OMG, I so much wish those days were back!!!!! It was when most all department stores had a great sporting goods area, and like Sears, they would partner with some of the best manufacturing companies, and have their special name put on the product. Today, my area sporting goods big box stores are sparce, I must go online to order certain things. That's a very nice rifle you feature, and back then they were well made........Thanks for sharing. You are 100% right. It sure seems like those big stores have a tendency to get away from the hunting/firearm scene. Sadly they are catering to certain groups of people, and choosing to ignore us outdoor folks. Anyway I appreciate your comments, and I'll be continuing in my endeavor God willing.

If I could go back in time, I would go back in time when you could go into Sears and buy such great guns! AND.....I would stay there!

I had one as a kid, wish I still had it. Really good rifle.

Great info especially on takedown & cleaning on a special little rifle. I like that different click clack action especially for shooting shorts. Be great for squirrels in about 7 weeks. Happy 4th & take care. 🇺🇸🎇🙏👍

Another great video, Tom. I love the reviews you do on these old guns. My brother has an 87 that was his first gun. My Dad bought it from a coworker in the late ‘50s for I believe $25, what a value. It began to malfunction several years back, so in order to find out what was wrong I bought one, disassembled both and made a comparison. As I remember, a piece in the carrier was slightly bent. After straightening that component, it functions flawlessly to this day. I don’t necessarily recommend buying a gun to fix another, but it worked that time, and I ended up with a nice 87A. That one eventually was given to a friend, but I subsequently bought another one which I still have. Ironically, I didn’t learn of the click/clack feature until just a few years ago while watching a review. Great little gun that just reinforces the opinion that they just don’t make ‘em like they used to.

I inherited my dad's guns when he passed in 2017 at 83 years old. In that collection is a Savage 87a(in rough condition), a Mossberg Model 146 B that I "think" was made around 1941(that I have totally restored) and a Winchester Model 02-22 that is nickel plated (that has to be the most inexpensive, simplest .22 bolt action ever made and is super compact and reliable. I could not find any information regarding the Winchester being nickel plated from the factory. My dad and several friends and relatives all worked at Sperry Rand back in the early 70's and they made vacuum tubes. Apparently, they had the ability to nickel plate items because all of those guys have nickel plated guns, knives, tools etc.. lol Thank you for this informative video. I have never heard of the click-clack 22 until I recognized the model in the thumbnail for this video. Having watched several of you videos in the past I had to watch this one too. Learned a lot about this rifle. It will be my next restoration project. Any info you can provide on the Winchester would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for this video. My great grandpa passed this gun down to my dad, and while I was shooting it one day, over 10 years ago, the charging handle broke. It never got fixed, and I finally decided to fix it up for him and give it back to him for Christmas. Now I just have to find a replacement charging handle 🙂 happy holidays!

I inherited a broken Savage Stevens 87A from my great uncle. With the help of a gunsmith I was able to replace missing parts and do some repairs and rust removal to get it back into working order.

Thanks for another great video in your series! I look forward to each video you post. I'm a fan of the savage 22 rifles. New and old. I have been looking for a "gill gun" for a long time, but have yet to find one to add to my collection. I did purchase a savage model 64 with a wood stock, which has similar features and is quite accurate.

There are so many vintage .22's out there. Keep looking, you will run across a good one eventually. I appreciate your enthusiasm, and of course your comments.

These are great vintage .22 rifles. I have a Savage Model 6D Deluxe. Looks like the day I got for $25 in 1959. It will be going to my grandson when he completes his hunter safety course. Best I can determine, it was manufactured in 1947. It nails rabbits, rock chucks and gofers on the farm with the Nikon rimfire scope.

I've got a Steven's 87D that was given to me by my Wife's Uncle, it was her Grandfather's gun. It was missing a few internal parts and springs replaced but parts were available. Getting the action and especially the loading elevator happy wasn't fun but I've got 100% reliable. I've been shooting guns all my life and like a fun project, they say most Gunsmiths won't even work on the model 87.

