigh the same and 20% weigh slightly more or slightly less . I batch mine and clean of the grease before I use them and never have any issues . The batched rounds stop the flyers you usually get . Got to love the .22lr . A great little game round .

I think a lot of more modern semi-automatic .22s are made to use subsonic ammo I know my Magtech is, I prefer high velocity ammo though and usually buy CCI mini mags. I like the look of your Stevens and thanks for the video.

Good stuff ya I have two one cycles everything no issues the other same stovepipes I cleaned it and polished bolt and removed any rough edges in bolt channels and bolt body now it also cycles any ammo

Great video and question what ammo did you use at the end?

My father bought me a gill gun during ww2. Shot probably over a thousand rds thru it and never had a jam.

I have a Savage 187r and have never had any problem with it not feeding till recently...Must be the crappy ammo now...smh

I have a Savage model 6. They are the same firearm. My grandad bought it in 1936 brand new. I have had the same issues.

I have one and would like to know how do you know date of manufacture . All mine has is serial numbers . I heard some were made in the early 19 century .

I’ve gotta find one of those old 87a rifles they just look so cool.

When you lock the bolt with CB Rounds, it is not much louder than a hand clap!

Sigh, I use and love CCI Mini Mag in my 1022, My 87B, stove pipes every second round with them. I have welded and ground the feeder on the 87B There was a wee bit of damage to the feeder around the lifter and still no luck. you telling me to use cheaper rounds? FML. I thought it was spring tension failure! A quick trip to the range will confirm! ty!

From watching your action cycle it looks like your target rounds are simply under powered. Bolt cycles obviously slower. I have semi-auto shotgun that says in the manual "do not use less than 1200fps. Ammo or jamming may occur." I have shot 1150fps. skeet loads and it cycled fine, got lucky and got a good one I suppose. From watching it just seems your return spring is stiffer than the recoil from the target loads. I would just keep it clean and feed it what it likes. God bless.

I had the same problem I found there is a wire clip that catches the round before going into to the barrel mine was missing and I have heard this isn’t uncommon it comes off very easy

I've seen other vids where guys use lead .22s less expensive. When they switch to copper jacket rds gun works fine.

When this gun was made there was no high velocity ammo.

Still doesn’t hurt that it’s around now and will help with inconsistencies.

The gun is out of time. The bolt spring needs adjusting. Easy fix.

A lot of semi autos Need hot ammo. Low velocity ammo won’t work in a lot of semi autos. Hass to be high velocity.