You can also pull the bolt back until it contacts the hammer and pull the trigger and ride the bolt forward. I have a Savage (Utica) 6A with all the bells and whistles. The folding open rear sight, the replaceable element front sight, the 105 aperture rear sight and a Weaver 29S 3x scope in the T1 mount. For my money, no better semiautomatic. 22 rifle was ever made. Well made, accurate, reliable and durable Savage, in the literature that came with the rifle, recommended taking the action to pieces every THOUSAND shots! Try that with a 10/22 or Marlin Model 60!

Very Nice, just brought home my Like new used Wards Westerfield 87. After cleaning it it runs perfectly. It also had its original lubricant stuck on, kinda like Cosmo lean. Such a joy to shoot. Great Video!

I also use #9 and a reusable sponge type swab & an old tooth brush, sometimes a plastic tooth pick as well to remove stuck on deposits. I noticed the bolt is designed close to the bolt of my Ruger mark lV Hunter

Including the ones you mentioned, mine also runs the Golden Bullets, Federal AutoMatch well also. Definitely a great shooter, highly accurate. The scope on it is perfectly set for Remington golden bullets. Been getting dime sized groups regularly at 50yards! Definitely impressed!! I paid $200 for it.

I watched this again and love it every time! I live in commie NJ and it's hard to have fun like this now.

Another great .22 video! I never had one of these rifles, but I love your focus on the old vintage.22’s. You are obviously a great shooter and getting great accuracy out of the vintage rifles! I would love for you to do a video on your shooting techniques. I am always looking for tips to improve my own shooting.

I have 2 Western Field guill guns ( 87's) and a Savage (J C Higgins model 25) made by High Standard. Fun to shoot.

I got one of the Savage/Stevens models from my uncle (God rest his soul) 42 years ago and it's still shooting fine. The bore was/is a little rough but I cleaned it out with some Kroll and bore paste with some success and she's shooting minute of can now.

My neighbor gave me one he found between a mattress at his cottage 40 something years ago still have it and love it.

I really enjoyed this video. Years ago I picked up a Hiawatha model 189, which is a 6DL clone. It only had half a box of shorts fired thru it! I purchased it from the wife of the deceased husband. I originally went to the estate sale with my family to pick up some bargains, which we did, and I saw 2 1/2 boxes of Remington shorts for50 cents each, so I bought them. The wife asked me if I would be interested in a rifle to go with the ammo..sure I said. She brought out this absolutley goregeous rifle, in 100% condition. She said her husband used it to shoot squirrels off the bird feeder and had bought those 3 boxes when he bought the rifle. I asked what she wanted for it and she said $75, so I paid her, not realizing what the rifle was really worth. Wish I still had it, had to sell it for paying bills.

Now I want one 😅

I have a Stevens 87A. Mine has the tenite stock which was Duponts try at a polymer/plastic stock. Made right after WW2. Such a great shooter, havent seen any so far with a stock like mine

Congratulations Tom for the great video on the Savage 6 Stevens 87- Down here in Argentina they made a clone of the Stevens 87 and I had the opportunity to test a specimen with a very basic scope of 6 x and standard ctgs at 50 meters distance ,5 shots in a ragged hole !!!,the model and brand was Saurio modelo 600 and barrel lenght 24 " with micro groove rifling of German manufacture- Wonder if any of the current semi autos don t even come close to this performance- Sadly the factory has been closed down for quite some years. Maybe you can locate some specimen that made it up there and do a test side by side with all the different iterations.All the best to you-

A tip, I bought one like mint. But upon cleaning I found the tube spring was rusted badly. I did find a new one.

These are wonderful rifles I grew up with as a young boy squirrel hunting if you just love to tinker this is the rifle is such a mechanical. Fun to play with. My only suggestion is that the chisel edged plungers which is high wear on the metal should be greased

I have a savage model 7a and its a blast to shoot but hard to find replacement parts and seems to have lil info about it but when properly oiled and cleaned can shoot 22 shorts in semi auto

...I inherited my dad's JC Higgins...he mom send it to him when he was stationed in Texas ca. 1943 or so while attending USAF schooling....dsad used'tsa have a scope mount like that - it's gone now...where did you (or can you) find one???

I never really liked this model until now. I have never fired one and have not seen the features shown as you did here. Looks like a good gun to me now especially that single shot feature.

I have the 87a. Needing to put optic on it. Do you know which weaver side mount fits these rifles

My daddy gave me one of these rifles with a nylon stock back when I was 17. I'm 46 now. The last time I dug it out for a range trip it suffered and failure and now the breech won't open more than 50 percent or so. Super fun gun to shoot. I gotta take it apart and figure out what's wrong.

I have watched quite a few of your videos. I really enjoy the way you present them. I have one of these JCHiggins 101 16s that was given to me by my dad just a couple of weeks before he passed away the end of last year. It is missing an ejector on the right side of bolt. Do you have any knowledge of where I may be able to find one to fix this great rifle?

If you have time I’d like to see if there is a change in impact when in bolt lock vs semi auto.

I have a one and rarely ever shot it and now thanks to you I'm going to start. Like yours the scope is a challenge with bifocals and I'm going to have to upgrade, is the original mounts for 1 inch diameter scope?

Thank you for sharing. My Savage Mod 6a, on semi auto, ejects the spent case and feeds fresh cartridge in properly but does not cock the hammer. If I load manually it works fine. I am using CCI Stingers (high velocity). Bolt system is clean and smooth. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a sear or sear/engagement issue.

My great uncle had one. It would shoot shorts, longs, and long rifles without any difficulty. I liked the way it held open until you released the trigger. Not sure what happened to it. It was very accurate.

Hi: I have a Stevens 87A that I just acquired in excellent shape. However it does not have any holes drilled in the receiver for a scope. Did yours come with the scope and mount ? And, if I decide to have a gunsmith drill and tap the receiver for a scope, which one do I use (meaning scope mount) ? Thanks

Thanks for your video. Unusual rifle semi-auto and also single shot with a locked breech. Have you chronographed shooting with a locked breech and than semiauto to see if there is any difference in velocity?

I have a Savage probably just as old as that if not older it's a model 22 semi-automatic and that's all it says to click clack with the vent

I have a stevens 87b It doesn't seem to be drilled and tapped for a scope mount. I was wondering how much trouble that would be to do that

I have one and learned a lot from this video. Do you know where I can get a scope mount? Mine is a JC Higgens.

I have a Savage model 22 semi- it's I'm wondering what year it was made it holds 17 long rifles I'm wondering what year it was made it's obviously earlier than the model that you're showing here the original scope

Had a High Standard sport king very similar gills and all. Any knowledge on that one ?

Isn't this the model 87A that will unintentionally fire full auto ? If so, how can that be repaired to prevent it?

That's a great question. You are correct, these models are notorious for this problem. I have found in the ones I worked on, either the bolt or the sear will have some wear at the contact, and/or they are so dirty with old grease, grime and powder fouling that they will malfunction and fire in full auto. Sometimes a good cleaning will solve the problem.

Where could you find a scope mount for that rifle?

Did those stocks come checkered from the factory???

As far as I know, yes they do. The stock on my JC Higgins is made of tenite.

That winchester ammo is expensive here at our Walmart its 42.97 a bulk box

I understand. Walmart is higher in price than many gun stores in my area. For example, CCI standard is $3.95 at my favorite gun store, and $4.95at my local Walmart. Cost savings? I don't think so.☹

In my opinion, it was an idea that made it possible to shoot .22 short, long, and long rifle loads in the same rifle interchangeably. Also, you can visually inspect the breech just by holding the trigger back, thereby knowing if the gun is empty or not. But that's just my opinion.

I own a one and where would I find the production date for my rifle, thanks in advance.

If its a Savage, its accurate...every Savage I've shot is a shooter.

Lot of jc higgens bargains at gun auctions. When I was a boy just about every appliance and guns came from sears and robuck . Sears and Robuck dropped the jc higgens line about 1962

Seems to me like a complicated little gun that could get somebody hurt

It's not really all that complicated. Perhaps I went into detail a bit too much. Once you shoot the gun and handle it a bit, it becomes quite easy, and lots of fun. If you ever get the chance to shoot one you will see what I mean.

it is to bad they nick named it a click clack gun makes it sound cheap . i have two of these in stevens 87a by far it is a great gun i found it shoots better then some expensive guns today like a tika and many rugers

So many old .22's will out shoot modern day new guns. I'm sure your rifles are real tack drivers because most all of these shoot well.
